Q is for Quagmire
by Christine Adams ©2000

Artist's Statement: My 70's ABC challenge quilt is Quagmire. Techniques used included piecing, applique´, free motion quilting, hand dyed fabric. Many of the leaves stand out and hang loosely from the umbrella of trees. In the center the White House implodes upon itself. The Quagmire portrayed on the lower part of the quilt is made up of several charcoal gray and black fabrics with a brown net draped to catch whatever can be caught which is pretty impossible because of the hole in the net mid bottom. The white strips speak of the quagmire of politics and events the White House found itself in - Watergate, Jones Town, Wilbur Mills and Fanne Foxe, Nixon's Resignation, the Iranian Hostages, and more. We were still an idealistic nation in those days, ready to march and fight for a cause. We demanded much of our leaders. It is interesting that the political candidates for president today are from this idealistic group. Is this our generation's opportunity to show that there IS a better way to lead and to live? Will the final candidate get caught in a new Quagmire? These are questions only time will answer. Christine Adams

S
is for Souvenirs of 1977
by Barb Pozek

This quilt challenge was an exciting project for me. I had so many S items to choose from, it was harder for me to limit myself than anything else. I began with the music of the 70's.

I used to listen to the radio and I would hear music I would like, but when I went on a shopping trip to the city, and walked into a music store, all names of albums, groups or songs would just leave my mind. This went on for months until finally, one day, I was determined to purchase some music no matter what! As I walked into the store, my mind went blank once more. I wandered the aisles, hoping to purchase my music based solely on the album cover art. I chose the album I depicted in my quilt...Sytx's Grand Illusion. I loved it, and afterwards, built quite a collection of their work.

The next element in my quilt is the snapshots. These are scattered around, like the scattered memories I have from that time. I had a friend, Woody, who loved all sorts of cars and such. He had one for just about every occasion, but my favorite was his van with the airbrushed mural on the side. A whole group of us would often travel to places in that van, somethimes to Bluegrass festivals.

We also spent a lot of time at the Suwannee River, swimming, sunning, and just hanging out.

I was always interested in art, but I believe, 1977 was the first year I discovered Prismacolor colored pencils. The art teacher at Suwannee High School, Ms. Smart, remains one of my artistic heroes. I included a replica of a drawing I did from that year, a blues harmonica player I saw at the Florida Folk Festival, held each year at White Springs, Florida.

I used several techniques in the construction of this quilt, some I learned about from the QuiltArt list, such as the use of spray adhesives. Materials used are commercial and hand dyed fabric, acrylic paints, Prismacolor pencils, and permanent inks..........thank you, Barb Pozek.

S
is for Saturday Night Fever

by Chris Hansen ©1999

I chose SATURDAY NIGHT FEVER because I always had it. I was so drawn to the night life that it was a negative influence in my life, though I didn't see it that way at the time. Later I came to envy and admire the more serious types who didn't fall to the same kinds of influences that captured me, (though not enought to mary one).

Once the subject was chosen, the piece started to come together, one color or one shape leading to another. I wanted to tell of the attractiveness and the deceptiveness of my once, much loved night life.....Chris Hansen
