1905 to 1961

Second UN Secretary General (1953 to 1961)
In many ways ahead of his time, Dag Hammarskjöld was one of the most dedicated Secretary Generals the United Nations ever had. He was in office from April 10, 1953 until September 18, 1961 and his is quite a story. His career ended tragically when his plane crashed while on a peace mission to the Congo.

Few people know about him. Even some of the Swedes I know personally could tell me nothing. I heard about him almost by accident a few years ago, when a friend of mine qouted something to me from his book. (see "Quotations") I was impressed by his deep thoughts and the seriousness with which he took his duties to humanity. Unusual for many that are in power today.

I'm including some quotes from his book "Markings" which is a sort of diary that he was preparing to eventually publish. These say more than anything I could write here. (see "Quotations")

So far, except for his book, I've gotten mainly just facts and figures on his career life, but that has been quite revealing. Please check out his biography here. It's a bit dry as I got most of the facts from the UN, but it is astounding! If I was a Swede I'd be busting with pride. He was a very busy and amazing man.

Because of the constant giving of his time and strength, he lived quite a lonely life. With amazing humility, and strong Christian convictions and belief in God, he made tremendous sacrifices. As so often happens with men of such force and talent, he felt very keenly his weaknesses and lacks and was often plagued with guilt that he didn't do more. A rare man indeed.
