ROME (Oct 21, 1995 - 07:48 EDT) - European player of the year Hristo Stoichkov lashed out at his Italian club Parma on Saturday, saying they lacked character in losing 3-0 to Sweden's Halmstad in a Cup Winners' Cup tie on Thursday. "We have returned to the same old problems: against small sides Parma play at 50 percent," the Bulgarian striker told Il Giornale newspaper. "When these small clubs play against Parma, they give it all they have got. And that's what happened. We were not able to bounce back even though we had the time," he added. "It is a question of mentality. Of character."

PARMA, Italy (Mar 7, 1996 - 18:33 EST) - A 58th minute goal by Bulgaria's Hristo Stoichkov lifted Parma to a 1-0 victory over Paris St. Germain of France in their European Cup Winners' Cup quarter-final first leg match on Thursday. Stoichkov, a former European player of the year, latched on to a Dino Baggio through ball on the left side of the penalty area and angled it inside the far post past 'keeper Bernard Lama. Parma had pinned much of their serie A title hopes this season on Stoichkov but he has not lived up to the high expectations after his arrival from Barcelona last summer. His goal on Thursday may have gone some way to rewarding the faith placed in him, although the second leg in Paris looks a stiff task. Parma, who dominated most of the first half and nearly went ahead through Stoichkov in the 10th minute, were fortunate not concede a goal in the second half as the French side took command in the final 25 minutes. Inzaghi had in the 26th minute replaced Italy midfielder Gianfranco Zola, who had been out of action for three weeks because of a leg injury but was surprisingly put in the starting line-up beside Stoichkov in attack.
