It was 20-year-old Manuel "Junior" Agogo instead of two-time FIFA world player of the year Hristo Stoichkov of Bulgaria. Agogo, a British citizen who was born in Ghana and performed well at spring training after developing in the youth program of English club Sheffield Wednesday, was cheap.
To get Stoichkov, MLS--which signs players for all teams--would have to pay a hefty acquisition fee, and deputy commissioner Ivan Gazidis claims the Fire isn't entitled to an allocation player under the new rules. To get one, the Fire must trade with a team willing to give up an allocation spot.

Stoichkov Signed with Chicago Fire

The megastar Hristo Stoichkov signed yesterday a two-year contract with Chicago Fire. The news has been announced by 'Channel 3'.Two representers of the team from Chicago arrived yesterday in Barcelona and began straight negotiations with his manager Mingea.Later on during the day Stoichkov said, that he will return to his sport fitness and will rejoin the national team.Hristo also said, that in this situation he will probably leave the post director of all the national teams due to an impossibility to follow their work.
It was also made clear that the team from Chicago will pay 200 000 UDS to the Japanese Kashiwa Reysol, where Stoichkov played last.
By the way it was made clear that Hristo Stoichkov and Thomas N'Cono, who are managers of 'Constelasi Esportiva'-a company, which owns the 3rd division Spanish team Hirona, have fired the coach of the team Pedro Bengoechea.Itzo and the ex-goal keeper have put at his place the Catalunian Manolo Markes. The goal, which they have given to the coach is to take the team to second division next year.

An old friend of Hristo Stoichkov-the referee Juan Ansuategui Roca will rule the match Real Madrid-Barca.This is the referee, who showed a red card to Stoichkov even before his coming in Barcelona. In 1989 in a friendly tournament with the participation of Barcelona and CSKA Sofia in Palma de Majorka the referee showed a red card to Stoichkov. At that time the Dagger was playing for the club of the Army, but he showed the referee and the whole referee comission of Spain, that they will have to enter a cage for wild dogs, when they have something to do with the Bulgarian.
It is an irony of the destiny, that Hristo played his last big derby versus Real Madrid on the 1st of November 1997,when the referee is Ansuategui Roca. The match was in Madrid,Barca won with goals of Rivaldo,Louis Enrique and Giovanni, and Stoichkov was quite surprisingly included in the squad for the match from Van Gaal after he had seen the previous Barca matches from the tribunes. The Bulgarian played about 60 minutes, after which he was changed by Giovanni, who later scored the last goal. When leaving Stoichkov shakes the hand of Roca, feeling that this is his last participance in the big derby versus Real.
