Without Aspien, many of the tales of the Heroes' exploits would seem painfully empty. A rogue, a thief, an assassin, and a letch, Aspien has become an accepted member of the Heroes despite his many flaws (or perhaps because of them!). His quickness with a thrown dagger, as well as his quickness to a smart-aleck quip, have made him an alternately feared and hated personality around Tharbad.
Though Aspien's half-elven heritage has caused him problems before, his overwhelming hatred for the elves, as well as the dwarves, more than justifies this predjudice. And, while he may sometimes seem to be a dirty, gambling, worthless individual, his often disastrous attempts at romance (or something similar) are often as hilarious to the Heroes as to the audiences of the Heroes' tales. And one thing which only Aspien may claim: none of the other Heroes have faced down a Balrog (even if he didn't stay to fight it).
Alas, Aspien was slain (along with Calafin) fighting the Reaper, the demon which protected Gorgoroth in the depths of the Pales.
