PLACE IN THE QUEST:
It should be noted that Matheus was not an actual character in the quest, for he died seven years prior to its beginning. His impact on, and significance in the quest, were such that he is mentioned here. He was the first seer of prophecy who mysteriously came into possession of the Gift of the Valar and was murdered by shadowy assassins on his way to Tharbad (presumably to see Allanon). It was he who sparked the new war in the Fourth Age, and he could quite possibly be stated to be its first casualty.
