Before You Get a Cat

If you are considering owning a cat as a pet, you probably already know that they are very easy to take care of. They don't need to be exercised, they are very clean, and they're often quiet, too. Still, while a cat may seem like an ideal pet, you may not necessarily be an ideal cat owner. You'll need to have plenty of time to devote to your cat, particularly when it is a kitten, and you need to be able to feed your cat at least twice a day. If you live near a busy road, you may want to have a cat that could adapt to a life indoors.

Also, you'll need to make sure the cat you get is suited to life with the kinds of people and animals around it. For instance, if you get an adult cat that is comfortable living with no children and no other pets, its behavior can drastically change if you put it with kids and other pets. Cats don't always get along with each other. On the other hand, if you get an adult cat that would rather be around kids, other cats, and even dogs, it may not be happy being without all the company. This problem can be easily solved, though; you can either get a cat which is suited to the kind of people and animals at your house or get a kitten which can be adapted to any combination of people and animals.

One final thing you'll need to consider is veterinary care. Your cat will need shots on a regular basis as well as yearly checkups. It is also recommended that you get your cat spayed or neutered. If your cat gets sick, it will need immediate medical care.

So when deciding which cat you are suited to owning, keep all this in mind and both you and your cat will live very happy and healthy lives together.
