Misty, my first aussie. Aussies have owned me since 1978. I grew up showing horses and they were apart of that life. My father ran a cow-calf; stocker calves operation, usually 30 mommas and 50 to 60 stockers. That was his hobby. His main profession is veterinarian, which I followed in his footsteps by studying Animal Health Technology at Sul Ross State and then on to work at Texas A & M in the small animal surgery. My Aussies went with me. Misty was my first aussie and the beginning of a lifetime commitment to this working breed. In 1978, my father bought this blue merle female at a horse show for $50.00. Seems I could not keep my mind on showing the horses at all until she was mine. Misty had all the characteristics that we still find in today's working aussie. They are willing to do whatever the situation calls for, wether you are hard at work or hard at play. I can't imagine not having dog hair to vacuum up or muddy paws to clean. This is the only breed for me. They can keep up with MY high energy activities. In 1986, I met my Husband Steve who just happens to come with an Aussie! Burns' Silver Red Spur CD. I started showing in obedience at that time. Leaving the horses behind and letting the bank account recover. As you all know, when you show dogs...the money gets spent in other ways. I have always had a love for the working dog. I used Misty (my first blue merle Aussie) to work my fathers and my cattle, not knowing anything about training a stockdog. My dogs have taught me a lot since then. I currently manage a cutting horse and cow-calf operation. I enjoy the family I work for, and on occasion get to use my dogs. My first love will always be the instinct of the working Aussie. They have gotten me out of many a jam, be it cattle or sheep. Don't know to many attack ducks. HEHEHE my goals have not changed. I will continue to pursue great instinct, sound physically and mentally individuals that will preserve the working Australian Shepherd.
I do not breed often. I have had 7 litters in 21 years. Quality NOT quantity.... Besides Steve and I keep most of them. On Sunday mornings you will find us either at a dog trial or giving lessons to those that decided to "tackle" the training of some very willing stockdogs. Lessons and individual training are both available. A good stockdog takes the place of a hired hand...and rarely calls in sick. |
