The Night Of The Wolf by Alice Borchardt Del Rey / Ballentine August, 1999 $25.00 (hardcopy) ISBN: 0345423623 4 Hearts (Horror/Werewolf)

Many words can be used to describe the latest werewolf novel scribed by Anne Rice’s older sister, Alice Borchardt, but in the end only one word comes to mind when readers think of this romantic gothic thriller, is.......bestseller! Maniel, the sexy shapeshifter that readers were introduced to in the first book in this series, The Silver Wolf (July, 1998 release) is back. However, this is not quite the same Maniel that readers will remember from her previous release. Gone is the self confident, all-knowing Maniel, now replaced by the immortal Maniel from eight hundred years ago. Back in a time when Rome and Julius Caesar and his armies were taking over the world. Living with his wolf pack in the highlands, Maniel oftentimes finds himself inexplicably drawn to one of the women--Imona, bathing nude in a nearby pond. Not only does the wolf/Maniel find the red-haired woman extremely beautiful, but he is attracted to her in ways he cannot explain; her looks, her scent....everything about her--all forbidden desires. His uncontrollable desires and passion is the driving force behind his transformation to a man. Drawn to Imona, Maniel follows her to Rome. While in Rome, Maniel is captured and trained as a gladiator --the perfect job for a powerful man who also serves as a powerful leader among the pack of wolves he calls family.

Alice Borchardt has scribed a well-written shapeshifter tale which leads readers along the timely path of Maniel and the events that helped both changed a world and people’s lives. Ms. Borchardt will win a few more readers over with this, the sequel to the first highly publicized, yet somewhat “lacking” tale of werewolves. In Night Of The Wolf, the author concentrates her energy on the development of the lead protagonists rather than the over-abundant amount of history found in this books predecessor. This story is a terrific read for lovers of werewolf tales.

The More I See You by, Lynn Kurland Jove Books (Haunting Hearts) October, 1999 ISBN: 0425171078 3 1/2 Hearts (Time-Travel Rom.)

Realizing she’s hit rock bottom, composer, Jessica Blakely resorts to an all-expense paid blind date (trip) to England. However, her companion turns out to be someone she wouldn’t have dated, even if she had been blind! Acts of desperation lead people to say and do crazy things....in Jessica’s case, she finds herself making a wish upon a star for the perfect, undying love of a ‘chivalrous’ man. Not knowing her wish would be granted, Jessica is shocked, to say the least, when she finds herself whirled back in time to the year 1260, in Medieval England.

While there, Jessica meets up with Richard of Burwyck-on-the-sea. However, rather than the dashing rogue one might have expected, Jessica finds an inbittered man who, at first has the scared time-traveler wishing once again....this time for the safety and comforts of home. But, Jessica soon finds that her feelings have shifted and discovers that she’s falling in love with Richard. And to Jessica’s surprise, Richard comes around and realizes his feelings for his new companion are as equally deep. The chivalrous side of Richard shines through on numerous occasions. When Jessica is nearly killed, Richard marries the injured woman and tends to her wounds. But the King has different ideas for Richard. When he threatens the couple’s happiness and Richard’s estate, Jessica finds herself making a sacrifice of the heart by wishing herself back to the twentieth century so Richard is free to marry a woman of the King’s choosing. However, once home she is devastated, heartbroken and wants to return to the past and Richard.

The More I See You is a brilliantly written medieval romance that I found exciting, fun, romantic and adventurous. Readers who enjoy a good medieval romp, plus love the concept of a time-traveling hero or heroine will find the latest novel by Lynn Kurland a work of art!

Star Of Wonder (Anthology) Jove Books October, 1999 ISBN: 0515126535 4 Hearts (Fantasy Rom.)

This seasonal anthology is a magical collection of short stories centered on the power of love....and the star of magi (star of wonder) guiding women and aiding them with their love and affairs of the heart during the holiday season.

The first in this collaborative effort is by bestselling author, Jo Beverly. In A Day Of Wrath, which is set in 1999, England. This is the story of Hera, who upon returning home discovers that the Vikings defeated her father in battle. She has loved Raef for a long time, but he was married to another, now a widower, Hera find her comfort during these sorrowful times in his arms. However, Raef has vowed to never marry again as he fears he will lend nothing but more hurt to Hera’s life. But, with a little magical help from the Star of the Magi, Hera is able to convince Raef in the power of love.

The second story is Starlight Wedding, by Alice Alfonsi. This romantic short takes place in 1799, where a young and grieving Felicity is saddened for her inability to conceive a child. She finds the Star of Magi and meets William Court and although the couple fall in love with one another, not only does Felicity still longs for a child, but William finds it hard to open himself up and be the loving and warm person she longs for....until the magical star works its wonders on the unsuspecting couple, brightening both of their lives.

In The Last Kiss at the Loving Cup Saloon, by renowned new-age romance writer, Tess Farraday, readers are swept yet again to another era in 1899, where the hero, Joe finds himself with four abandoned children in need of a mother. As a last resort, Joe tricks his mail order bride, Katherine into taking care of the children. But little does Joe realize that the Star of Magi is working its magic and helps nudge the couple together.

A longtime favorite author of mine, Kate Freiman, shares her mini romance tale with readers entitled Joy to the World, which is set in the present, 1999 and is the story of a young woman named Angela who is grieving over the loss of her brother who died. But she is not alone in her loss, as her brother’s best friend, Joshua is there by her side, comforting Angela in her time of need. Together, through the tragedy the couple find strength and love in one another....thanks to a little help from the Star of Magi.

Star Of Wonder is a fun-filled adventures that gifts readers with several diverse tales of joy, loss, and love found. Readers who enjoy reading the seasonal tales of Christmas and all it entails, will find this unique anthology the perfect gift---four mini novels all wrapped up in one shiny package

A Ghost For Maggie by, Emily Carmichael Bantam Books September, 1999 ISBN: 3 1/2 Hearts (Ghost Rom.)

Robin Rowe (a.k.a. Red Robin) used to be an infamous madam in Jerome, Arizona. However, she was shot in her prime and now walks the earth as a ghost just as she’s done for the past one hundred years. Robbie has spent the last century watching her descendants botch their love life’s, which has left the spirit unable to move on. Robbie will not find peace until she can get through to the last of her female descendants left unmarried, Maggie Potter. If Maggie can find love, then perhaps all will be well.

Maggie Potter has no desire for men or relationships since having found herself named in a political sex scandal, which is why she finds it difficult to trust outsiders, especially men. So, Maggie fleas for a small town in Arizona with her sister, Catherine to start a bed and breakfast in an old turn of the century mansion. However, the sisters are unaware that the mansion comes complete with the ghost of a deceased bordello queen....an ancestor, to boot.

Having been following the ex-assistant to the governor in hopes of getting an inside scoop on the corrupt Ohio governor, Jack Kilbourne, reporter Colby Drake finds himself hiding behind a fake persona to keep his profession a secret in order to get Maggie to reveal secrets and dirt on her ex employer.

Maggie and Colby find themselves falling in love....after an abundant amount of coaxing and romantic “wooing” on the part of Colby, not to mention the sassy match-making ghost, Robbie. Though the story had a few holes and unanswered questions, if readers can get past the small flaws here and there and just enjoy the fun-filled antics of Robbie, along with the burgeoning romance between Colby and Maggie plus the colorful cast of secondary characters and their blooming romance, they are sure to enjoy this delightfully funny tale. A Ghost For Maggie is a splendid reading experience and I for one feel Emily Carmichael has carved a nice little niche for herself within the new-age romance community with her flowing and endearing novels.

Body & Soul by, Jennifer Archer Leisure / Love Spell October, 1999 ISBN: 3 Hearts (Paranormal Rom.)

Have you ever had one of those horrible days where everything that could possibly go wrong, does? Well, like everyone, heroine Lisa O’Conner is having a day just like that. She’s argued with her husband, Michael, her children have fought relentlessly, driving her near mad, and to top it all off, she drops all twelve eggs on herself earlier that morning....what more could possibly go wrong? Well, ever heard that old saying ‘ be careful what you wish for?’ In this case, Lisa finds herself at the driver through teller lanes of the bank, watching a pretty young woman, wishing she had her life instead of the ram-shackled existence she calls her own.

Not really putting much thought into her idle wish, Lisa is astonished to discover that an instant later she realizes that she and the young college student have traded places. Lisa is now in the body of the pretty law student, Tory Beecham. While Lisa has prefect recollection as to her former self and who she really is, Tory has developed amnesia and doesn’t remember a single detail about her former life. Feeling an odd sense of freedom, coupled with a scary feeling of the ‘unknown,’ not quite knowing what to do next, Lisa finds her way to Tory’s apartment where she soon discovers Dillan Todd, Tory’s live in boyfriend.

If all the new events of her life....or rather ‘Tory’s life’ aren’t strange enough, Lisa finds herself being hired as her husband, Michael’s assistant by his law firm. Now dealing with her husband on a brand new level, Lisa realizes the life and love she had with her husband and children isn’t really as bad as she remembered and longs to return. Body And Soul is filled with grins and giggles. Readers will delight in this new-age romance that gives housewives the world over a chance to live out one of the most ‘wished for’ fantasies there is....the ability to turn back the clock, before babies, stretch marks, wrinkles, diapers, husbands and commitments and simply ‘enjoy’ life to it’s fullest, but taking our knowledge of life and experiences to use as a guide -- what a concept! I thoroughly enjoyed this humorous tale. Jennifer Archer answers an age-old question with this tale that no, the grass isn’t always greener on the other side; the flowers and sunshine are just an illusion...if given the chance, most of us wouldn’t change a thing!

Dark Prince by, Christine Feehan Leisure Books ISBN: 4 1/2 Hearts (or)5?! (Vampire Rom.)

For lovers of the vampire romances, this one is a keeper. Ms. Feehan has come up with a slightly different version of vampire-like people for her book, Dark Prince. Mikhail Dubrinsky is a prince among his race, the Carpathians, but he has spent centuries alone and the aloneness has finally taken him to the point of considering suicide. He is the leader of a dying race and feels he has failed his people.

In his blackest moment, he suddenly hears a voice in his head; the voice of another telepathic person, but not one of his race. He finds his thoughts read by a human female, an American woman who is psychic. She gives him hope and the ability to feel emotions again, something he has not been able to do for centuries. For the first time in his life, he is intrigued and very attracted and, like the predator he is, sets out to capture this woman, Raven Whitney.

From that moment, the fireworks start. He finds her beautiful, the light to his darkness, but oh, so independent and feisty. She finds him handsome, intriguing, demanding and oh, so arrogant! He strives to capture her both mentally and physically. She fights him every inch of the way and refuses to do things his way.

Ms. Feehan does a great job developing both the characters and the plot. You learn about an entire race of people cohabiting with humans on this earth, but misunderstood, feared and hunted by those thinking they are vampires, only here to kill and corrupt. I had a hard time putting the book down. I so hope that Ms. Feehan has sequels planned for Gregori, Jacques and some of the other Carpathian people in this book. I will be first in line to buy them if she does.

I would have to give this book a 4++ or even a 5. I'll hang on to my copy in anticipation of the sequels. Don't miss this book!

After all, not only would it fit his plans and assist in getting Michael out of debt, but Penelope finds the resemblance between the Earl and the ghostly warrior from her dreams uncanny and has a difficult time thinking of little else than Michael.

The couple marries and does their best to make their vows and new life work. However this is a sinister man bent on destroying what they now share, whose greed might just succeed in tearing Penelope from her ‘spirited’ new spouse.

Touch Of The Wolf by, Susan Krinard Bantam Books October, 1999 ISBN: 5 Hearts (Werewolf Rom.)

Having been raised by her uncle after her parents died, Cassidy Holt Forster knows she has special powers and possesses the ability to shapeshift into a wolf, with her parents gone, Cassidy has no one to guide her in the “change” or show her how it’s done. Not knowing what else to do, Cassidy decides to travel abroad to England in an attempt to find her real family, the family Forster, the loup-garous.

Cassidy finds her path led straight to Braden , the Earl of Greyburne, the leader of the Cause. Braden has found his match in Cassidy, and he, too becomes her ‘Tyger,’ her love and her very life. However, the two find themselves torn as Braden devotes his entire life to the Cause, controlled by hid domineering grandfather, which sends him surging headfirst into the race for survival of the loups-garous. Cassidy does her best to brighten Braden’s self inflicted bleak existence, trying to bring happiness into his life with her sweet, care-free loving personality. But Braden thwarts any attempts to change his dour existence. Not only does Braden face losing his new love, but threats that could alter lives, end their existence and leave him insane begins a spiraling whirlwind that will leave the loups-garous very existence hovering on the brink of extinction.

Susan Krinard answers the call for more werewolf romances with her latest release Touch Of The Wolf. This bestselling author offers readers a masterfully written tale of the loups-garou that is both intriguing, well researched and original. The author gives readers a glimpse into a side of the werewolf legends and history which depicts not the usual snarling, salivating, blood thirsty beasts we normally find, but a family oriented, intelligent and provocative animal we wish more authors encompassed. Touch Of The Wolf is a wonderful start to what this reviewer sincerely hopes will be the first in a long line of ‘Wolf’ sequels gifting readers with the stories of some of the wonderful secondary characters Ms. Krinard introduced us to in this first installment. This is a novel worthy of the bestseller list!

The Dracula Tape by, Fred Saberhagen Baen Books October, 1999 4 1/2 Hearts (Fantasy / Supernatural)

The Dracula Tapes is the retelling of Vlad Tepes, a.k.a. Count Dracula. Anyone alive and breathing has heard, read, or watch the many versions of Count Dracula....that is just one side to the interesting story, another is The Dracula Tapes! Rather than the bloodthirsty, vile monsters portrayed by such authors as Bram Stoker, Saberhagen offers readers a new glimpse into the character we call Count Dracula; one of nature’s noblemen and the true story of the events surrounding the Count’s first trip to England in the year 1891.

This is an incredible novel that sweeps readers through the life, legend and history we thought we already knew! Anyone who enjoys writings by such authors as Anne Rice and Bram Stoker, will find this intriguing tale to be on of the best novels on the legendary figure to come along in years. Kudos to author Fred Saberhagen for sharing his enlightening version of Dracula with readers.

Sips Of Blood by, Mary Ann Mitchell Leisure Books (July, 1999) 4 Hearts (Vampire Horror)

Sips Of Blood is a darkly written erotic vampire story depicting the secret life of the Marquis de Sade. Having been transformed into an immortal vampire, de Sade finds himself walking the earth as one of the undead. Ever the aristocrat, he finds his pleasure behind closed doors; insuring his secret life and partaking of the dark pleasures he delves into. The decadence and torture of his secret life coupled with his driving hunger for blood and sex, sends the Marquis spiraling toward the dark pit of evil desires and a dark world of bondage, sadism and pain so pleasurable in it’s force that de Sade is surely to be damned regardless of his immortality.

Mary Ann Mitchell has written a spine-tingling account of the legendary vampire that paints a vibrant picture of the “dungeon” with its sex slaves and blood lust that some readers may find a bit offensive. Although a superbly written story, Ms. Mitchell has left so little to the imagination which, at times took the magic out of what could have been a five star (or in our case “5” heart) book. Readers who enjoy a good vampire novel by writers such as Anne Rice, will not be disappointed in Ms. Mitchell’s second release, Sips Of Blood.

The Silver Wolf by Alice Borchardt Del Rey / Ballentine July, 1999 2 1/2 Hearts (Werewolf)

The Silver Wolf is a difficult book to describe. I picked it up expecting a werewolf romance fantasy and found myself embroiled in the dark political intrigues of Rome in the Dark Ages. The heroine, Regeane, is a young, beautiful woman of royal blood who can change into a wolf at night. She is held captive by a brutal, greedy uncle who sees her as his ticket to future riches. When he betroths her to a northern barbarian lord and describes her future married life as something out of a horror novel with her husband likely murdering her when he learns her secret, she takes things into her own hand and escapes, only to fall into the hands of people involved in the political intrigue. Although the book did end with the hero and heroine in love and bound together for eternity, Regeane doesn’t meet her hero until late in the book and only has his help in saving her life in the last couple of pages. She is drawn into the lives of many characters and faces along period of struggle, betrayal and the loss of many friends, often in graphically violent ways.

This book isn’t for everyone. There is an episode of sex between the heroine and a courtesan who helps her escape from her uncle and there are explicit descriptions of murder, torture and other barbaric acts by people of that time. Several times I thought seriously of not finishing the book when some of the prose had no point in the story, or the extensive descriptions of the political intrigues of the time got burdensome, but then the action would start again and I would resolve to go on reading the story. I would rate this book only warmly as there was very little interaction between the hero and heroine and only in the last few pages. I felt they should have met so much earlier in the story and been given a lot more time together. But if you enjoy the obviously well researched history of Rome written with the werewolf fantasy thrown in, you will enjoy this book.

Dreamsinger by, J. A. Ferguson ImaJinn Books, 3 1/2 Hearts (FantasyRom.)

Nerienne, her guards and companion killed in an ambush, is compelled to join forces with Durgan Ketassian, a criminal condemned by her mother, merely to survive. Her country and Durgans not held by the Elaysians, set out with a small hungry group of survivors to find the ‘old ones’ no one else really believes in. With a betrayer in their midst, this is the only hope for the ‘first daughter’ to ascend the throne and bring peace.

While her duty is clear, her heart and passion are totally at odds with everything she believes , and this time Bidge, her pet and confidant is no help, either. In all the years since Nerienne found her, no one has ever been able to hear or understand Bidge. What gift does Durgan’s warrior disguise hide that enables him to not only hear Bidge, but to communicate with her as well as Nerienne does?

If the danger and betrayal the group goes through doesn’t hold your rapt attention, the growing love between Durgan and Nerienne will. Forbidden by her position as ‘first daughter’ and her mother’s pledge to a man she despises, their love still seems destined by fate.

Dreamsinger is truly a dream of a story. J. A. Ferguson has definitely penned an outstanding tale, a mini vacation in book form. With something for everyone, whether you are a fan of romance, fantasy, adventure or mystery, readers will find something to hold their interest in Dreamsinger. This remarkable story has introduced characters that I am hoping to get better acquainted with in the future.

A Love Through All Time by, Jean Nash ImaJinn Books 2 1/2 Hearts (Paranormal Rom.)

When actress Andrea Morrow moved from her home in New Jersey to New York, to further her acting career, she was full of optimism and possessed a bright , upbeat attitude that was contagious to anyone around her. However, the continued unexplainable visions that began the day she arrived in New York have caused Andrea to become withdrawn and disoriented. Not only does she envision brownstones, turn of the century Edwardian building where none should be....or to her knowledge have ever been, but she sees people dressed in old fashioned period costumes, and having strange flashbacks of another time and place.

After an audition she was passed on, Andrea visits her acting coach, Emilie LeBeau, who suggests she audition for the lead role of Evelyin Nesbit in a mini-series based on a book entitled Deadly Temptation. Andrea is shocked, to say the least, when she glances through the pages and pictures in the book with a disturbing sense of familiarity and discovers that many of the pictures are of buildings, places and people from a period 50 years before her birth. The most familiar of all the pictures, is that of Stanford White. When Andrea mentions the familiarity she feels to Emilie, the older woman suggests she meet with Geneva St. John, a friend of hers who has the gift of second sight, who might be able to help Andrea work her way through the strange visions and da’javu’ feelings she’s been experiencing.

At first, Andrea balks at the idea of seeing Geneva, who considers psychics, and fortune tellers to be a lot of ‘bunk.” However, shortly after her audition with Justin Dinehart, the co-producer/editor of the mini-series, while traveling on her way home on Route three, she hears what sounds like gunshots. Instinctively, Andrea ducks beneath her steering wheel and when she looks back up to right both herself and the car, she realizes that gone is route three which has been replaced by a narrow roadway with horse-drawn vehicles. Shortly after this incident, Andrea meets with Geneva who convinces her to allow Geneva to perform the regression.

With the regression performed and the truth of the past, the future and the very similar coincidences between both her life and that of the lives of the characters in the play is both uncanny and haunting, but Andrea knows not to repeat the mistakes of the past.....or does she?

A Love Through All Time is an entertaining and enjoyable paranormal romance which is very reminiscent to a favorite movie of mine. Readers who have seen the movie Somewhere In Time, with Christopher Reeves and Jane Seymore will find this “otherworldly” romance to be a pleasurable and romantic story of soul mates and timeless love. Readers will need to set aside several uninterrupted hours to read this story, as it tends to jump back and forth between time periods and the characters of the past and present so often that I found myself lost and having to re-read pages. Other than that one glitch, the storyline is richly detailed, moves quickly and has a colorful cast of endearing characters that will hold readers interest for countless hours of pleasurable reading. Jean Nash is a remarkable writer with a bright career ahead of her.

Free Falling by, Stobie Piel Leisure / Love Spell September, 1999 ISBN: 0505523299 3 Hearts (Time-Travel Rom.)

Cora Talmadge has been talked into jumping out of an airplane and parachuting by her best friend, Jenny. Since it is Cora’s first time to jump, she finds herself strapped to the instructor who just happens to be none-other than Adrian de Vargas, Cora’s ex-boyfriend. In spite of the odd circumstances, the jump goes well, until Cora and Adrian are caught in a mysterious whirlwind and are tossed into the nineteenth century Arizona.

Adrian realizes right away that something is amiss when gone is the sandy desert, now replaced by green grass. Cora, is a bit (did I say ‘bit’) of a ditz, she just figures they are lost. Even when Scottsdale never appears, after endless miles of walking. Once the wayward couple come across a cabin with a man and young boy living there, they attempt to find out their location and once again, Adrian finds it odd that they know nothing of cars, telephones, or any modern conveniences....but Cora, bless her soul, lost as ever, simply believes the people to be reenactors. After run-ins with bounty hunters, taking up with the local Apache Indian tribe, half-witted conversations with the ‘locals’ and an abundance of idiotic blatherings from Cora, the heroine finally figures it out....and the crowd cheers!

Lost in a strange world with her handsome ex-boyfriend her only connection to the life she left behind, do you think Cora and Adrian re-established their lost love affair? DUH?! Read the book.... Free Falling is a well written romance novel that loses so much of its luster thanks to the addle-brained antics and dialogue by Cora. I really found myself embarrassed for her at times and wondering why the author allowed her protagonist to be so stupid. In spite of this, I finished the book thankful that the couple worked their way through their adventure, ending on a happy note, but wishing Cora had been a little brighter and a lot easier to relate to. Perhaps Stobie Piel will try her hand at time-travel again, giving readers a strong, sensible and relatively smart heroine.

Frankly My Dear by, Sandra Hill Leisure Books October, 1999 (Reissue) ISBN: 0843946172 4 Hearts (Time Travel Rom.)

This is not your run of the mill time-travel romance, this book is unique in its hilarious comedy antics, dialogue and fun, with one of the sassiest heroine’s and topped off with a ‘Gone With The Wind’ setting that will melt hearts and win new fans over for this innovative author. The heroine in this witty story is a New York fashion model named Selene who finds herself hurled back to a time when voodoo drums hummed through the Louisiana swamps, and southern drawls and sugar plantations were a dime a dozen.

When Selene is hurled back to the romantic era she’d only ever encountered within the pages of a romance novel or on the silver screen, little does she suspect that the southern gentleman she encounters would be, well.....not so gentlemanly toward her. First the arrogant man tells her how unattractive she is; too thin and lanky without enough meat on her bones then he tops his rude comments off by telling Selene how much she resembles a wart-hog. In spite of James’ opinion of Selene and her short comings in the looks department, he hires her to teach his young son and to be a confidante to his mother, and hopefully in the end, to bring some semblance of order to his hectic household in Bayou Noir.

What James hadn’t counted on getting in Selene was a therapist, a cosmetologist for the women in his plantation and an aerobics instructor. However, she proves her worth when she makes her way to his room in the middle of the night just in time to protect James from the ghost of his deceased wife who has raised a knife over his head while he is sound asleep. Together this unlikely couple find a way to each other’s hearts and begin a timeless love affair that burns deeper and brighter than molten lava.

Frankly My Dear is a timeless love story that I am thrilled to see re-released for readers who missed out on this fascinating tale the first time around. Sandra Hill has made a mark for herself since we first saw this story released, with soon to be classics such as The Reluctant Viking, and the newly released Bewitched Viking. Readers who enjoy a fast paced, witty enjoyable tale with flowing dialogue, strong heroines we readers can relate to and romantic happily ever after endings will revel in all of Ms. Hills novels. Especially this one.

Upset and a little confused by the whole experience, Kasey returns home to Los Angeles, putting all thoughts to contact her mother on hold.

The center of the investigation circles around the man who had kissed some ten years earlier, Bronc. However, the couple are thrown together in the investigation when Bronc’s boss assigns him the job of escorting Kasey around for ten days. During this time the mutual attraction they have toward one another continues to grow and while their mind is caught on discovering the killer and lurking evil neither recognizes the fact that Kasey has the ability and power to defeat evil. Tess Farraday always comes through with a wonderful blend of sub-genres that combine to form a imaginative and completely enthralling tale. Blue Rain is a book centered around good and evil, spiritual belief, and the love of a couple full of suspicions, inner turmoil and depth that ignite the pages of the book when the finally give in to their feelings....and believe.

The Forever Bride by, Judith O’Brien Pocket Books October, 1999 ISBN: (not currently known) 3 1/2 Hearts (Ghost / Mystery Rom.)

In 1849 New York, spiritualist Celia Thomason makes a respectable living as by using her gift, thanks to the assistance of her Aunt Pru and her loyal and devoted servant, Patrick. When an Irish businessman named Garrick Stevens hires Celia to contact the deceased wife of his grieving brother-in-law, Brendan, he is sure the woman is using hoary parlor tricks and will not be able to contact anyone. However, ever the skeptic, Brendan at least hopes that the performance will shake Garrick out of his deep depression and put his grief behind him, and aid him in learning the truth about his sister’s death.

Surprising everyone, Celia makes the ghost of Amanda appear in her aunt’s home. More strange events follow when while eating dinner at the Astor with Brendan, Celia gets drunk and the next day has no memory of the events of the prior evening. Brendan makes Celia believe that they had made love that night, when in reality that is no where near the truth. Although Brendan is confused and unsure what provokes him to do so, he blackmails Celia into marrying him. To top matters off, Brendan then turns angry toward Celia when he believes her to be playing on his emotions and scamming him when his dead sister, Amanda reappears. During all of this, Celia begins to feel that Garrick is the person who killed Amanda.

Brendan and Celia work together with the help of his deceased loved on as a guide to finding the truth. Even though Brendan has many doubts about Celia’s spiritual abilities, he can never doubt his feelings toward the woman who slowly, but surely won his heart.

The Forever Bride is a complicated story that left me at times wandering through the pages of the book trying to find out what I might have missed, as I was easily lost trying to keep up with the storyline. Even still, once I found my place, so to speak, I found this to be an enjoyable historical new-age tale that left me with a good feeling when the last page was turned. Judith O’Brien is an excellent storyteller with the ability to bring a bygone era alive with richly detailed setting, enjoyable characters and a love story that is sure to put a smile on your face.

Jupiter’s Bones by, Faye Kellerman Simon & Schuster August, 1999 (hardcopy) ISBN: 067157759X 5 Hearts (Mystery / Thriller)

Bestselling author Faye Kellerman saw the release of her 11th Peter Decker-Rina Lazarus Mystery released this month. With ten predecessor bestsellers to her name, need we even wonder if the latest release will do the same? Hands-down....bestseller!

This story capitalizes on the media frenzy surrounding the widely publicized Heaven’s Gate, Waco, and Ruby Ridge. In this entry, Decker is investigating the mysterious death of Dr. Emil Ganz, an eccentric astrophysicist who gave up his world renowned success to turn his life over and transform himself in the cult leader ‘Brother Jupiter.’ He is also the highly acclaimed and vigorously criticized founder of Jupiter’s Order, which is a secret compound where both he and his devoted followers supposedly live in peaceful tranquillity.

When LAPD receives a mysterious phone call alerting their attention to the suspected death of Jupiter, investigators find themselves blockaded from the compound as the Order want to be left in peace to mourn their leaders death. However, as with any suspiciously murky death, the police have an obligation to investigate the cause, so Decker and his colleagues delve deep into the life and eventual death of Dr. Ganz and find that not only did the renowned leader have some enemies living amongst his own followers; which range from merely less than cooperative to out and out violent and hostile, but many, including his personal attendants who most likely hated him enough to end his life. Before the investigation is closed the they are faced with a tense standoff, talk of mass suicide and suspense filled dramatic rescue.

Faye Kellerman is a brilliant voice in the fiction arena. Although the new-age elements are lacking in this story, I simply couldn’t pass on the opportunity to include a review of this talented author and her latest release. Jupiter’s Bones is another fantastic insert into the famed Decker Mysteries that should not be missed....by the time you read this, it will most likely have been sitting on the best seller list for weeks!

Sunrise On The Mediterranean by, Suzanne Frank Warner (hardcopy) August, 1999 ISBN: 0446520918 5 Hearts (Time-Travel)

With the third installment of the Chloe/Cheftu chronicles, I found myself totally enthralled by what I feared would be a novel lacking the lustrous appeal of the first two in the series; and Shadows On The Aegean. However, Suzanne Frank has once again created a compelling time-travel tale full of vivid characterization, with historically accurate settings and a picturesque backdrop illuminating a by-gone era, set in the time of King David.

When Chloe Kingsley steps through he time portal in the year 1996, all she expected or hoped for was to find her missing husband, Cheftu and to gain some knowledge of the language and dialogue of the era. However, she finds herself being taken to the temple of Gaza by the Philistines who rescued her from the Mediterranean thinking her to be the tail less mermaid.

While Chloe’s adventure is just beginning, Cheftu is also bound tot he same time period in Egypt where he is facing punishment for disrespecting the Sun God. Shortly there-after, the circumstances shift, allowing the two time-travelers to once again reunite, but now they find themselves the vassals to King David. Cheftu does his duty by finding lost gold for the King, while Chloe works by helping with military strategies. The Hebrews are forced to deal with the evil RaEm, who lived inside Chloe’s body for two years, which granted her vast knowledge of the twentieth century. Together with both Chloe and Cheftu on his side, along with the Ark of the Covenant will King David rise above his enemy and defeat RaEm.

Sunrise On The Mediterranean, the third installment in this ancient historical saga is by-far the best to date. I thoroughly enjoyed the detailed historic setting and characters. I am looking forward to the next novel from this wonderfully talented star of fiction.

A Time For Dreams by, Jen Holling Harper Paperbacks August, 1999 ISBN: 00601014079 5 Hearts (Time-Travel Rom.)

As a child in 1980 Audrey Williams toured Scottish Castles with her parents. Being so young, each castle seemed very much alike, never standing out from one another...until she ventured away from the tour group at Drochaid Castle. While exploring on her own, Audrey found a corridor that not only did no one else seem to notice, but strange people dressed in period costumes inhabited. While walking through the unknown corridor Audrey meets up with a teenage boy who startles her, sending Audrey racing back to the entrance with its electric lights.

The Young boy, Brendan Ross; heir to an earldom, was equally startled by the strange lass dressed in an odd manly attire, and searched high and low for Audrey all through the castle, but never found her. Now, sixteen years later, having been haunted by horrible dreams and the suicide of her husband, Audrey decides to put an end to the dreams and get some answers to her questions by returning to Drochaid Castle to take another trip through the wall of time.

Once at the castle Audrey is knowledgeable enough about history to know that if Brendan succeeds in the plot to save Mary, Queen of Scots, his life will be over. Knowing this, Audrey travels back in time to change his mind. During the sixteen years since Brendan found the young girl wandering the halls of his castle, he, too has been haunted by strange dreams of the young girl he saw walk through a castle wall and into his life.

Brendan, now the Earl of Irvine and the older wiser and much more beautiful Audrey have a second chance encounter. However, Brendan cannot get past his death bed oath to save his Queen and because of this vow, refuses to change his plan, even though the reunited couple fall in love amidst the betrayal, danger and intrigue taking place around them.

A Time For Dreams is a masterfully written and vivid depiction of sixteenth century Scotland. Jen Holling has incorporated just enough history and vivid splendor of a by-gone era to bring this moving tale of time-travel, love and dangerous intrigue to life. I read this book in one sitting, savoring every page. If I had just one complaint, it would be that the story ended much too soon, leaving me wanting more!

The Promise by, Donna Boyd Avon (hardcopy) October, 1999 ISBN: 0380974509 4 Hearts (Werewolves)

Set in New York, this story is the tale of Nicholas Devoncroix who’s parents are mysteriously murdered. Because of their unexpected deaths, Nicholas, being next in line, then becomes the head of the pack of werewolves who have been hiding out and secretly living unknown to man for countless centuries. Nicholas decides that the first order of business in his new role is to weed out the bad traits many of his kind have picked up from humanity...and possibly separate. To make this happen, he calls a pack meeting in Alaska.

Without knowing the turmoil brewing around her, Hanna Braeselton North travels to the Alaskan frontier where she and her husband Tom came to admire the wolves and spend time together, before he was murdered. Hannah has planned for this to be her final resting place and she cannot bear life without Tom.

While in the Alaskan wilderness, Hanna sees a helicopter crash near her camp site, so she goes searching for survivors. Finding no humans, Hanna stumbles upon an unconscious wolf who she starts nursing back to health. Hanna also discovers a mysterious book that gives a detailed accounting and stories of the werewolves and their secret society. Nicholas slowly begins to recover from the accident and Hanna now wonders if he isn’t one of the shape-changing beings described in the book. Nicholas later discovers that a bomb was planted on the helicopter with intentions of murdering him. Both Hanna and Nicholas worry what might become of them if the person or being responsible for the bomb discover their leader is still alive.

The Promise is an interesting book that centers around the werewolves and how they relate to humans in a world not real accepting to anything different from their ‘own’ kind. The characters in this story both lead and supporting give readers the sense that just such a society might very well exist. Donna Boyd writes with a deft and clever hand. This ‘promising’ new release will make a fantastic new edition to many readers’ prized ‘keeper’ shelves.

Night Whispers by, Karen Sandler Jove Books (Haunting Hearts Line) September, 1999 ISBN: 0515125849 4 1/2 Hearts (Ghost Rom.)

Jove and their Haunting Heart’s Line always succeed in bringing new-age readers the opportunity to suspend their imaginations, soar high above reality and simply ‘enjoy.’ With Karen Sandler’s release Night Whispers, readers can do just that!

When Indians alert Noah Simmons to a fortune hidden within the Hoyo del Diablo cavern, he can hardly pass on an opportunity to line his pockets and make his fortune. Even if it means ignoring the outburst of warnings to beware of a ‘monster’ residing in the dark caverns. After all, it’s little more than a far-fetched tale made up to scare people away from the treasure, right? Wrong! Thanks to his greed and ignorance in facing the warnings given repeatedly, Noah Simmons winds up dead and living out his ghostly existence trapped within the cave. Lonely as a ghost can be, Liz is the first woman Noah has seen in well over a hundred years and falls head over heals in love with her, spending the rest of this haunting book as her guardian angel, of sorts.

Liz Madison is a botanist who have planned and trained long and hard for the BioCave experiment but is devastated when she learns that she will be unable to participate. The ridiculous reason she is not included is due to the fact that the millionaire backing the project deemed that all parties be married as they will be cooped up underground together for long periods of time. In an act of desperation, Liz proposes marriage to geologist, Ethan Winslow, and even though she cannot stand him as he is arrogant and cold and has treated her poorly in the past, Liz will do anything to take part in the experiment....even marry the enemy, and only so much interfering from a jealous ghost will help once the couple reach a certain point.

Although the story dragged on a bit at times, the otherworldly new-age aspects made this book a fun-filled read. If you enjoy ghosts, intrigue, a little suspense thrown in and your books topped off by a sizzling love....even if it did take this couple ‘long enough’ to get their act together, then you are sure to enjoy Karen Sandler’s latest romantic treasure, Night Whispers.

The Lady In The Loch by, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough Ace Books September, 1999 ISBN: (currently unknown) 3 Hearts (Fantasy)

Having recently been appointed the sheriff of Edinburgh, Walter Scott thinks he will have the much needed free time to work on his novels as the job as sheriff couldn’t possibly keep him ‘that’ busy. However, Walter finds little time to hone his craft as he finds various skeletons, body parts and corpses littering the shoreline of the local loch. Walter first thinks the murders to be related to grave robbers looting the dead and leaving the bodies to rot onshore. But he soon changes his mind when he discovers that local Gypsy women are being abducted and never seen again.

The people in the town are not real worried about the missing women, after all, they’re just gypsies. However, their opinions soon shifts and changes when Midge Margare informs the sheriff about a mysterious coach that appears about the same time the women have all disappeared. Walter, no longer able to enjoy his free time, sets his writing aside to follow up and investigate the going’s on in his community, unknowingly delving into the mysterious disappearance and deaths opens a whole new can of worms as he now finds black magic working through his peaceful hometown.

Highly acclaimed author, Elizabeth Ann Scarborough has created a wonderful historical mystery with all the fun elements that have made her a bestselling fantasy novels such a success. Although not true to Walter Scott’s time period, the writer stays on target with his persona and weaves her magical creativity that makes The Lady In The Lock a fantastic story to dive into.

Spirit Of Love by, Rachel Wilson Jove Books October, 1999 ISBN: (not currently known) 2 1/2 Hearts (Ghost / Supernatural Rom.)

Bored with society and all it entails...including her stuffy fiancé, Georgia Witherspoon decides it’s time for some adventure in her life and when her aunt sends a letter telling her that she is upset over her mother who is seeing a ghost, Georgina can’t get to the New Mexico Territory quick enough. When Georgina arrives, she is met by the town’s handsome sheriff, Ash Barrett. Ash and Georgina do not hit it off at first. When the couple are getting into the wagon, a shoot out occurs and when Ash pushes her down under the seat, thinking he is protecting her, Georgina gives him a piece of her mind for having caused her to miss out on the excitement. In Ash’s opinion, the delicate...and mouthy blue stocking reminds him of his ex wife, but still the attraction is there and whether or not he likes it, Ash finds himself at her aunt and grandmother’s home more than he can reason to explain.

Spirit Of Love is a light hearted, uncomplicated tale of two people who prove how well opposites attract. Although the ghost in the story (a former lover of her grandmother’s) takes a back seat to the rest of the story...he is there and when he makes his appearance it lightens the story and makes you smile. Rachel Wilson has long been a favorite writer of mine, and I eagerly look forward to reading each of her ‘otherworly’ tales she creates for Jove and their Haunting Heart’s Line....however, this story while good, could have been a bit better. It was a bit slow and dragged at times, but over-all still a great book due to the wonderful writing skills of Ms. Wilson.

-Marti Witherspoon

Now, five centuries in the future in the year 1999, American, Dr. Honoria Fitzhue stumbles into an unknown Roman Cistern and discovers Renaissance artifacts, including the statue of Dominico. Working with the Italian Government, Honoria finds that the statue had great hopes for being the ‘find of the century’ tests out as being made with some unknown material, rather than the ancient stone she hoped would aid her career along.

Cupid: The Amorous Arrow By, J.M. Jeffries Imajinn Books October, 1999 (ISBN: currently unknown) 5 Hearts! Cupid: The Amorous Arrow is a modern-day fairy-tale romance with snippets of Greek Mythology and its players woven into the storyline.

Brought in front of the disciplinary committee, Cupid finds himself given one last chance to bring two soul mates together and right a wrong, or face the possibility of being demoted to something as disgraceful as God of Toxic Waste.

Because of an age-old feud between Fortuna, Goddess of wealth and prosperity, and Cupid’s mother, Venus; Goddess of Love, Fortuna does everything in her power to keep Cupid from accomplishing his goal...and saving his position. Cupid’s quest is to unite two of the most un-likely soul mates ever. Amberlin O’Rouke, an accomplished but unknown painter, working as a plumber to pay bills, and Jeremy Barrett, grandson of Frederick Barrett, tycoon of Barrett’s department store...born with a silver spoon in his mouth. A real Cinderella-type romance...minus the fairy god mother replaced by Cupid.

Jeremy first notices Amberlin when she returns some stolen merchandise to the store that her aunt Cecilia Luna snatched. Apparently Cecilia has been stealing merchandise from Barret’s for almost forty years, always to be returned, as a vendetta of sorts and an attempt to get the attention of the man she loves, Frederick Barrett. Jeremy’s grandfather.

In the end, all’s well that ends well, and Cupid, with a little magical match-making help from Venus, brings the couple together and defeats Fortuna. Even better still, is the secondary love connection made between Frederick and Cecilia, bringing closure to this story for a doubly romantic happy ending.

The comic relief provided by Bernice, Frederick’s outspoken secretary, and Venus and her flighty romantic liaisons with every God on Mount Olympus will have readers giggling their way through the pages of this delightful tale.

Kudos go out to Imajinn Books and the promising new writing team of J.M. Jeffries and their charming new debut romance. Cupid’s Amorous Arrow is a magical “feel-good” story that is sure to leave readers with a smile on their face and their fingers crossed, waiting to see if Cupid gets his own story and a chance at true love.

If the forthcoming releases from this new publisher are anything close to the quality of Cupid: The Amorous Arrow, Imajinn Books is sure to be a success, giving even the “proven” publishers in the market a run for their money!
