Again, the title of this
section is borrowed from the Baen collection of this name. You might consider
the stories and essays listed on this page as a sort of corrected, expanded Trails in Darkness. I hope to someday see a collection like this appear. It’s just heart-breaking that this material is
yet to be brought together in a comprehensive collection.

What I can’t figure out is
why wasn’t this collection the one that was released
by Bison Books. “The Black Stranger,” “Marchers of Valhalla,” “The Gods of
Bal-Sagoth” and “Black Vulmea’s Vengeance” could be covered in an article about
Howard’s use of Americana in these stories, but they really have no place in a
collection such as what The Black
Stranger could have been. Where was “The Shadow of the Beast?” Where were
“The Haunted Hut” and “The Shadow of Doom?” Where were “The Man on the Ground,”
“‘For the Love of Barbara Allen,’” “Moon of Zembabwei,” “Black Hound of Death,”
“The Devils of
