Lun'g Chang on ego: From Pieces of Heaven

Traveling south, Cho met a man traveling north. At the mountain pass the two exchanged words and finding much in common decided to dine together, there at the summit, before each would descend from whence the other came.

Both were on a quest for knowledge, a pilgrimage of sorts. Both had traveled to many lands and knew many languages. They had gathered the wisdom of the great civilizations and were now seeking solitude, yet here they met.

Each listened carefully to the other, gleaming useful bits of information about the perilous path up the other side of the mountain. As the conversation grew more philosophical, Cho's new friend, Chow, revealed the reasons for his journey.

"By purposefully renouncing material wealth and glorifying knowledge, I hope to transcend the common ego-state and rejoin the Eternal Tao."

Cho was a man of few words and knew better than to banter with one who is obviously more skilled at this art. So, for much of the conversation Cho listened. He tried to express his view that the ego is a tool for consciousness to manifest. Therefore, the ego is to serve the body, not the other way around. When the body is used only to satisfy the ego, the results are always detrimental to the whole. For there is truly no separation of mind/body/spirit.

As they parted, Cho chose his words with great care, "We are never alone."

He turned his back on the icy wind and never looked back to see Chow crying.
