From Tales & Trails of Bailey County, the First 70 Years, Taylor Publishing Co, Dallas, TX 1988W.S. "Tom" Turner, his wife Altha, two daughters and one son came to the Needmore Community in Bailey County in December 1929 from Odell in Wilbarger County, Texas.Tom was born January 14, 1893 in Oklahoma to Walter and Ida Turner. He met Altha at Odell, Texas. They were married December 24, 1922 in a double ceremony with Tom's sister in the family home in Odell. To their union three children were born: Mary, Mae, and Richard. To establish a new beginning they moved to Bailey County to be tenants on land that had been purchased by Altha's father, Joe Towry. They moved into a new frame house and enjoyed the use of a large new barn that had recently been completed. Their animals, farm equipment, and household possessions were shipped aboard the Santa Fe Raileway to Sudan.A few years later they were joined by Victoria Miller, Altha's grandmother, who lived with them for several years, she was deceased on the farm at the age of 92.After a few years the land was purchased from family heirs. In the beginnin, the farming was done with horses, then later a Farmall tractor was purchased. Cotton, grain sorghum and cattle were produced on the land. Most of the marketing and business was transacted in Sudan. The road to Muleshoe, across the sandhills, was not passable much of the time.Their children were all reared on the farm, and attended school at Circle Back. Both Mae and Richard attended Sudan High School where Mae graduated. The first year of residence was the first year for the Circle Back school to operate a school bus. Previously the students were delivered to school in the back of a truck. During cold weather they would unload at the Turner residence, warm while the driver continued his route to the south, and then returned for them.Tom and Altha celebrated their 50th Anniversary on December 24, 1972 at Needmore. Tom enjoyed games and was often seen in the middle of a domino game. He was deceased September 21, 1975 at Muleshoe at the age of 81.Altha continued to live on the family farm until May 1983, she then left the farm and moved to Muleshoe.
