AT THE TIME OF THE FLIGHT, NUMEROUS INTENSE THUNDERSTORMS WERE REPORTED BETWEEN THE USS CORAL SEA AND THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF VIETNAM. AT ABOUT 0400 HOURS, LTJG GOODWIN REPORTED THAT HE WAS ENCOUNTERING A THUNDERSTORM (VICINITY XE 678 593) AT 38,000 FEET ENROUTE TO THE TARGET AREA. THIS WAS THE LAST RADIO TRANSMISSION RECEIVED FROM LTJG GOODWIN. (REF 1) (U) A PICKET DESTROYER REPORTED LATER THAT IT HAD OBSERVED A FRIENDLY IFF (IDENTIFICATION FRIEND OR FOE) NEAR THE COAST OF NVN, BUT HAD BEEN UNABLE TO ESTABLISH COMMUNICATION WITH THE AIRCRAFT. LTJG GOODWIN FAILED TO RETURN FOR THE SCHEDULED RECOVERY ABOARD THE USS CORAL SEA. AT DAYLIGHT, SEARCH EFFORTS WERE CONDUCTED OVER THE TARGET AREA AND ADJACENT COASTAL WATERS WITHOUT SUCCESS. NO EMERGENCY RADIO SIGNALS WERE HEARD, AND NO WRECKAGE WAS SIGHTED. LTJG GOODWIN'S NAME DID NOT APPEAR ON ANY CAPTURED OR DIC LISTS. THE TEAM OBTAINED NO REMAINS,PERSONAL EFFECTS, OR MATERIAL EVIDENCE DURING THIS INVESTIGATION. PROVINCE OFFICIALS HAD NO KNOWLEDGE OF ANY DOCUMENTS CORRELATING TO THIS CASE. ON 10 AND 11 JUL, THE TEAM CANVASSED RESIDENTS IN BAC LY WARD, DONG HOI TOWNSHIP (FORMERLY LY NINH VILLAGE); AND RESIDENTS IN THE TARGET AREA ASSOCIATED WITH CASE 0139, WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS. ON 13 JUL, THE TEAM INTERVIEWED MRS. CAO THI DIEN WHO PROVIDEDLIMITED INFORMATION ON THE SHOOTDOWN OF AN F-105 IN 1967-68. THE BURNING AIRCRAFT CONTINUED SOUTH AND DID NOT CRASH IN ANY OF THE NEARBY VILLAGES. THE TEAM THEN CANVASSED RESIDENTS IN MINH HOA AND CO LIEM VILLAGES, MINH HOA DISTRICT, WITH NEGATIVE RESULTS.
