The State of Texas - County of Hill

To the Hon: J. W. Stevens County Judge of Hill County A.D. 1877

The Petition of Mary Ann Ables a resident of Hill County and said state would respectfully represent that she is the surviving widow of Harrison Ables and that the said Harrison Ables died in the year 1860.

That she has not married since his death. That the said Harrison Ables cause to the Republic of Texas in the latter part of the ear 1835 and was a soldier in the army of the Republic of Texas during the war between Texas and Mexico between the years 1835 and the first of January 1837. And petitioner further avers that she is in indigent circumstances and needs the pension which has been granted by the State of Texas to old veterans or their widows for the purpose of an actual support, wherefore she prays for Judgement for a pension.

Personally appeared before me James M. Duncan, Clerk of the County Court in and for Hill County, Mary Ann Ables who being by me duly sworn says that all the facts stated by her in her application for a pension to the County Court are true and correct, which said facts are set forth in the foregoing petition.

CONTRIBUTOR’S NOTE: Listed below are those that provided affidavits towards the identity of Mary Ann Ables.

J. S. Able – Travis County D. C. Worrel – Hill County Alexander C. Kellum – Hill County

No other information was offered by the affiants. Mary Ann Ables Pension was approved in Nov. 1877 for $187.50.

Also enclosed is a affidavit from J. W. Stevens, Judge in Hill Co., Texas noting that Mary Ann Ables was still residing in Hill Co. as of March 1878. There are also several handwritten letters from Mary Ann Ables to the Comptrollers Office in regards to her quarterly payments.

A handwritten letter dated Jan. 1898 in regards to a move from Callahan Co. to Taylor Co.

Notice of change of address to Dublin, Erath Co., dated July 1900.
