Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.  the oldest and first Black Greek Letter sorority in the United States, was formed in 1908 on the campus of Howard University.  Nine woman, led by Ethel Hedgeman Lyle, strove for "the way", which is now called Alpha Kappa Alpha.  Today there are over 150,000 members, approximately 870 chapters in Africa, Germany, and the Virgin Islands.  Our sorority is a sisterhood of college women with common interests and goals that live and work together,  enjoying a unique, close friendship.  Each chapter is affiliated with the national organization, which directs and assists meeting the sorority's goals.  Local alumnae also work with the chapters, and give guidance and help, so that the members enrich their college experiences by membership in the sorority.

Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc. being aware of the increasing complexity of women's problems, especially those of African-American women, realizes the necessity of forming an organization for the purpose of studying and solving such problems.  Thus, AKA was formed for the purpose of cultivating and encouraging high scholastic and ethical standards, improving the social stature of the race, promoting unity and friendship among college women, and keeping alive, within graduates, an interest in college life and progressive movement emanating therefrom.  This is the purpose of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Inc.
