Butterfly

Janet Taylor is twelve years old when the story begins. She has been living in orphanages since she can remember (Prologue).

Sanford and Celine Delorice adopt Janet (Ch1).

Daniel runs off and marries a woman who he got pregnant (Ch10).

Celine loses her mental stability (Ch12).

Janet is sent to The Lakewood House, a group foster home (Epilogue).

Crystal

Amanda Perry is diagnosed as a manic-depressive and is institutionalized at age seventeen. She is impregnated by a hospital attendant and later gives birth to Crystal, who is immediately taken into custody by the state. Amanda commits suicide at age twenty-two (Prologue).

At age fourteen, Crystal is adopted by Karl and Thelma Morris, who live in Wappinger Falls, New York (Ch1).

Martha, Thelma's mother, dies of a heart attack (Ch7).

Grandpa, Thelma's father, suffers a stroke soon after his wife's death and has to be placed in a full-care facility (Ch8).

Karl and Thelma Morris are killed in a car accident (Ch11).

Crystal is sent to live at The Lakewood House, a group foster home, where she meets her new roommate, Janet (Epilogue).

Brooke

Brooke's mother was too young to take care of her young daughter. Not quite two years old, Brooke was dropped off at the children's protection service in Monroe, New York. Her mother then disappeared (Prologue).

At age twelve, Brooke is taken home by Peter Thompson, an attorney, and his wife, Pamela, a former runway model and beauty queen (Ch1).

Tired of Pamela's indifference, Brooke cuts off her own hair, which sends Pamela into what she calls rapid age degeneration and heart trouble (Ch10).

Brooke is sent to live at The Lakewood House, a group foster home, where she meets two of her new housemates, Janet and Crystal (Epilogue).

Raven

When the story begins, Raven is 12 years old. She is the illegitimate daughter of Mama Stack and a Cuban man (Prologue).

Mama is arrested and sentenced to drug rehabilitation. Uncle Reuben and Aunt Clara become Raven's guardians (Ch1&2).

Mama runs away from the rehabilitation center and becomes a fugitive (Ch4).

After suffering mental, physical, and sexual abuse at the hands of Uncle Reuben, Raven is taken to The Lakewood House, a group foster home, where she meets her roommate Brooke, and two other housemates, Janet and Crystal (Epilogue).

Runaways

Brooke, Butterfly, Crystal, and Raven live at The Lakewood House, a foster home run by Gordon and Louise Tooey (Prologue).

Butterfly is almost adopted by Mr. and Mrs. Lockhart, but Louise sabotages the deal by telling them that Butterfly has major psychological problems (Ch1).

Crystal and Butterfly are framed by Megan Callaway, who plants cigarettes in their room. Raven and Brooke get revenge by blackmailing Megan with a nude photograph (Ch2).

The girls run away from The Lakewood House by stealing Gordon's station wagon (Ch3).

The girls are accosted by three motocyclists. Brooke runs them and their bikes over to get away (Ch4).

The girls spend two nights with Norman and Nana Stevens, but are later accused of stealing by their son, Gerry (Ch5).

The girls pick up a wordly hitchhiker named Sunshine. She tells them tales of her adventures, gains their trust, and then steals their money (Ch6).

The girls find cocaine stashed under the back seat of Gordon's station wagon and get rid of it (Ch7).

The girls meet Patsy at the Crossroads Restaurant, who gives them free room and board and jobs in her restaurant so they can earn their stolen money back (Ch7).

Butterfly gets the measles (Ch8).

Raven sleeps with Taylor Cummings and doesn't use protection (Ch9).

Danny and his friends spy on Brooke in the shower. Brooke confronts them and they run off. Later, Danny tries to frame the girls by stealing the restaurant's deposits and planting them under their sofa. Patsy believes they didn't do it, but the girls leave anyway (Ch9).

When the girls reach Illinois, the car overheats. Brooke finds Todd Mayton, a mechanic, who fixes the water pump, and captures Brooke's heart (Ch10/11).

The girls meet Theresa James in the parking lot of an all-you-can-eat buffet and give her a ride to her home in Morrisville, where they discover that she is homeless and lives in a cardboard box (Ch12).

The girls find Caroline Forbas, whose husband, George, has had a heart attack behind the wheel of their camper. Brooke drives them to the hospital while Crystal performs CPR. At the hospital, the girls are discovered to be runaways and are taken to the police station (Ch13).

Gordon arrives to take the girls back to The Lakewood House, but more so to find out what they did with his cocaine. He forces Brooke to stay in his hotel room and ties her to him with a rope. She escapes and the girls steal the car again to get away (Ch14).

The car runs out of gas in the desert and the girls spend the night under the stars. In the morning, they are found by Tommy Edwards, an Indian policaman, and are taken to his home. He calls the FBI and Child Protective Services when he learns their story (Ch15).

The FBI locates Gordon in New York. He is arrested and The Lakewood House is shut down (Ch16).

Butterfly is adopted by Tommy and Anita Edwards. Brooke, Crystal, and Raven are returned to New York where their new foster homes await (Ch16).

Crystal is accepted to Harvard medical school (Epilogue).

Butterfly graduates from college and Tommy and Anita have a baby boy named Steven (Epilogue).

Brooke moves to Illinois and marries Todd Mayton (Epilogue).

Raven becomes a singer and actress in Los Angeles (Epilogue).
