Kassidy and Kevin were off on their honeymoon. Kevin had taken Nick showing up really well. The wedding had been great and just the way they had planned. The couple was heading to Gatlinburg, TN for their honeymoon. Grace was house-sitting while on winter break. AJ had decided to hang around and keep her company. He had a few days until the start of the final leg of
the US Tour.
Mid-week, Grace wasn't sure how it had started, but suddenly she found herself in an argument with AJ. He had been giving her a hard time about going to school in Iowa. He said it was the middle of nowhere. He again offered to pay her tuition to go somewhere else. She told him no. He then started quizzing her on the guys she was seeing. There had only been the one guy, but still AJ was being all protective. Grace sat quietly, trying to not argue with him, but he kept pushing until she finally snapped.
"AJ you have no say in who I see."
"Yes I do. You're my Pooh and I look out for my Pooh. You don't know guys. I'm one, so I know guys."
"Not all guys are like you!"
AJ stopped short and asked, "what's that suppose to mean?"
Grace was past the point of caring about his feelings so she answered honestly. "It means not every guy is going to always keep it causal. You're too scared to let anyone in."
"And you're not?"
"Yes I am," she yelled. "But I don't use people to make myself feel better."
"You don't know how to feel better. You always have you nose stuck in a book. You're hiding from the world Grace! Grow up and stop hiding then maybe someone can love you!"
The color drained from Grace's face as she whispered, "Get out."
"What?"
"GET OUT," she screamed. "Get out of my face. Get out of this house. Get out of my life!"
"Fine I will. See ya!"
AJ stormed out of the house. Grace knees buckled and she curled up on the floor crying. He confirmed every fear she ever had. No one could love her. She would always be alone and now she had lost AJ too. What was she going to do?
After lying on the floor for awhile, she got up and went to the bathroom to get a Kleenex. Blowing her nose, she looked in the mirror. She hated how she looked when she cried. Her face got as red as a tomato.
She wandered into the living room and lay on the couch flipping through channels. She stopped on the Disney Channel. She almost laughed when she saw "Backstreet Boys In Concert" was on. Isn't that how life always happens? The one thing you don't want to see or hear is the one thing that comes barreling into your space. She watched the guys bowling. She laughed at AJ. He was so excited he won. He didn't even realize Brian let him win. Or maybe he did, but didn't care. The tears were flowing again.
A knock at the door brought her around. Blowing her nose quickly, she attempted to straighten herself up. She looked out and saw it was AJ. He was holding flowers. She opened the door.
AJ held the flowers out, saying, "I'm sorry."
"I'm sorry too."
"Am I forgiven for being an ass?"
"Yes."
"Pooh?"
"Yeah?"
"Can I come back in."
Grace giggled and let him in. AJ pulled her into a hug. He inhaled her scent. She always smelled sweet. When they pulled apart, he kissed her gently on the lips, before tucking some of her hair behind her ear. She took the flowers and went into the kitchen. AJ followed and helped her locate a vase. After the flowers were in the vase, they walked back into the living room. The concert was over. Grace turned off the TV.
"AJ do you really think no one could love me?"
"Grace listen to me. You nailed me on some of my behavior so I lashed out. I was wrong."
"But still."
AJ interrupted, "Grace don't you realize how loved you are? You are so loved by your family, your friends, all the guys, Kassidy, and who knows who else."
"I guess."
"Wrong. Know it. Besides," he started, as he placed her hand on his heart. "You know you got mine. You are my Pooh."
Grace looked at her hand against his chest. She could feel the material against her skin, but she could also feel the warmth of his body. The warmth stayed with her even after she moved her hand. Now if only she had his heart like he had hers.
They talked awhile then went to bed. Grace had been sleeping in Kevin and Kassidy's room while AJ took the guestroom. This night, he came in and slept with Grace. She laughed at his smiley face boxers. He thought she looked cute in her wife-beater and boxers. He crawled into bed and pulled her close to him. She tangled her legs with his and he wrapped his arms around her from behind.
As Grace drifted off to sleep, she whispered, "Love you AJ."
AJ whispered back, "Love you too Pooh."
The next day they did one of AJ's favorite things - shopping. They worked their way through the biggest mall in Nashville. AJ made Grace try on a very un-Grace outfit. It was tight, black, leather pants with a halter type top that was bare in the back except for the ties. It was glittery silver material. He liked the way she looked so he bought it for her. She protested but he won. He also bought her boots to complete the outfit.
That evening they went out to dinner then dancing. There were certain advantages to being with AJ McLean; the bouncer never even questioned Grace about her age. They went in and danced all night. Girls kept asking AJ to dance, but he politely turned them all down. Grace felt like she was in a dream. She kept reminding herself this was just AJ making up for the fight and she didn't truly have his heart.
The last dance of the evening was a song that was a year old. It was "I Want To Be With You" by Mandy Moore. To Grace the words of the song were meant for them. She wrapped her arms around his neck and let him move her body as she got lost in the music...
I try but I can't seem to get myself to think of anything but you
So I'll hold you tonight like I would if you were mine to hold forever more
I wanna be with you
Oh, baby
I wanna be with you
Grace hadn't realized she had whispered the last line. Her warm breath tickled AJ's ear. AJ pulled back and looked at Grace. She smiled up at him before she turned to walk off the dance floor. AJ's eyes dropped to her bottom. He realized he had never really checked out her ass. He also realized he had been missing something. She had cute butt and the leather was hugging it nicely. He followed her off the dance floor and out the door.
On the drive home, he held her hand. When they got to the house. She changed into her wife-beater and boxers. AJ was already in bed when she walked out of the bathroom. AJ watched her move. When she was relaxed, like now, she moved with such...well...grace. She lay down facing him. He stared in her eyes.
It was what he saw in those eyes that made him wake up and realize he couldn't do what he had intended. He had wanted her since leaving the club and made up his mind that he was going to have her that night. Her eyes changed his plans, for when he looked in them he saw complete trust. If he were to do this tonight, he would loose her forever. He made a promise to himself that he would never be causal with Grace or her feelings. After kissing her tenderly, he had her turn over so he could pull her body back against his. She snuggled up against him and he softly sang her to sleep.
They enjoyed the rest of their time together and at the end of the week welcomed Kassidy and Kevin home. Their goodbye was emotional, because they really had become best friends. They got on their separate planes and went back to their separate lives.
Your breath on my face your warm, gentle kiss I taste the truth, I taste the truth
We know what I came here for
So I won't ask for more
I wanna be with you
If only for a night
To be the one who's in your arms to hold you tight
I wanna be with you
There's nothing more to say
There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way
I wanna be with you
And I'll savor each touch that I've wanted so much to feel before, to feel before
How beautiful it is
Just to be like this
If only for a night
To be the one who's in your arms to hold you tight
I wanna be with you
There's nothing more to say
There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way
I wanna be with you
I can't fight this feeling anymore(anymore)
Drives me crazy when I try to
So call my name and take my hand
Can you make my wish, baby, your command(command)?
Yeah
If only for a night
To be the one who's in your arms to hold you tight
I wanna be with you
There's nothing more to say
There's nothing else I want more than to feel this way
I wanna be with you
Oh yeah
I wanna be with you
Wanna be with you, ooo, yeah
I wanna be, I wanna be
Chapter 26
Grace Johnson, Magna Cum Laude in Medicine," read the University President as the Dean handed Grace her degree.
"GO POOH," yelled AJ.
Grace's head shot up at the sound of his voice. She saw him jumping up and down with Kassidy. She had sent him an invitation, but never expected he would attend her graduation ceremonies. They had stayed in touch, but it had been a year since she'd last seen him. Grace was busy with college. AJ was busy being AJ.
After the ceremony, Grace found AJ standing with her parents, Kassidy and her husband, Kevin. She had to bit her tongue to keep from laughing. AJ was bouncing his leg and fidgeting as he waited with her parents. Her parents kept giving him sideways glance. Grace knew her parents didn't understand their friendship. AJ was unlike anyone they knew, with his tattoos and wild clothes. Good thing they couldn't see the ring that now adorned his left nipple. AJ was dressed down in a cobalt blue Prada suit with matching hat and sunglasses.
Grace walked up behind him and with a poke of his shoulder said, "You sneak!"
AJ spun around, taking her in his arms, saying, "My Pooh is a graduate! I'm so proud of you!"
"We are too sweetie," said her father.
AJ sat her down and she stepped into a hug from her parents, replying, "Thanks Dad."
"Now that you have just graduated Grace Johnson what are you going to do," asked Kevin.
"I'm going to Disney World," said Grace, everyone laughed.
Kassidy said, "Have I mentioned you rock?"
"Not today."
"Well you do!"
"Thanks."
"Grace," called a tall blonde.
"Hi Wayne!"
"You partying with us tonight?"
"I don't know. My family and friends are here."
"They can come too."
"Yeah that's just what my parents want to do," chuckled Grace.
"What time is the party," asked Kassidy.
"It starts at 8."
"Sweetie why don't we all go to dinner then you can go out with your friends after that," suggested her mom. "Your dad and I will just go back to the hotel. We need to rest up for the long drive tomorrow."
"You sure," asked Grace.
"Yes," replied her father.
"Cool. Grace see you later?"
"Sure Wayne."
"And bring your friends."
"OK. See ya."
Wayne jogged off and Grace led the way to the parking lot. Kevin, Kassidy, and AJ rode with Grace to her apartment. Her parents had elected to stay at a hotel so Grace wouldn't have to pack around them. They were loading up their car and Grace's in the morning and heading back home. AJ was quiet in the car. Grace played tour guide showing them around the campus and town. They met her roommates at the apartment, then helped her pack.
Grace's roommate Cindy made Grace go with her on a box run. Once in the car the interrogation began.
"I can not believe you didn't tell me you knew the Backstreet Boys," exclaimed Cindy.
"It never came up," stated Grace.
"Grace! So every time you said you were going to hang out with friends, you meant them."
"Not every time, but yeah a lot of the time."
"I've been your roommate for two years and had no idea."
"Cindy it's no big deal."
"Grace yes it is! You know the Backstreet Boys. You not only know them, but you hang out with them. You are apart of their circle. For heaven's sakes, AJ McLean calls you his Pooh!!!!"
Grace laughed, "I know, but still."
"No! Tell everything!"
Grace answered all of Cindy's questions about how she met the Boys. In turn she also told her about Maddie meeting Howie and how they all became friends. When she talked about Kassidy and Kevin, she omitted the part about Nick and Kassidy being involved.
Cindy couldn't believe she had been at both Kevin and Brian's weddings. Grace also explains how she had spent most of her summer breaks dividing time between home, Kassidy's, or hanging out with BSB.
The summer after her freshman year she had helped Kassidy set up house in the home she and Kevin had bought, then gone to Sweden with the guys they recorded with Max Martin. The next summer she had spent time at home while doing research for a correspondence course. When that was completed she had
joined guys on the road. By that time Maddie was traveling with Howie full time. This past summer she had spent the summer at AJ's house.
When she explained her life, she had to admit it was different. At school she was the good little college student. She was focus on her studies, but had fun. However, her time away from school was spent hanging out with celebrities, but to her they were just friends. She had never made a conscious decision of not telling anyone at school about her friends. It never came up. Not once did she think to brag about knowing them. Maybe that's why she had always been in their circle as Cindy put it.
She and Kassidy had stayed in contact and Grace saw her at least twice a year. Kassidy had settled into her life with Kevin. They were happy. Kassidy loved Kevin, but Grace knew Nick still had a piece of her heart. The couple defied the prediction of them living and working together being the doom of their relationship. They both loved their jobs and the company they worked for, so it made it easy to leave work at work. Kevin also welcomed the Backstreet Boys and company into his life. Whenever Brian came to Nashville to meet with his attorney, Kevin would make sure they had a tee time. Nick would call from time to time, but he was the one who kept the most distance from them. Kevin understood and on some level was glad. He liked Nick, but believe the more distance he kept from Kassi the better.
Maddie called Kassidy all the time. She and Howie had fallen madly in love and very cute together. Maddie liked shocking Howie and he liked being shocked. Also his family adored her. Kristen and Leighanne had continued to act over the last two years, with the support of their husbands. During this time, the Backstreet Boys were touring and recording.
"Since you spend all this time with AJ, what do you think about his carousing?"
"I don't. It's his business. Plus he doesn't really do it around me."
"He doesn't?"
"Nope."
"Interesting. Well Grace you will be known as the girl with the double life from now on."
"Ha! Ha!"
Following dinner, Grace and AJ said goodnight to the others and went to the party. The girls falling over each other to get AJ's attention amused Grace. He was had fun dancing, but kept an eye on Grace. They were at one of the Frat houses on campus. He didn't bother to remember which one.
He watched Grace flirt and laugh. The guys were all vying for her attention and he didn't like it. He told himself it was because he was protective of his Pooh. That worked up until, a big jock type picked up Grace and kissed her. Grace the kiss ended with her swatting at him. He laughed and put her down. She playfully punched him in the arm then pulled the guy named Wayne onto the dance floor. He watched them slow dance through one song. When another slow song started AJ moved to the dance floor.
"Wayne mind if I cut in on you. I haven't danced with Grace all night."
"Sure. Later Grace."
"Having a good time," asked Grace as AJ pulled her into his arms.
"Not as much fun as you."
"What do you mean?"
"Nothing. It's just I've never seen you flirt so much. And what's up with Jock boy?"
"Who? Oh Brandon? Nothing. He's just really happy, because he has a try out with Tampa Bay and he graduated thanks to me. I tutored him through the last two years."
"Hmmph."
"What is your problem Alex?"
"I ain't got a problem."
"Fine. Excuse me," she said before moving off the dance floor.
"No problem," AJ replied to her retreating back.
When she turned back to look at him, he was dancing with one of the cheerleaders. She could see the change in him from across the room. He had gone into player mode and the girl was all for it. Grace decided to ignore him for the rest of the night. However, she did see him leave with the cheerleader.
The next morning Grace opened the door of her apartment to find Kassidy and Kevin, but no AJ.
"Morning Grace. Ready to pack up," asked Kassidy as she stepped inside followed by her husband.
"Sure am. AJ's not with you?"
"No. He's not here," asked Kevin.
"No. I guess he is with Wendy."
"Why is he with her," asked Kassidy.
"They hooked up last night and he left with her."
"Let me get this straight, he left you at a party to get some from another girl."
"Yeah, but Kassidy it's not like you think. I was there with all my friends. I just hope he gets here before Mom and Dad show up."
Kevin asked, "When are they getting here?"
Looking at the clock, Grace answered, "About 30 minutes."
"Oh he will be here. Where does Wendy live?"
"You remember the apartments next to the shopping center on the road you turned off to get here?"
"Yes."
"She lives there. Kassidy what are you doing," asked Grace.
"You don't want to know. Now I need the apartment number and a car."
Grace hesitated, but could tell Kassidy's mind was set. After obtaining Grace's keys and the apartment number, Kassidy was on her mission. She found the apartment easily. A very groggy girl answered the door.
"Good morning. Wendy?"
"No. She's in her room."
"Thanks."
Kassidy breezed past the girl into the apartment. Stopping in the kitchen for a hand full of ice, before finding Wendy's room. She opened the door slowly, breathing a sigh of relief that they were merely sleeping. She stepped up to the bed and looked down at AJ. He was sprawled out face down with his arm draped over Wendy's waist. Kassidy slowly lowered the ice to AJ's lower back. It took a few seconds for AJ to feel it, but when he did he sat up quickly, cussing. This caused Wendy to wake up too. They both looked at the woman standing by the bed.
"Kassidy," exclaimed AJ.
"Who are you," yelled Wendy.
"You weren't paying attention, I'm Kassidy. Alexander James you better be dressed and in the car in one minute."
"AJ where are you going."
"It was fun Wendy but I gotta go."
"Who are you his mother?"
Kassidy leveled her gaze at the girl saying, "You need to shut up."
The girl's mouth opened then closed again. She pulled the sheet up higher around her body. AJ dressed in record time. Grabbing his shoes from the living room he headed out the door with Kassidy closely following. They got in Grace's car and Kassidy started driving back to Grace's place.
"Kassidy."
"You need to be quiet right now AJ."
"Come on Kassidy lighten up. You ain't my mom."
Kassidy pulled to the side of the road. "How old are you AJ?"
"You know I'm 26."
"Then act like it."
"What?"
"You heard me. Do you have any idea how mad I am at you right now?"
"Duh. But why?"
"First of all, you leave your friend at a party. You take off. I don't care if she was on her own turf you came with her you should have left with her. Second, what the hell happened that made you go all Boner?"
"I don't know. I guess I figured she didn't need me around. All the guys were talking to her. Then this jock kissed her."
"You were jealous!"
"Was not!"
"Alexander."
"I just didn't expect them to all be lookin' at my Pooh."
"So? I mean you haven't laid any claim to her."
"No. We aren't like that."
"Then you have no right. So suck it up. Now back to you acting your age."
"Kass."
"Shut up, I'm talking. You need to stop sleeping with anything that catches your eye. Were you at least safe last night."
"Always Kassidy."
"That's a relief. But really AJ, this can't be as fun as it use to be. Where is the challenge anymore?"
"I don't know."
"Well think about it."
"All right. Are you still mad at me?"
"Mad no. Irritated yes. I gave you my thumbs up with Grace's parents yesterday. I said you were not what you appeared to be and you had a heart of gold. Then you go and pull this stunt."
"Sorry. You really think that about me?"
"I wouldn't let you near Grace if I didn't. Also I wouldn't waste my time on you."
"Kassidy the bad ass."
"Don't you forget it."
Grace and Kevin relaxed when they saw the two friends walking in unscathed. They had even managed to beat Grace's parents. Everything was loaded in the car. Grace said goodbye to her roommates. They promised to stay in touch.
Grace's parents were arguing about her driving by herself, even though she was following them. She looked helpless when her mother insisted on riding with Grace. As much as Grace loved her mother, she really didn't think she would survive being in a car with her from Iowa back to Missouri.
AJ volunteered to ride with Grace. He explained he had been able to attend the graduation, because they were on a break in the promotional tour. He had two days before he had to get back. Grace was happy to have him come along. Not only would she not be stuck in the car with her mother, but now she had one on one time with AJ. They dropped Kassidy and Kevin off at the airport and set out.
Chapter 27
"What happened with Kassidy?"
"Let's just say, I never want to see that side of her again."
"What did she do?"
"Doesn't matter, I deserved it."
"Why?"
"I shouldn't have left you alone at the party."
"AJ I'm a big girl. I was perfectly safe."
"I know, but still I was there as your guest and I just left. I won't do that again."
"Cool. Well Kassi looked like she forgave you."
"Yeah. She was just being Kassi and looking out for both of us. However, I don't want to disappoint her again. There are really only two other people that knowing I disappointed them would bother me more."
"Who?"
"Mom and you."
"Me?"
"Yep, cause you're my Pooh."
"Oh I see."
They continued to follow her parents out of Iowa into Missouri. They arrived late and headed to bed without unpacking the cars.
During the night AJ crept into Grace's room and convinced her to spend the summer with him. Her parents were not pleased, but after much yelling gave in. Grace was excited because she was going to have a fun summer before starting Med. school. Plus she would see Kassidy when the tour stopped in Nashville. Of course spending time with AJ wasn't a hardship.
"Grace it's good to have you back with us," greeted Howie as Grace boarded the plane.
"Thanks Howie."
"How does it feel to have your degree," asked Kevin as he walked on the plane behind her.
"Relief. How is married life?"
"It's wonderful," answered Kristen who followed Kevin onto the plane.
"Pooh we are sitting here," directed AJ as he dropped his pack in a chair.
"I see you are taking the window seat."
"Did you want it?"
"Nope."
"Oh you," scolded AJ.
They took their seats. Nick, Candace, and Brian brought up the rear. Leighanne was working on a new movie and would join them in two weeks when filming was done. Suddenly there came the thud of running feet. Appearing in the door was a red head.
"Whew. I made it."
"Why were you running," asked Nick.
"I needed to get gum and was afraid you guys would leave without me."
"Honey I wouldn't leave without you."
"Thanks babe. Grace," she exclaimed, hugging the younger girl.
"Hey Maddie. Good to see you."
"You too. Now if only Kassi was here we would have the whole crew."
"Yeah, but I think her hubby might not like that," joked AJ.
"He could have come with us," offered Brian.
"Oh no. Two Kevins? I would stay so confused," declared Maddie.
"Maddie you crack me up," said Howie as his girlfriend took the seat next to him.
"That's why you love me."
No one, except maybe Kassidy, thought her asking Howie to look after her friend Madelyn would lead to a two-year romance. However, Maddie had always had a thing for Howie D and Howie was attracted to her humor and honesty from the moment he met her. They stayed in touch when she went back home.
She finished getting her Masters in psychology and he continued working. At her graduation, Howie asked her to move in with him. She said yes and they dealt with the fallout. Her mom was having a hard time letting go. It had been the two of them for so long. She relented when she spent time with Howie and realized how much he loved her daughter. His family loved Madelyn, but wasn't pleased with them not getting married before living together. They finally relented and said they trusted Maddie and Howie to do what was right for them. Maddie had moved into Howie's house a month before the tour started. They had fallen into a comfortable relationship and were an anchor for the traveling circus called Backstreet.
"You still not use to flying Pooh?"
"No."
"Come here."
AJ pulled her close. He placed his mouth next to her ear and began softly singing. Grace concentrated on AJ's voice. They were in the air before she realized it. She pushed the nagging worries about school to the back of her mind. She was just going to enjoy this adventure. She would worry about real life when it was time to go back to it.
"Are the guys on stage doing the sound check right now?"
"Yeah."
"Cool. How is it going?"
"All right."
"Explain."
"I don't know Kassi. I'm just wish I knew why I was here."
"To take a break. You've worked really hard this year."
"I mean why AJ wants me here."
"Because he cares about you and wants to spend time with you. And did I just hear AJ wander in?"
"You did. I will talk to you later Kassidy."
"Hang in there."
Grace watched AJ take a seat across from her. She had been on the tour for three weeks with five to go. In that time, she and AJ had hung out together. They always had fun, but it was still on a friendship level.
"Why did you have that question," asked AJ.
"Because I don't know why I'm here. I have to be cramping your style with the ladies. I mean you've spent all your time with me."
"So."
"So you aren't getting all your...umm.needs met," said Grace as her cheeks turned red.
AJ laughed and pulled her into a hug, saying, "Pooh I'm fine in that area. I'm not a complete horn dog."
Grace looked at him with an eyebrow cocked.
"OK maybe I am, but I wanted to spend time with my best friend. I realized how much I missed."
"You really consider me your best friend."
AJ thought for a moment before replying, "well yeah."
"Wow."
"Silly Pooh."
"Watch it Boner."
"What's he done now," asked Nick as he walked into the dressing room.
"Nothing," answered AJ.
Everyone walking in ended the conversation, but Grace felt better. She never realized AJ thought of her as his best friend. It made her smile.
"Kassidy why are you frowning?"
"Grace and AJ," she answered as she hung up the phone and went back to cutting out the coupons spread out on the kitchen table.
"Sweetie you have to let them work this out."
"I know Kev and that's what frustrates me so much."
"I know. I know. The world would be a better place if it would just get with your program."
"Of course! Has your life been better since you signed on?"
"Most definitely," he replied as he bent to kiss her.
"Are those keys I see?"
"Yes they are. I'm going over and help Denny finish the deck."
"Good. I put a roast on so dinner time is flexible."
"You want to come with me?"
"Nah. I'll stay here and do some cleaning. I will give you a massage when you get home."
"Hmmm that is incentive to get home early," he said as he leaned in for another kiss.
Kassidy said, "If you don't go you won't get back."
"All right. I'm out of here."
Kevin stopped at the door and said, "I love you wife."
"I love you husband."
