"Hello."
"Kassi?"
"Yeah. Grace?"
"Yeah. Hi. How are you?"
"Good. You?"
"I'm OK."
"Just OK?"
"My parents are driving me crazy!"
Kassidy laughed, "You've been home a month. I guess that is about the right length of time to reach parent saturation. Thanks for the tape of the new song. It's great."
"Thanks. So what are you doing?"
"Nothing much. Just working. Do you miss being on the road with the guys?"
"Kinda. I don't miss seeing AJ and Miss Thang."
"I hear ya."
"But I do miss everyone. Heck I even miss AJ. Shoot me now."
"No."
"I was teasing."
"I know. Sorry."
"Kassidy are you sure you are all right?"
"Of course. I wish people would stop asking me!"
"Sorry."
"No I'm sorry. It's just I get it all the time. Guess I've reach my saturation point."
"I understand. Well I need to go. Mom wants to use the phone."
"OK. Thanks for calling. Talk to you later."
"Yep. Bye."
Grace sat for a moment, before searching in her purse. She retrieved a card, dialed the number on it, and waited for an answer.
"Hello?"
"Michael?"
"Yes. Who is this?"
"This is Grace."
"Oh hi Grace. How are you?"
"I'm fine. How are you?"
"I'm good. What's up?"
"Well I just got off the phone with Kassi and she didn't sound right."
"She didn't?"
"No. I don't know what it is but she didn't sound like herself."
"Tell you what I will wait until tomorrow and call her at work. So she doesn't put it together that we talked and go all defensive."
"OK."
"No problem. Grace what is your number and I will call you tomorrow."
"Thanks!"
Grace gave Michael her number. After she hung up the phone she made her way to the kitchen. Funny she hadn't expected her dad to be over. Grace stopped outside the kitchen door when she heard her name mentioned.
"I'm telling you the sooner we get Grace settled into medical school the happier I will be," said her dad.
"I know. I'm just glad she came home early from hanging out with that group."
"You what," asked Grace as she rounded the corner.
"Were you listening to our conversation."
"I didn't mean to, but when I heard my name I figured I had a right to hear what was being said Dad. Now Mom go on."
"Grace I will not apologize for being relieve you got the music thing out of your system and are ready to pursue a real career."
"Music is a real career and Brian told me I could make a living at songwriting."
"Don't be ridiculous Grace," exclaimed her father. "He is just a musician who got lucky."
"He's very talented Dad and he believes in me!"
Her mother interrupted, "Sweetie we just want you to be practical."
"My God he believes in me more than you do! He said I could do music or medicine or both!"
"Now Grace."
"That's it! I'm going for a drive. I will be back later!"
Her parents called after her, but she never stopped, grabbing her purse and keys on her way out the door. She tore out but as she left their street she made herself slow down. She didn't need a ticket or a wreck. She couldn't believe she had done it. It was the first time she had ever walked on her parents when they were double-teaming her. She realized it felt good.
She had finally stood up for herself. Maybe being around the guys had been good for her. She didn't buy into what her parents were saying about her. For the first time she felt like she could do whatever she wanted. It was a freeing experience.
She drove around and wound up at Wal-Mart. She giggled, because it and Target were two of her favorite places. She and Kassidy had laughed when they found out that they both had a thing for the two stores. She walked through the store. Thumbing through the posters she, of course, found BSB. There were even new individual ones of the guys. AJ looked so good. She always loved when he looked over his sunglasses at her. Sighing, she went on with her shopping. At the check out counter she saw one of the tabloids with a picture of AJ and the dancer. The headline read, "Backstreet Boy finds Backstreet Girl on Tour." Grace bought a copy.
She pulled it out of the bag once in the car. The article said sources close to the Boys were speculating this was the one for him. Rumor had it she was even moving in with him when the tour ended in two weeks. Grace couldn't stomach anymore. She put the paper away. She drove around some more until she found herself in front of her sister's apartment. She decided she must be in sad shape to even consider going in. Actually, the visit hadn't gone badly. While Grace was away at college, Lindsey had finally managed to get her own identity separate from Grace. She had mellowed a lot. Grace found herself telling her sister everything. Lindsey listened and gave her some good advice. If he can't realize what he's
got in you then screw him. They talked about their parents. Her sister told her it was about time she stood up for herself. They promised to get together that weekend to shop.
Grace got back to the house late. Her mom was already at work. She was channel surfing when the phone rang. She hoped it was AJ, but it wasn't.
"Hello."
"Grace?"
"Yes. Who is this?"
"It's your handy dandy buddy Brian."
"Oh hi Brian."
"Gee that was warm and loving."
"Sorry. I am happy to hear from you. How are you?"
"I good and don't apologize. I know you wanted it to be AJ."
"No I didn't."
"Grace."
"Fine."
Brian laughed, "hey someone wants to say hi."
Grace listened and heard sniffing.
"Did you hear him?"
"Yes. Hi Tyke. So Brian why did you call?"
"I wanted to check on you and see if you been by a newsstand."
"I saw it. I hope she makes him happy."
"Grace we knew you would think it was true. Hang on. Yes she saw. Yes. Grace, Leigh wants to talk to you. I have to get ready for the show. See ya."
"Bye Brian."
"Grace?"
"Hi Leighanne."
"Sweetie don't believe that trash. They are the same ones who reported I had Liddy Leigh by cesarean."
"Is he involved with her?"
"I wouldn't call it involved. I would call it her trying to get her hooks in him and him being bored. One thing is definite, she's NOT moving in with him. She is going right back to LA."
"Still Leigh if it's not her, it will be someone else."
"I don't know what to tell you sweetie. I could just bop him one."
"You aren't the only one. Leigh I just can't watch it anymore. It hurts too much."
"I understand. Well we miss you. You hang in there. Plan to fly out for a visit before heading to school. You can stay with Bri and me."
"Maybe."
"You have our number Grace. Really do try. Have you talked to Kassidy?"
"Yeah earlier this evening."
"And?"
"She sounded strange. I called Michael. She is going to call and check on her tomorrow at work."
"Grace let me know what Michael says."
"I will. You better go help your man get read for the show."
"You would think at 29 he would be capable of dressing himself," laughed Leighanne.
"One would think. Leigh thanks for calling me."
"Grace you are part of our family now. We all love you."
"I love you guys too. Talk to you soon. I will work on the visit."
"Please do Grace. Talk to you later sweetie."
Grace hung up the phone. She found herself crying. She was crying, because they had thought about her and called. She cried because she missed them all terribly. Mainly she cried because she wanted AJ to see her as the girl for him.
Chapter 32
"What do you mean she hasn't been in the office since the week after Kevin died?"
"Ms Andrews let me transfer you in to Mr. Cruz. I think he can explain."
"Thank you."
After a moment, a man's voice came on the line. "Ms Andrews, this Lawrence Cruz. I'm Kassidy's boss. I understand you are her friend?"
"Yes. Call me Michael. Mr. Cruz why has Kassidy not been in the office in so long?"
"Call me Lawrence. Michael she was not focused here. On the Wednesday, after Kevin died she asked if she could work at home for the time being. I agreed because she looked worn out."
"Has she been getting her work done?"
"Yes, but judging from the e-mails she's not getting much sleep. She is sending them at all different hours. Should I be concerned?"
"Yes! But I will be there tomorrow to check on her myself."
"Well let us know if we can do anything. We all think the world of her. I should have been more sensitive to what's been going on, but I've been dealing with the staff. Kevin was also a part of our family here and
it's a double whammy for the staff."
"I understand. I will keep you apprised of the situation," assured Michael then hesitated. "Lawrence is there any reason why Kassidy can't continue to work away from the office?"
"No. Why?"
"I think I will bring her back here with me."
"That sounds like an excellent idea. Where is here?"
"Oh sorry. Lexington KY where we grew up."
"Let me know if you are able to convince her."
"Will do. Thanks Lawrence. Bye."
"Bye Michael."
Michael hung up the phone and called her husband. He immediately said go. She then called Lee who said she watch Michael's 4 year old daughter while her husband was at work.
After hanging up with Lee, she called Grace. Grace in turn called Leighanne. In less than hour, all of BSB knew what was happening with Kassidy. Nick started to call her, but Kevin stopped him. Nick
demanded to know why and Kevin explained that Nick didn't need to tip her that Michael was coming. It had passed along with the story that Michael was going unannounced. Nick didn't sleep well that night consequently neither did Candace.
The next day Kassidy opened the door to find her best friend. Michael took one look at her friend then walked past her into the house. She went around opening the curtains and shades. Kassidy had done this when her parents died. She wore all black and never left the house.
Even with a yelling match Kassidy would not agree to go to Lexington. Michael had reached her limit with her best friend. She did accomplish one thing. To get away from Michael, Kassidy had gone to pick up some dinner for them. While Kassidy was gone, Nick called.
"Hello?"
"May I speak to Kassidy?"
"She's not here right now. Can I take a message?"
"Yeah this is Nick."
"Hi Nick. This is Michael."
"Oh hey Mike. How is she?"
"She not good. She's been shut in this house since the week after Kevin died with all the curtains drawn. She's completely shut herself off from the outside world. Well except for continuing to work. Lee and I always called her in the evenings and she never mentioned working at home."
"When are you taking her back to Lexington?"
"I'm not. She refused. Even though we fought she won't go. It's scaring me Nick."
"If you're scared I'm scared. I wish I could pick her up and carry out of there. And when the tour was over I would take her home with me. How long are you going to be there?"
"I'm staying through Sunday, then Lee is coming down for next week."
"Good. Maybe I can visit when the tour is over."
"That would be good Nick. I hear her pulling into the garage."
"Go. Talk to you later Michael."
"Later Nick."
Nick hung up the phone. He was unaware Candace was listening to the conversation. She finally could not ignore what she had known from almost day one, Nick loved Kassidy Rivers. He cared about Candace, she had never doubted it, but she knew he loved Kassidy. She loved Nick, but realize
a long time ago that they were not the one for each other. She was comfortable with Nick. She actually had become too comfortable. When she heard him talking about Kassidy she came to terms with the fact that she was ready to move one.
Candace walked all the way into the dressing room. Nick greeted her with a hug before he was pulled away to do sound check. Candace spent the time calling her parents. She made her flight arrangements. She would leave the next day. She pulled Leighanne out to the loading dock of the venue and explained what was going on. Leighanne told her they would miss her, but she had to do what was right for her. Leigh and Brian had talked on more than one occasion about how Nick and Candace were merely settling for each other.
After the show, everyone loaded on the bus. Candace pulled Nick into the back section. Leighanne had told Brian what was going down, before the show, but neither of them said anything to Nick or the others. It was Candace and Nick's story to tell. They just waited to see how Nick would handle the news.
At first, he was shocked. He didn't see it coming. He started to get mad, then he felt bad. He knew she was right. He apologized for not loving her more. She said the same to him. She then told him he was a good guy and to go get Kassidy. They hugged. They had been together for over 3 years. Candace told him she would have her stuff moved out by the time he got Kassidy to his house. She made a point of telling him she would take only her stuff, because she had heard all about Angie. He knew she was never
like Angie.
The next day he saw her off at the airport. On his way the venue he called Grace. He ran his plan by her. She thought it might work. She called Michael. Michael then went to work on the things that needed to be done there. It took both Lee and Michael working together, but by the end of the following week everything was in place.
"Lee does she suspect."
"She suspects something, but she doesn't know exactly what's going on. She thinks either Grace is coming to stay with her or you are coming back to help me drag her to Lexington. I don't plan on letting her know she's wrong."
"Good plan."
"Who's on the phone," asked Kassidy as she walked in from her nap.
"Michael."
Kassidy called out, "hi Michael. No I'm NOT coming to Lexington."
Lee laughed, "she said shut up."
"Cool by me. I'm not going."
After Lee hung up the phone, she walked into the kitchen and found Kassidy making dinner. A dinner she would only pick at and not really eat. Lee had managed to get Kassidy out shopping. However, her mood and clothes were still the same. 'black.' Lee just prayed what Nick had in mind would work. She
was watching her friend slip away before her very eyes.
"You all made this tour a success. Thanks for working so hard," said James Michaelson, BSB Tour Manager. "Stay here and party as long as like, just remember we all have to be cleared out the hotel by noon tomorrow."
The Firm had rented the ballroom of the hotel BSB was staying at in Atlanta for the end of tour party. The show had been fun. Everyone had gathered in the ballroom to unwind and say goodbye. Nick walked in with a duffel bag in hand.
"Nick," called Brian when he saw his friend enter the room.
As Nick walked up, Leighanne asked, "You leaving for the airport?"
"Pretty soon."
"We will bring your bags with us when we come down next week. You can get them whenever. Do you have everything you need in that bag?"
"I think so. Thanks for keeping my stuff."
"No need to thank us Nick. Are your ready to take on Kassi," asked Brian.
"Yes."
"Nick it's time to go," interrupted Billy.
"Thanks man. Be right there. Bye guys see you in a couple of days. Tell everyone else thanks and bye," requested Nick as he hugged Leighanne and Brian.
"Sure Nick. Call us if you need anything," said Leighanne.
Nick headed out of the ballroom, but was stopped by Kevin. "Nick."
"What?"
"Good luck."
"Thanks."
"If you need help, call."
"I will. You just get home to your wife. I'm sure the little mommy is missing you."
"I'm missing her too. I leave first thing in the morning. Call when you get back and let me know how things are going."
"Will do," said Nick as he walked out the front door of the hotel.
Chapter 33
Kassidy turning her back, stretching and opened her eyes letting out a scream. Nick was calmly looking down at her. He never let on how bad she looked. He had been watching her sleep ever since getting to the house. It had allowed him time to look at her without her seeing his reaction. She was pale. Though Lee said Kassidy had apparently slept through the night dark circles were etched into the skin under her eyes. Even under the sheet he could tell she had lost too much weight. He also knew she was still
troubled by the way her face kept scrunching up into a frown as she slept.
"Carter what are you doing here," she asked.
"I came to see you grump."
"Oh goody."
"The tour ended last night and I thought were can I go to be picked on. Kassidy's!"
"Ha Ha!"
"I suggest you get out of that bed and get ready."
"Ready for what?"
"To spend time with me."
Kassidy scowled, "all right. Get out."
"Why?"
"Because I don't have anything on and I need to dress."
"I don't mind watching you dress," teased Nick.
"Nickolas Gene Carter get out!"
Nick laughed and trotted out of the room. He found Lee in the kitchen.
"I take it she's up," said Lee.
"Yep. Lee, I didn't know she was that bad."
"I know. What time is your flight?"
"1:30."
"Here's some coffee. You don't look rested either you know."
"Gee thanks," said Nick with a chuckle.
"Any time dimples," teased Lee, causing Nick to blush.
He asked, "is everything ready?"
"Yes. I put everything in my car while she slept this morning."
"Good," replied Nick as they heard Kassidy's bedroom door open.
"I'm up and dressed. Are you happy now," groused Kassidy, walking into the kitchen.
"The bathrobe is a start, grumpy," answered Nick.
"Here have your caffeine before you hurt him," ordered Lee.
"Thanks. Carter why are you really here?"
"Kassi did you know you have 6 weeks of vacation saved up?"
"Yes. It's my vacation time. Wait! What are you up too?
"Kassi, listen to me," started Lee as she sat down across from her friend.
"Why," said a suspicious Kassidy.
"Michael talked to Lawrence."
"What," exploded Kassidy. "You guys had no right."
"Oh yes we did," yelled Lee. "You are our friend and you slipping away. You've given up on yourself. We are not letting it happen."
"I am not. Even if I am so what it's my life. I get to do what I want with it!"
"No you don't. Not when you're not thinking clearly," exclaimed Lee.
"Nick are you ever going to tell me why you are here?"
"I came to take you home with me."
Kassidy looked back and forth between her two friends. Well she wasn't sure they were friends anymore. Why couldn't everyone just leave her alone?
Lee started again, "Michael talked with Lawrence. He wants to you use four weeks of your vacation and go to Florida."
"How does he know about Florida?"
"Because Michael told him. He said he didn't care where you went as long as you got out of the house and started living again. He also agreed to you continuing to work away from the office. So in a month you can begin working from Nick's house."
"What will you be doing Nick? Babysitting me?"
"The tours done. We are taking the summer off. I plan on relaxing, but I will be your babysitter if needed."
"What will Candace think?"
"Candace thinks it's a good idea."
"Really?"
"Yes."
Looking back at Lee, she asked, "Tell me how you've handled the rest of my life."
"Jessie is coming over to housesit. She is so excited about being here for the summer. She can't wait to have no roommates."
"I suppose you packed for me too."
"Actually, I did."
"I can't not believe this! When do I get a vote?"
"You don't," said Nick.
"What about church? I told them I would help teach the youngest class."
"Ian has found a replacement."
"Nice to know how easy it is to remove me from my life," said Kassidy as tears stung her eyes.
"Kassi you removed yourself from your life. Ian said you haven't been to church since the funeral. You've worked from here," Nick gently said.
"Well excuse the hell out of me for being a little down after burying my husband!"
Lee intervened, "Kassi, let's go finish getting you dressed. You can look around and see if there is anything else you want to take with you."
They left Nick in the kitchen. Kassidy allowed Lee to lead her to the bathroom. She showered and dressed, again in black. She liked black. She had always worn black as her main color. Why was everybody suddenly having a problem with it?
She placated Nick and Lee by picking out things to take with her. In all honesty, Lee had packed pretty much everything she would want. Kassi did all this while still being determined not to go. They would just have to unpack her stuff when she won this battle.
At 12:30, Nick carried the additional bag to Lee's car. He came back in the house for Kassidy. He found her sitting in the living room on the couch. She was calm. too calm.
"Kass, it's time to go."
"OK. See you. Thanks for visiting."
He looked at Lee, who tried, "Kassi come on the plane is scheduled to leave in less than an hour."
"Fine. I'm not going."
"Yes you are," said Lee through clenched teeth.
Kassidy got an infuriating smirk and said sweetly, "no I'm not."
"Kassidy Rivers get your ass off the couch in the car now."
"No Lee."
Nick stood in front of her. She looked up and smiled sweetly. Suddenly she found herself over Nick's shoulder as he walked to the car. Lee locked up the house and ran to open the car door. Nick unceremoniously dumped her in the back seat and climbed in with her. Lee hopped in the front seat
and they were off with Kassidy yelling all the way.
At the airport, Kassidy thought she could still win. She refused to get out of the car when they pulled up to the curb. Nick reached in and pulled her out. Again he hoisted her over his shoulder, pulling his baseball cap down lower. She squirmed until he smacked her on the butt. She yelped then quieted down. Lee explained Kassidy had lost a bet and had to be carried through the airport on her boyfriend's shoulder. The porter laughed and helped her get the bags. Nick didn't sit her down until they had reached the gate. He left her with Lee while he got them checked in.
"Kassi you can be pissed I don't care."
"Thanks friend."
"Shut up. You know I'm your friend. We all are and you are going to Florida," snapped Lee.
"Fine. I'll go, but I'm not having fun. I'm going to stay in the guestroom and work."
"You better not send anything to your office in the first four weeks."
"Why," asked Kassidy.
"Lawrence said he will fire you."
"Fine."
Nick walked back over and asked Kassidy if she was capable of boarding the plane on her own two feet. She didn't answer until he moved to pick her up. She assured him she was able. The boarding call came. Kassidy did soften enough to thank Lee for staying with her. They hugged and then she boarded
the plane with Nick.
The flight to Tampa was silent. Nick didn't even attempt to have a conversation. He put on his Discman and pulled out a Gameboy, he'd never outgrow them. Kassidy looked in the carry on Lee had handed her. She found her Discman and some magazines. She put her headset on and flipped through the magazines. And so began the battle.
