"Got everything you need," asked Kassidy.
"Think so," replied Grace. "Let's go."
The two friends walked out of the hotel room and headed for the elevators. They were left alone the previous night and spent the time talking. They had talked almost daily for over a year, but never face to face. They got online for awhile to check in with their friends before going to sleep.
Today they were watching dress rehearsal. Backstreet had been rehearsing for the past three weeks in Orlando. This was the last two days to get everything set. Rounding the corner they spotted Nick and Billy waiting at the elevators. Grace and Kassidy exchanged a glance.
"Morning gentlemen," said Kassidy just before they reached the two men.
"Morning Kassidy," greeted Billy with a smile.
"Yeah morning," said Nick not turning around.
Kassidy said, "Nick we were not properly introduced yesterday, I'm Kassidy Rivers."
The hand suddenly appearing over his left shoulder surprised Nick. It took him a minute to realize this woman wanted to shake his hand. He turned to face her. He noted her firm grip. He also realized how small her hand Was in his. He looked into her eyes and saw friendliness. Despite his best intentions, he found himself speaking.
"I know who you are."
"Well good. It can't always be fun having everyone know your name and you have no clue who they are. I take it you met Grace yesterday."
"Yeah. Hi Grace."
"Hi Nick. Hi Billy."
"Morning Grace," replied Billy as the elevator doors opened. "Here we go folks."
Nick didn't even realize he was still holding Kassidy's hand until that moment. He quickly dropped it and stepped inside the elevator. As the doors were starting to close they heard a yell from down the hall. Kevin and his bodyguard, Carlos, ran into the elevator.
"Thanks man," said Carlos.
"Morning everyone," greeted Kevin.
"Morning," said Kassidy and the rest.
"Kassidy and Grace have you met my bodyguard, Carlos?"
"We have now," replied Kassidy with a smile. "Hey Carlos."
"Hey Kassidy, Grace."
"Hi," said Grace.
"Grace and Kassidy when the doors open walk straight to the van," said Carlos. "We will get the guys there after they sign some autographs."
"Got it," replied Kassidy.
The doors opened to screams. Grace and Kassidy hesitated for a moment, but felt hands on their backs giving them each a gentle push. They started walking. Kassidy glanced back at the entrance to see the four men stopped. Kevin and Nick were signing autographs. Grace and Kassidy walked out the door and started to get in the van, but were stopped when an unpleasant man grabbed Grace from behind.
"I don't think so" he growled, pushing Grace.
"We are suppose to get into this van," said a startled Grace.
"Yeah right," he said, again pushing her.
Kassidy stepped around her and said, "touch her again buddy and I will hurt you. Who are you anyway?"
"I'm the guy who is going to have you arrested."
"I don't think so."
"Hey what's holding us up," asked Kevin as he stepped out of the hotel with Nick, Billy, and Carlos right behind him.
"These two were trying to sneak into the van," replied the guy as he pushed Kassidy and Grace aside to make room for Kevin and Nick to get in the van.
"Carlos and Billy get these two out of here."
Billy said, "They are with us for the next two weeks. Now can everyone move into the van so we can get out of here?"
Kassidy shoved Tom's hand away from her. Grabbing Grace's hand she climbed into the van. The others moved past a stunned Tom and climbed inside. Tom recovered when Billy pulled the door shut. He got in the front with the driver.
As the van began to move, Kevin explained, "Tom, this is Grace Johnson and Kassidy Rivers. Grace is the contest winner and Kassidy is her chaperone. They are with us for the next two weeks. Since you flew up here yesterday to check out security you didn't meet them."
"No I didn't. And they weren't wearing their laminates," replied Tom.
"Trust me it will never happen again," said a still seething Kassidy.
"Good," replied Tom without looking back.
"Well isn't this fun," said Grace attempting to lighten the mood.
"Grace how did you win the contest," asked Kevin.
"Kassidy entered me."
"She did," replied Kevin.
"Yep. She submitted an article I had written for my school paper."
"So how long have you two known each other," asked Carlos.
"It's been just over a year. Right Grace?"
"Yeah. We met in Tommy's chatroom."
"When did you meet in person," asked Carlos.
"On Saturday when I flew to Springfield to meet Grace and her parents."
"You didn't know each other before this trip," asked Nick.
"We hadn't met face to face, but we talked online almost daily. She's like a little sister even though she's almost young enough to be my daughter."
"Wait how old are you," asked Kevin.
"I'm 30."
"Woah you don't look it," said Nick.
Kassidy laughed and said, "Thanks, I get that a lot."
"Grace how old are you," inquired Kevin.
"I'm 17."
"If you had waited another week she would have been 18 and not needed a chaperone."
"Your birthday is next week," asked Billy.
"Yes."
"This means we need to do something special for you," said Kevin.
"No you don't have to," interrupted Grace.
"Well we will see what's going on next week," said Kevin.
Before the discussion could continue the van pulled into the loading docks and everyone got out. Kassidy made a show of giving Grace her laminated and putting hers on as well. Tom scowled and led the way to the dressing rooms. AJ, Howie, and Brian had left in the first van and were already in the dressing room.
After the morning greetings the girls finally met Howie, who had flown in separately the day before. Everyone headed for the craft services room to get some breakfast. Grace and Kassidy met Fatima Robinson, the BSB choreographer, the dancers and the rest of the band at breakfast. They were all very nice. AJ invited Kassidy and Grace to use the Boys dressing room whenever they needed a break. For the time being, they followed everyone out into the arena to watch the first run through.
Grace and Kassidy both found it fun to watch them go through everything. First the guys warmed up and sang a couple of songs to work on the harmonies. Fatima was working with the dancers on another section of the five-sided stage. Finally they were ready to run through the show. The guys headed to a huge box at one end of the arena.
"I so want to do that," Kassidy whispered.
"What?"
"To fly."
"Insane," laughed Grace.
The entire run through was done with the house lights up. They stopped frequently to correct things. Finally they broke for lunch, and then it was an afternoon of dance and vocal rehearsals. Dinner was served then an actual full dress rehearsal took place. Fatima sat with Kassidy and Grace during this run through. She took notes to go over with the guys later. Everyone piled into the vans at 11:30 and headed back to the hotel. The first full day with Backstreet was over.
Chapter 5
Kassidy opened one eye and asked, "What time is it?"
"7:30. I'm running with Dennis, remember?"
"Oh yeah. I guess I should get up too."
"Why? You aren't running," said Grace.
"No, but I'm sure they have a weight room in this place. I can go be Hans and Frans and pump me up."
Grace laughed and said, "You do that. Be back later."
Kassidy pulled herself out of bed and got dressed. She called the front desk and found out the weight room was off the lobby, just past the pool area. Grabbing everything she needed, she headed down.
She walked in to find all five BSB and their respective bodyguards already there. She debated leaving when Kevin spotted her.
"Sup Kassidy. Come to workout with us?"
"I came to work out, didn't think about you guys being here."
"Well stay and let us show you what we he-men can do," said Brian striking a pose.
"Oh Brian! What a manly man you are," gushed Kassidy causing Brian to do more poses. "I can't take anymore. Lord knows what I might do."
"OK I will take it easy on you today. I forget new people have to get use to being around my manly self."
"Oh brother," laughed Howie.
"Took the words right out of my mouth," added Nick.
"Guys just go back to what you were doing. I will crank my CD and leave you guys alone."
"Are you listening to us," asked AJ.
"Ew No! NSYNC."
They all looked at her.
"Sike! I'm listening to Sound Garden this morning. Sorry."
"Sound Garden's cool," said Nick.
"Yep. Now I'll get to work," said Kassidy.
"Wait Kassidy," interrupted Kevin. "Where's Grace?"
"She's running with Dennis."
"Cool."
Kassidy put her headset on and started the CD. She sat down on the floor and started stretching. She was lost in her own world and didn't realize all the men in the room watching her. She had managed to stay pretty limber through out the years. Standing up she moved to the leg press. She set the weight and started moving through her work out. Everyone, but Kevin headed out when finished. He waited for Kassidy.
"Kevin why are you still here," asked Kassidy as she turned off her CD and pulled the headphones from her ears.
"I wanted to talk to you about Grace's birthday. How can we make it special for her?"
"I think anything you want do for her would be special. She celebrated early with her parents. Cards would be great."
"Come on it's her 18th birthday. It's a big deal. She will be an adult."
"Let me think about it and get back to you ok?"
"Sure. Shall we head up," he asked as they rounded the corner to the lobby. Luckily an elevator had just opened and they stepped on before someone saw him.
As the door closed, Kassidy joked, "Whew a clean get away!"
"Yep."
They went their separate ways when exiting the elevator. Kassidy stepped inside as Grace came out of the bathroom.
"Good you've showered. We've got 15 minutes. I will be out in ten," finished Kassidy, pulling stuff out of her suitcase.
"Okie. How was your work out," asked Grace as she brushed her hair.
"Crowded. Every Backstreet and his bodyguard was there."
"Wow and you stayed?"
"Kevin spotted me, so I couldn't leave. How was your run?"
"Very interesting. I will tell you later."
"Deal," replied Kassidy walking into the bathroom.
Fifteen minutes later found them on the band van heading to the arena. Dennis kept them entertained on the way. Once at the arena, Kassidy and Grace stored their stuff in the Boys dressing room and headed to craft services in search of something to munch on.
The guys arrived and went straight into dance rehearsal. Kassidy and Grace stayed in the dressing room.
"Anyway, Dennis said all the girlfriends, family and friends will arrive tonight and tomorrow."
"Interesting. Anything else?"
"Well," said Grace looking to make sure the door was still closed and lowered her voice. "Brian's fiancé gets in tonight. She’s doing something for her movie. Kevin's gets here tomorrow, then flies back out Thursday for LA. She's got the part of a dancer in some movie. Nick's girlfriend will be here tonight. She stayed in Orlando to finish recording some songs for an album. The parents and everyone else arrives tomorrow."
"You've done well Agent Grace," teased Kassidy. "What about Howie and AJ's girlfriends?"
"He said Howie and his girlfriend broke up before Christmas and apparently AJ's ended it when he went into rehearsals."
"You are good at gathering information."
"Why thank you," replied Grace as the door opened.
"Thanks for what," asked AJ, sitting on Grace.
"For the compliment. AJ you're all sweaty," exclaimed Grace. "Get off me!"
"But baby you know you like me all hot and sweaty."
"Oh yeah AJ, you've learned the secret," interrupted Kassidy. "Hot sweaty men."
"I know it darling."
"Try again," laughed Kassidy as AJ let out a yelp and stood up.
"Damn girl I can not believe you just pinched my ass."
"I asked you to get up and you didn't."
Kassidy gave Grace a high-five as everyone else laughed.
"Note to self, do what Grace tells me to do…sometimes."
"Don't your forget it McLean," retorted Grace.
"I see the shy one got over her shyness and has become sassy," commented Kevin.
"Maybe," replied Grace.
The vocal coach interrupted, rounding them up for voice rehearsal. This time they took Grace and Kassidy with them. The rest of the day went quickly. Too bad the night didn't go as fast.
Chapter 6
Grace was looking in her backpack for some gum she heard the dressing room door open. She glanced back to see a girl about her age.
"Security," yelled the girl. "Girl your ass is toast.
You better put back what you stole."
"I didn't steal anything."
"Yeah right. You happen to have one of my boyfriend's hats on."
"Oh you're Nick's girlfriend," started Grace.
A security guard appearing at the door asked, "What's wrong?"
Nick's girlfriend replied, "You let a fan back here and she's stealing stuff."
"Which way did she go," asked the security guard looking both ways down the hall.
"You idiot she's standing right there," said the girl, pointing at Grace.
"But she's been with them the past two days," stated the puzzled guard.
"I'm sorry we haven't met yet. I'm the Teen People magazine contest winner, Grace Johnson. I'm here to write an article for the magazine," said Grace.
The girl looked at her then stomped off, screaming "Nick!"
Grace and the security guard looked at each other then Grace followed the screams of the girl.
Kassidy glanced up, as the door to the rehearsal hall slammed open. A girl about Grace's age came storming in the room. Her hair was long, straight and dark brown. She was on the tall side, maybe 5'8. She walked over and poked Nick in the back. He turned and smiled at her. The smile quickly faded when he really looked at her. The music and everything stopped.
Nick greeted, "Hi Angie baby."
"Don't Angie baby me. Why is that girl wearing your hat?"
"Grace?"
"How many girls have you given your hats to Nick?"
"No one. Grace tried it on and I told her she could wear it."
"Hi Angie. Did you just get in," asked Howie.
"It's Angel now and yes I just got in."
"Well Angel," interrupted AJ over pronouncing her name. "As you can see we are in the middle of rehearsal."
Angel looked around and suddenly realized she was in the middle of approximately 20 people. She hugged Nick and whispered in his ear before taking a seat near him. Grace walked in the room as they started
Singing again. Angie's eyes shot daggers as she walked over to Kassidy. Grace quickly told her friend what had happened in the dressing room. Kassidy said the child needed an attitude adjustment and she would be more than happy to do it. Grace asked Kassidy to drop it.
After a final complete run through, they all piled into the vans and headed back to the hotel. They were going to have a small party to kick off the tour. Brian was met by his fiancée, Leighanne, at the hotel. Kassidy had to admit the woman was pretty. She seemed nice enough. She visibly relaxed when it was explained why Kassidy and Grace were there. Kassidy and Grace made fast friends with Tyke.
Everyone was gathered in a banquet room. They were making a fairly early night of it, because the crew had to be up early to do a final check of everything. Also the boys were doing interviews in the morning and a fan conference in the early afternoon.
Kassidy wandered out of the room to get some fresh air. She heard an argument. She thought she recognized the voices so she investigated. As she turned the corner leading from the lobby to the back elevators, Kassidy saw Nick and Angie.
"So have you fucked her yet?"
"Angie what are you talking about?"
"You heard me. She's been here two days and has your hat on. I didn't get to wear your hat for at least two months. Besides Nick it's a simple question. Have you fucked the bitch?"
"No he hasn't done anything with Grace, which is her name. Don't use anything else when referring to her."
"Who the hell are you and what are you doing in my business," retorted the girl.
"That's right we haven't met. I'm Kassidy Rivers, Grace's chaperone for this trip. And I'm in your business because you are yelling in a public place therefore making it public business. Also you are talking about a friend of mine and being ugly."
"Come on Angie lets make an appearance at this party then go up to the room for our own party."
"OK Nicky baby. I believe you. After all you would never be interested in a ska...I mean girl like Grace. She too young anyway."
Kassidy followed them back into the party. She watched Angie lead Nick around. She didn't like this girl. AJ stopped her observing by pulling her to the makeshift dance floor. They dance along with Grace and one of the tech guys. However, she did not miss Nick and Angie leaving the party and it made her ill.
Collecting Grace at midnight they headed for the room. Kassidy had a feeling the days were about to get longer. She also knew being nice to Angie would take a great deal of energy.
On the way back to the room they picked-up AJ and Marcus. AJ walked in their room and lay down on the closest bed.
Graced teased, "Make yourself comfy AJ."
"I think I will."
"Sure you tell him to get comfy, it's not your bed," stated Kassidy.
"Woohoo! I'm on an older woman's bed," crowed AJ.
"That's right Bone, but you're on it alone."
Grace looked at AJ's face and said, "Kassidy shoots, she scores and the boy is left stunned."
"No fair. You guys are ganging up on me."
"Poor baby. Look at him pout," retorted Kassidy as she turned to go into the bathroom, but jumped when she saw Marcus behind her. Everyone laughed.
"Kassidy I've been behind you all this time," said Marcus.
"Well next time don't be so quiet. Get your butt all the way in the room. I'm sure Grace would have no problem with you getting comfy on her bed."
Marcus crossed the room and sat on Grace's bed, saying, "Woohoo! I'm on the bed of a young one."
Sticking her head out of the bathroom, Kassidy cocked an eyebrow and said, "And you too shall remain alone on the bed."
Marcus chuckled, "Yes ma'am."
Kassidy walked out of the bathroom after changing into sweats and a T-shirt. They were talking about Angie.
"I'm just glad I don't have to guard Nick, but you didn't hear me say it," said Marcus.
Kassidy asked, "Is he worse than Boner?"
"Hey I resemble that remark," said AJ. "Actually, it's not Nicky. It's Angie. I'm sorry Angel."
"So everyone loves this brat I see," replied Kassidy.
"Brat is a good name for her," said Marcus with a chuckle.
"First of all Marcus, I know you are not going to light that cigar in this room. Second, I am probably her least favorite person."
Kassidy went on to explain about the incident by the back elevators. AJ and Marcus agreed that she had made an enemy. According to them so had Grace. Kassidy made it clear that Angie would be a very sorry little girl if she messed with Grace. At 1:30, Kassidy pushed the two guys out of the room.
