"Hello. I'm home," called Kassidy as she entered the condo.
"I'm in here," directed Grace from the piano she had borrowed from the Boys.
Kassidy dropped her briefcase and walked in the room asking, "So you writing a new song?"
"Yeah. I've had this idea in my head for a few days. Do you mind listening and telling me what you think?"
"Sure."
Kassidy listened to her young friend pour her heart into the song. There was no mistaking the song was about AJ. Grace had been moping since he left two days before for Florida. He was going to see his girlfriend, Melody. Things had not been going well with them. They weren't fighting, but Melody was using her work on the TV show as an excuse to pull away from AJ. The other guys were still in Nashville working on the album. They told AJ to take care of things so he could concentrate. They had two weeks to finish the album, because that's when rehearsals for the next tour were beginning. AJ was scheduled to return in three days, because Max Martin was flying in. Max usually never worked anywhere, but his studio in Stockholm. However, he said he had always wanted to visit Music City. Besides the record company was picking up the tab.
Grace finished the song and turned to Kassidy saying, "Well?"
"I think it's beautiful. Will AJ ever hear it?"
"Doubt it. He is too wrapped up in Melody. Anyway, why wreck a good friendship with my stupid crush?"
"Maybe AJ and Melody won't be together for much longer."
"Then he will be in rebound phase."
"You stay far away from him then."
Grace chuckled and agreed, "Promise."
"What do you want for dinner?"
"I don't care. Nick called just before you got home. He called to talk to you though he would never admit it."
"What makes you say that," asked Kassidy.
"Because he wouldn't ask specifically if you were here. Instead he asked what I was doing and was anything else going on. The general fishing for information."
"Why didn't he just ask?"
"Because he likes you and doesn't want anyone to know," replied Grace in matter of fact tone.
"What," exclaimed Kassidy. "No he doesn't. Why would he like me? I'm too old for him."
"Please you can't tell me you haven't noticed the way he watches you."
"Watches me?"
"Yeah if you are where he can see you, then he's watching you. Did you ever realize the guys always take a break when you come into the studio and Nick is working?"
"Now that you mention it, yes I guess they do. Why?"
"Because they know he won't focus until he's talked to you."
"You are lying."
"No I'm not. Ask AJ."
"No that's OK. I'm going to change. Be thinking about dinner."
As Kassidy was changing, the phone rang. Grace answered and it was AJ. He asked if she could get him at the airport. Grace borrowed Kassidy's car and was on her way. He sounded down. She wondered what happened in Florida.
She pulled up to the curb and instantly knew whatever happened was bad enough to make him start smoking again. He had quit after the Johnny No Name tour two months before. He put out the cigarette and climbed in tossing his bag in the backseat. He asked if they could go to Kassidy's. He wasn't ready to face the guys. Grace didn't push for information.
Once in the apartment, Kassidy greeted AJ with a hug. She had a feeling she knew what was up, but didn't pry. She took her keys from Grace and told them to behave and she would be back in a few.
"Kassidy didn't have to leave," said a dejected AJ as he sat on the couch.
Grace joined him saying, "I'm sure she had something to do. Now are you going to tell me what's wrong?"
"Why do you think something's wrong," he asked.
"Alex," said Grace in a chiding tone.
"Melody broke up with me."
"Oh AJ I'm sorry."
"Yeah well I should have seen it coming. She hadn't been calling. I get there and she didn't even come to pick me up. She sent her driver. I get to the set. She's in her trailer having a great time with a couple of her co-stars. I hang around and watch her work. When she's done she doesn't want to go home for quality time with me. She insists we go out with everyone. We finally get home and just go to sleep. She's not in the mood. This morning I find her out by the pool crying. She tells me she doesn't want to hurt me, but she can't pretend anymore. Pretend? I didn't know it was such a damn burden being with me! So we fight. She swears there is no one else. As crazy as it sounds, I believe her. She wants to focus on her career. I told her I could accept that, but she said she couldn't see us together in the future."
"Oh AJ."
"You know I didn't even realize until we walked back in the house that all her stuff was gone. She had already packed everything up and moved into her own place. She had gone by to check mail and stuff. Mom didn't even know she had moved."
"How is your mom?"
"She's pissed at Melody and worried about me. You know mom."
"Yeah. I'm surprised Denise didn't go after her."
"She thought about it, but I told her not to bother. Good thing I was looking to have the house redecorated. Melody helped me last time."
"I guess that is good," said Grace.
"I just can't believe I was so wrong about her. I really thought she loved me and wanted to be with me. I'm not going through that again."
"What do you mean?"
"I mean it's all strictly casual."
"Why?"
"That way no one gets hurt. So what have you been doing while I was gone?"
"Nothing much. Just hanging out."
"Cool. You know I could go for some food. Want to get something with me?"
"Let me call Kassidy and see what she had plan."
"Cool. I need to take a leak," he said as he headed to the bathroom.
Grace quickly dialed Kassidy's cell number and waited for her to answer.
"Hello."
"Kassidy, its Grace. I don't have much time. I don't want AJ to hear me.
He and Melody broke up. He wants to go to dinner."
"Go. Is he OK? Wait you can't go anywhere, you don't have a car."
"He's back to being Boner. I don't know about the car."
"Look I'll come back and give you guys the car."
"Thanks Kassidy."
"No problem. See you when I get there."
Kassidy arrived at the apartment and handed over the keys. Grace and AJ left. Kassidy stripped down to her T-shirt and settled in for the evening. The phone rang.
"Hello."
"Hey it's Kevin."
"Hey Kevin. What's up?"
"Is AJ there? Denise called looking for him. He doesn't have his cell turned on."
"He's not here right now. He and Grace went out to eat."
"OK. How did he seem?"
"Down, but all right."
"Good."
"If you talk to Denise again, tell her I will have him call when they get back."
"Thanks. So they left you there?"
"I figured I would give them a chance to talk. So where are you at?"
"Hotel. We called it a night. We're ready to head out to dinner. Want to come along?"
"Nah. Grace has my car. Thanks for the offer."
"You sure? What?"
"Huh?"
"Hang on Kassidy. What Nick? Yes I'm talking to her. No she doesn't want to come to dinner. What? Fine."
Kassidy heard the phone being passed off and then, "Kass come to dinner with us."
"I can't. Grace and AJ have my car."
"We'll come get you. Please," Nick pleaded.
For some unknown reason Kassidy said, "All right Carter."
"All right. Ow! Hang on Kevin wants the phone back. Bye Kass."
"Bye Nick," chuckled Kassidy.
"It's Kevin. We will see you in a few. Bye."
Kassidy threw on some jeans and tennis shoes. Nick came to the door. He looked cute in his standard outfit of baggy jeans, jersey, and baseball cap. He grabbed her hand and pulled her to the Expedition they were using. It was already full so Nick got back in and pulled her into his lap.
Kassidy found herself acutely aware of Nick's hands. One was lightly resting on her thigh and the other was resting low on her back. She was also aware of his reaction to her being in his lap. Both of them were glad he was wearing baggy jeans.
During dinner, Nick sat beside Kassidy and kept his leg pressed against hers. She found this amusing and exciting. As much as she hated to admit it, this kid got to her. She found herself, staring at his lips when he talked. She remembered how soft those lips were.
They took advantage of Grace not being there to plan her good-bye celebration. It was hard to believe she would be gone in a week. Kassidy was really going to miss having her around. Kassidy's car was at her place when they returned after dinner. Nick was visibly peeved when Kevin insisted he walk Kassidy to the door. He wanted to check on AJ and see if he needed a ride to the hotel. Kassidy said good night and walked with Kevin to the door. She never knew Nick's eyes didn't leave her until she closed the door.
Kevin and Kassidy found AJ and Grace snuggled up on the couch watching a movie. Kevin told him, Denise was looking for him. He said he would call. AJ declined Kevin's offer of a ride to the hotel. He said he just wasn't up to the third degree from the guys. He would explain it all the next day at the studio. Kevin said good night and left. Kassidy made AJ call his mom. After he had talked with Denise, Kassidy again told them to behave then went to bed. Grace and AJ watched the TV until they drifted off to sleep.
Chapter 20
"Surprise!!!"
Grace was shocked to see her friends gathered in the small party room. Kassidy had already surprised her once, by taking the day off to spend with Grace. Their first stop was the Pancake Pantry for breakfast then they went to the studio the boys were recording in. Kassidy engineered while Grace recorded the song she had written about AJ. They finished up just before the guys arrived, then hung out with them for a couple of hours. Kassidy then informed her they had an appointment to be pampered. The afternoon was spent getting a massage, manicure, pedicure and their hair done. Afterwards, it was back to Kassidy's to change clothes. They were going out to dinner.
"I can tell from your face you're surprised," commented Brian.
"Yeah," said Grace. "I'm going to miss everyone."
"Yeah, but you will miss me the most," said AJ.
"Actually I will miss you second most," teased Grace.
"Girl power," said Kassidy with a laugh.
"Fine," said AJ.
"Bone hang up the pouting," ordered Kassidy. "You know Nick does the pout thing better than anybody."
"I do not," said Nick as he's lip went out.
Kassidy reached in her purse for her compact. She held the mirror up to his face for him to see. A sheepish grin broke across his face. Kassidy stuck her tongue out at him.
"OK children," teased Grace. "Let's eat."
"A girl after my own heart," said Brian.
"Grace what time is your flight," asked Leighanne.
"9:55 in the morning."
"Why so early," asked Howie.
"Mom wants me home."
"Good reason," he replied.
The conversation continued throughout dinner. Grace couldn't believe she called all these people friends, but that's what they had become. She would miss them terribly when she went back to her life. Of course, she would focus on preparing for college. She was grateful to only have 5 weeks until she moved into the dorm. She loved her family, but she had come to love the freedom she had with Kassidy. It wasn't that she had run wild, but she also wasn't constantly under surveillance. Kassidy worked on the assumption of, I trust you until you mess up. It had never crossed either of their minds that she would mess up. It was a good way to transition into college.
Grace suppressed a giggle while she watched Nick and Kassidy. They were teasing each other. Nick kept reaching over to tickle or poke her. Any excuse to touch her. Grace was concerned about what was in store for them. Kassidy was much older than Nick, but they balanced each other. AJ had remarked earlier in the week that Nick seemed to be centered when Kassidy was around.
The thought of AJ brought an ache to Grace's heart. Since he had returned from Florida, they had spent so much time together. It had surprised her at first, because he had insisted he was going back to being Bone. However, he had yet to go out to clubs. He seemed content to hang around Kassidy's during his free time.
He had taken Grace to Opry Mills, a huge outlet mall. He bought her the dress she was wearing. Grace looked down at the dress. She had laughed so much, but modeled all the clothes he had chosen for her. He really wanted to get her leather pants and a tight fitting half shirt, but Grace made him realize she could never go home with it. One, her mother would have a fit and two, if she actually put it on her parents would discover her naval piercing. She had watched AJ go through racks of clothes. He would periodically pull something out and look at her then put it back. Finally, he had found the dress she was wearing. It was baby blue with daisies printed in a cluster on the lower left side of the skirt.
It was A-line and had thin straps. He had chosen some white sandals with daisies on them while she was putting on the dress. He declared it the right outfit. Grace should have known something was up when Kassidy insisted she wear it tonight. She had been clueless.
"Pooh you are being awful quiet," whispered AJ against her ear, causing a shiver to travel her spine.
"Just thinking."
"No more of that," he ordered. "So did you get your song recorded?"
"Uh...yeah. How did you know about the song?"
From the other side of her, Kevin said, "Kassidy asked if she could use the studio for an hour or so to record a new song you had written."
"Do you have it with you," inquired Kristen, who had come in for the weekend.
"I think Kassidy does," said Grace.
"I heard my name," said Kassidy from across the table.
"Yeah we want to hear Pooh's new song. She's says you have a copy," stated AJ.
Kassidy took one look at Grace's face and said, "I do, but we are in the middle of dinner and don't have a way to play it."
"What did you record it on to," asked Brian.
"We burned a CD."
"Great after dinner we will listen to it in the Expedition," replied Brian.
When everyone had gone back to their conversations and Howie had AJ's attention, Kevin whispered, "Grace, I'm the one who spilled the beans. Kassidy came to me about using the studio. I had to break down and tell AJ where you were this morning. He wanted to come get you and go to the studio early."
"Oh OK."
"Now smile your beautiful smile and cheer up."
Grace did smile at him. She now had to steel herself for when they heard her heart poured out for AJ. She was so scared this was going to screw up everything.
The meal was done and they all wandered out to the Expedition. Kevin instructed Kassidy to give his bodyguard, Carlos, her keys. He would bring her car to the hotel. They were not ready to say
good-bye to Grace just yet.
As soon as everyone was settled in the Expedition, AJ asked the driver to put in the CD of Grace's song. Everyone listened as the music filled the vehicle.
The song ended and everyone remained silent for a minute. Everyone knew this was Grace's song for AJ, without being told. Well everyone, but one.
"Pooh that's beautiful. Who is the jerk in the song," asked AJ.
Grace looked at him, stunned, but found her voice, "It's just about some people I know."
"Well good, cause I thought I would have to beat up the jerk."
Brian interrupted, "Grace that is really good. I like the melody. I tell you something, you have a talent for great melody."
"Bri's right and your voice sounds beautiful," added Leighanne.
"Thanks," replied Grace as they arrived at the hotel.
Everyone jumped out. Nick had watched Kassidy, who again sat in his lap on the ride. He had been happy to have her so close, but he watched her visibly tense up when AJ went stupid. He thought she might smack AJ in the back of the head for being so dense.
They all wandered into the bar of the hotel. It was empty. The hotel was redecorating half of its floors so occupancy was low, which was good for BSB. The bartender was happy to have some customers. Kevin wandered out to the grand piano at the entrance of the bar and started playing. Nick was still watching Kassidy.
"I need to show you something," he suddenly said.
"OK," said Kassidy.
"Come with me," he said taking her hand and leading her out of the bar.
"Where you guys going," asked Brian.
"We'll be back in a few," replied Nick.
He walked her past Kevin and Kristen to the back elevator. Neither spoke until they were in his room.
"All right Carter, why are we up here," asked Kassidy as she sat on the foot of his bed.
"I thought you needed to get away from AJ."
"Why?"
"Because you looked like you wanted to rip his head off when he didn't realize the song was about him."
"It was that obvious?"
"No, but you were sitting in my lap. You have good grip." He explained, "you gripped my hand really tight."
"Oh Nick I'm so sorry."
"It's fine, but that was a clue you were not happy."
"Well could he rip her heart out any better," she asked as she looked up at him.
Nick dropped to his knees in front of her and said, "I know it's hard for Grace, but he honestly doesn't have a clue. Besides do you think Grace really wants him to figure it out that way?"
"No," agreed a dejected Kassidy. "So now I have another young wise one around me."
"Nah. I just know how I would feel."
"Well you're right. Thanks Nicky...oops I mean Nick."
"It's OK for you to say it. Only when we're alone, but I like how you say it," he finished.
They looked at each other for a moment. Kassidy saw it coming, but could stop it no more than she could stop a spring breeze. Nick leaned forward and gently brushed her lips. He hesitated then pressed his lips against hers again. Instinctually, Kassidy's fingers found their way into his hair and his arms encircled her. Nick felt her lips part slightly and gently touched the tip of his tongue to hers. She deepened the kiss. Nick pulled her closer to him.
She was wearing a simple, sleeveless dress. It was a floral print that buttoned up the front and had a flowing skirt that stopped at her ankles. Nick had thought he would die when he saw her legs peek out from the skirt as she walked into the private party room. She had left it unbuttoned up to mid-thigh. He wanted to run his hands up her legs all night. Again he was glad for his baggy clothing, because throughout dinner he kept getting glimpses of her lace bra whenever she turned to speak to Leighanne, who was on her left. Nick had made sure he was sitting beside her. She had left the first two buttons open at the top of the dress. None of the other guys could see her bra and Leighanne wouldn't care. Nick was in the right place to see it when she moved.
As he kissed her now, he leaned her back slightly. He trailed kisses down her throat and followed the line of skin down her chest. He kissed down to where the bra started between her breast. He then nuzzled the dress open more and kissed the skin along the top of the lace covering her left breast. Her skin was so soft. His heart sped up when his name escaped her lips in a whispered moan.
Kassidy's mind had temporarily turned off. The only thing she did was feel Nick's sweet lips on her skin. She felt his mouth move back between her breast and he was now beginning to follow the same lacy path over her right breast. She was brought back to reality, when she wrapped a leg around Nick's back and pulled him closer causing him to moan.
"Nick," said Kassidy moving her leg from around him, trying to sit up.
"Don't pull away Kassidy," he pleaded.
"Nick we can't do this now."
"Why not," he asked in an agitated voice.
"Because we should be downstairs with everyone else. Someone will come looking for us soon."
"So!"
"So do you want to get any more into this and have to stop?"
Nick thought for a moment and said, "No."
"Let's go back to the party and we can talk about this later."
"OK."
"Now don't look so upset."
"It's just," he trailed off.
"I know."
"I'm sure it's not the same for you," he said dejectedly.
Kassidy made him sit so she looked directly into his eyes, before speaking, "Nick did you feel me react to what you were doing?"
"Yeah."
"Trust me Mr. Carter you know how to kiss and touch. Now let's go."
Nick had a huge grin when they stepped off the elevator. Leighanne was the first to see them. She quickly pulled Kassidy in the public bathroom before anyone else saw them. Nick was puzzled but just walked over to join the rest of his friends.
"What's wrong?"
Leighanne smiled and said, "You may want to button one more button."
"Oh my God," said Kassidy as she looked down to see that the third button at the top of her dress was undone. "Thanks Leighanne."
"Well you look more relaxed now and Nick sure is happy."
"We didn't."
"I figured as much, but something happened."
Kassidy looked at Leighanne and said, "Let's just say that boy has the softest lips. Am I horrible? I mean I'm so much older than him."
"I'm older than Brian. No you aren't terrible. I know this is hard but follow your heart."
"Oh sure tell me to do the scariest thing."
"It's not really when it's right. Now let's get out there and spend the rest of the evening celebrating with Grace."
"How is she?"
"She's better. Brian, Kevin and Howie have got her laughing and singing. I could just smack AJ up side the head for being so blind."
"I know."
They joined the rest of their friends. Everyone had fun singing. At 2am, everyone said good-bye to Grace. They all promised to check in on her at college. She also had an open invitation to visit all of them anytime.
AJ decided he was going home with them. He said he had to make sure his Pooh got on the plane safely in the morning.
Kassidy went to bed as soon as they got home. Grace and AJ stayed up all night talking. Neither wanted to waste their final few hours together sleeping. AJ helped her pack. He took great delight in packing her
lingerie. As the sun came up they sat down to watch the news while coffee brewed. AJ pulled her to him and hugged her tight. She looked up at him. AJ got lost in her blue eyes and didn't resist the urge to kiss her. He slowly traced her lips with his tongue. She sighed and he took the opportunity to gently slide his tongue inside her mouth. He teased her, but moaned when she gently sucked on his tongue. She hadn't expected that reaction. He had done it the one night they had gotten carried away on the couch. They seemed to always get carried away on Kassidy's couch. She broke the kiss when she heard Kassidy's door open. They went back to watching TV.
At the airport, both Kassidy and Grace fought the urge to cry. They hugged. They didn't need to promise to stay in touch, it was a given. Their friendship would last forever. AJ walked Grace to the jettison and
this time she did cry. He kissed the tears off her cheeks and promised to call her that night. He gently kissed her lips and she boarded the plane. She pulled herself together before she got off the plane and faced her parents.
