6. George Washington SWEET

Obituary 5/17/1945 Lampasas Record (p. 1)
Aged Man Died Here This Morning at 3:45
"After being in very poor health for several weeks and confined to his bed for several days, George Washington Sweet died at his home Thursday, May 17, at 3:45 a.m.
He was born in Bell County March 6, 1866, and had lived in Lampasas for many years. He was well known about town and was a faithful member of the Baptist church.
Survivors are his widow and several children and grandchildren, one son, Albert Sweet, is employed at Northington Implement Co.
Funeral services were held this afternoon at 5:00 at the family burying grounds near his home, conducted by the Rev. R.H. Mathison."

George W. Sweet married twice. First marriage: Fannie Spurlin in about 1889. She died about 1903. Children with Fannie Spurlin:

(1) Willie Sweet => died at Cameron about 1962. Born about 1890. Married Bessie Price at Cameron in 1919. In World War I.

(2) Emer (Sweet) => married Bud Reed and live at Lometa. Had 3 girls and 1 boy - Hardy Reed - lives at Galveston.

(3) Annie Sweet (a twin sister to Emer) => married Biddy and then Orms. Children of Annie - 2 girls.

(4) Elija Sweet => died at infancy.

(5) John Alberta Sweet => Born 1896, married Minnie Shelby Smith in 1924. She died in 1963. Children: Louis Albert Sweet-3 girls; Margaret Sweet O'Hair-married Rolla G. O'Hair, live in Lampasas; Glendora (Sweet) McClean-married Norris McClean. Lives in Austin; Gail (Sweet) Wolf-wife of Victor Wolf; Kenneth Sweet-married Pat Long. Lives in Louisiana.

(6) Mary Sweet => died in 1928. Married Walter Wesky (German). Then Mary married again and had 1 child by each marriage.

(7) Tom Sweet => married ? Murphy. Tom died in 1929 when he was living northeast of Dallas. Children of Tom Sweet: W.T. Sweet-now lives in Dallas; Tommie Sweet; a girl.

Second marriage: Julia Cook (Arnold) in about 1905.
Their children:

(1)Ellen Sweet-married Amos Gaddy. Lives in Lampasas.

(2)Lindy Sweet-married ? Smith. Lives in Oklahoma.

G.W. Sweet remarried in 1910 to Julia Anne Arnold.

First husband, Cook, passed away on August 24, 1908. Julia had a little 3-year old girl, Lois Cook (Mrs. Lee Murphree), the only one of her five children living with her. Her oldest son, Albert Sidney Cook, lived with and worked for friends near the Lampasas River. He went into the Navy during World War I and was lost on the ship MS CYCLOPPS in 1918, along with 293 other men. Another son, Allen Cook, went through major battles and came home safely. Her youngest son, William, was 33 years old when he died in Temple, where he lived.

Mrs. Geo. W. Sweet Rites on Wednesday
"Funeral services for Mrs. Geo. W. Sweet were held at Briggs-Gamel chapel Wednesday at 4:30 pm.., conducted by Rev. David Hunt, assisted by Bro. Rogers, pastor of the Bible Baptist Church.
Burial was in the family burying grounds 2 1/2 miles east of town on the Rumely road.
Born at San Marcos March 1, 1869, she was Julia Ann Arnold. She came with her parents to Burnet county when a girl and was first married to Wm. R. Cook. They moved to Lampasas, and he died in 1908. She was married again in 1910 to Geo. W. Sweet. He died in May , 1945. She had lived in Lampasas for more than 50 years and was a member of the Baptist church.
Mrs. Sweet had been ill since last September 27 when she suffered a stroke. She spent several weeks in the local hospital and some time in Dallas at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Lee Murphree. She had been there two weeks the last time when she passed away there at 4:20 a.m. Tuesday, Nov. 6.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Murphree of Dallas, Mrs. Amos Gaddy and Mrs. Fred Smith of Lampasas; one son, Allen E. Cook of Waco; two sisters, Mrs. Harry Murphy of Normanna and Miss Lecky Bell Arnold of Ausatin; 23 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; 10 step-children; and 40 step-grandchildren."
