Dubina, Texas

(Excerpt from ”Czech Settlements”, Part III, pg. 37-38)

Description of community DUBINA in Fayette Co., Texas, sent to us by postmaster Mr. Josef Peter: Community of Dubina is located west from Colorado River, 4miles from the railroad - station Weimar and 15 miles north from the country town of La Grange. Has its own Catholic church, rectory, convent, school, post office and a number of business facilities. In 1875 was founded the school, in 1877 the church and in 1886 the convent.

The first Moravians did settle on the banks of Navidad River on November 1, 1866. Most of them came from villages Ticha and Mysi by Frenstat in Moravia. The first Settlers were: Valentin Haidusek, Josef Peter, Mynek Muzny, Valentin Holub, Josef Sramek, Frant Marak, Josef Janda and Josef Kalik. When we came here, in the Texas wilderness, not knowing an other word but our native language, we had to overcome many bad problems. We settled on the deserted prairie by the Navidad River. It was a sad beginning; the money we brought along was day by day running shorter, but strong will and hope in the Lord’s help lessened our miserable position. For the meantime we built tents out of high grass growing wild here in Texas and later because of our hard work every one of us meneged to buy few acres of land. Because back in our homeland we were raised believe sincerely in God, we did not even here give up anything from our Catholic Faith and as best as we could we did our duty. There was not any priest far around only at the distance of 60-70 miles there was a French priest in Frelsburg, Colorado Co., who came 2-3 times a year and performed the services at the home of some farmer. There is no need to underline, that this priest suffered a lot, especially in the time of Civil War doing these trips. After a exchange of many spiritual administrators, was to us send Rev. Jeronim Legleder, a Bavarian, who still is here permanently and liked by the majority of parishioners. There is a shortage of Czech priests in Texas.

Nowadays are our veterans doing well; true enough we are sorry for the loss of those our fathers and mothers who left us for eternal rest. May Lord grant them eternal joy; their memory would not fade away.

The Post Office was established in 1885. The first Postmaster was Mr. Josef Peter and also his son Josef Peter is in charge of the office now. The name Dubina was given to us by our County Judge A. Haidusek. To our church belong about 600 families, most are Moravians and good Catholics.
