John F. Kaluza Sr., age 81 years and sixteen days, passed away June 4 at the youens Hospital in Weimar where he was taken several days earlier when he broke a hip in a fall at his home.
Funeral services were held from the Schwenke-Baumgarten Funeral Chapel June 7 at 9:30 a.m. with continued services at the Ammannsville Catholic Church at 10 a.m. Rev. Emil Wesselsky of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church in San Antonio, nephew of Mrs. Kaluza, was celebrant of the Requiem Mass and was assisted by Rev. Lambert Laskowski of Ammannsville. The members of the Ammannsville KJT, of which he was a member, marched in the funeral procession with their banners.
Mr. Kaluza was born on May 19, 1882 in Austria as the son of the late Frank and Francis Michalcik Kaluza. He emigrated to this country in 1887 and settled in the Holman area where he had lived his entire lifetime. On November 10, 1909, he was united in marriage to Annie Belcik at the St. John the Baptist Catholic Church at Ammannsville by the late Rev. Mahann. In his early life, he was active as a church and school trustee for the Ammannsville and Pecan schools. A devout member of the Ammannsville Catholic Church, he had been a retired farmer since 1957.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Annie Kaluza of Ammannsville; six daughters, Mrs. Edgar (Annie) Hollas of Victoria, Mrs. Julius (Martha) Berger of Schulenburg, Mrs. Julius (Alice) Ermis of Yoakum, Mrs. Fritz (Estelle) Pawelka of Lake Jackson, Mrs. Robert (Pauline) Trefny and Mrs. Edward (Gladys) Thurman of Houston; three sons, John V. Kaluza Jr. of East Bernard, Herbert Kaluza of La Grange and Melvin Kaluza of Houston; a sister, Mrs. Fred Rohan of Ammannsville; 30 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers were Raymond Koenig of El Campo, nephew; Adolph Anders of Houston, great nephew; Johnnie Demel and F.B. Christ of Houston, Johnnie Kaluza III of East Bernard, Julius Lee Berger of Schulenburg, Emil Kaluza Jr. and Paul Kaluza of La Grange, grandsons of the deceased. Altar boys were Julius Ermis of Yoakum, Frank Kaluza of East Bernard and David Schlamb of Shiner. Pallbearers by proxy were Henry Dove, seaman from Armona, CA and Bob Knade, overseas in France, grandsons-in-laws.
He was preceded in death by two sons, Edward Kaluza on April 30, 1947 and Emil Kaluza on January 9, 1962; a daughter, Mrs. Lillie Demek on June 9, 1962; a granddaughter, Denise Ann Pawelka on September 6, 1954; a son-in-law, Fritz Pawelka, on May 14, 1963; two sisters, Mrs. Katie Anders in 1962 and Mrs. Mary Bartosh in 1956 and two brothers, Peter Kaluza and Frank Kaluza in 1962.
