Life History of Vaclav & Theresa Urbish

Written by Justine Michna Keptra in April 18, 1967

Grandfather was born at Merdovy, Moravia, September 17, 1834. Grandmother was born at Myssim, Moravia, March 25, 1839. In the year 1870 (From research, I believe she meant the year 1860) Grandfather decided to part with his parents and served in the European Army for 9 years; afterwards, he decided to come to Texas where a lot of his friends already had settled.

He first came to the port of Galveston, Texas and then he journeyed to Dubina, Texas to stay with one of his friends, Valentine Holub. Grandmother followed him later with their two children. Theresa, who was 12 years old, and Frank, who was 3 years old. At Dubina they were blessed with the birth of their second daughter, Agnes, and 5 years later with the birth of their third daughter, whom they named Frances.

For the first 6 years they rented land around Dubina and Ammansville, then they bought a farm at Svetle. Later they bought more land and built themselves a rent house. From the year 1876, Grandfather and Grandmother were farming the land at Svetle with their children Frank, Agnes and Frances. Years quickly passed and before they knew it, all their children were married. Theresa, the oldest of the children, was married to John Dedek shortly after their arrival to America.

Agnes was married, before her brother Frank, to Florian Peter. In the year 1889, Frank married Miss Johanna Bezecny. Frances, in the summer of 1893 or 1894, married Henry Dedek (no relation with John Dedek, husband of Theresa). Theresa and John Dedek had 5 children: 2 sons and 3 daughters. Their names being Louis, John, Agnes, Amelie and Frances.

Agnes and Florian Peter had 7 children: 4 daughters and 3 sons. Their names being Annie, Mary, Agnes, Emilie, Charles, Raymond and one son died very shortly after he was born.

Johanna Bezecny and Frank Urbish were blessed with 13 children: 7 sons and 6 daughters. Their names being Frank, Henry, John, Fred, and George. The daughters names being Annie, Dolphina, Mary, Sophie, Olga and Leny. Two sons passed away in the year 1900, and they are buried at the Dubina Cemetery.

Frances and Henry Dedek had 11 children: 7 sons and 4 daughters. Their names being Stephen, Willie, Edmund, George, Jim, Freddie and Henry. The daughters are Finnie, Sylvie, Agnes and Sophie.

Theresa and John Dedek lived on their farm at Svetle until their death. Agnes and Florian Peter rented from her parents at Svetle, then they bought their farm at St. John’s.

Frank and Johanna Urbish rented till the year 1902, then they bought a farm at Hallettsville. In the year 1922, he sold this farm and bought another farm in St. Mary’s.

Frances and Henry Dedek also rented fom her parents at Svetle and Black-Jack. We do not know exactly in year they moved to (Thackerville, north of Gainesville, Texas) Oklahoma, but afterwards everyone lost contact with them.

It was in the year 1905 that Grandpa Urbish got very sick. Grandma did not know how to write but managed to let her son Frank know of his father’s illness and for him to come there. After Frank went to see his parents, he knew they needed help, so after he came home he told his oldest son, who was only 12 years old, that he had to go and stay with his grandparents and help them on the farm. Where Frank stayed with his grandparents (being only 12 years old), he knew how to read Czech, so he read the paper “Novy Domov” (New Home) for his Grandpa all about the war with Russia and Japan. Being that Grandpa was a soldier in the late 1870s (Again, meant to be 1860s), it was very interesting to Grandpa what was going on about the war. In this war, Grandpa remembered a Russian General named “Kuropatkyn” in which Grandpa had faith that he’d win the war. But Grandpa never did find out who won, as he passed away on August 17, 1905. After Grandpa died, Frank stayed with Grandma and helped her gather the crop. After that, Grandma sold the farm and moved to her daughter Agnes, who lived at St. John’s. Grandma died April 5, 1914 and was buried beside her husband at the Dubina Cemetery.

In the year 1938, Frank V. Urbish went to (Thackerville) Oklahoma and found out where Aunt Frances Dedek was living and visited with her for awhile. He got acquainted with her daughters, but never did meet her sons, at the time.

In the year 1942, Fred Urbish and his wife Elizabeth went on a trip to Oklahoma and visited with Aunt Frances and all her children. Then in 1954 Olga Matula and her husband Sidney drove to Oklahoma and visited with Aunt Frances and all her children.
