This is the initial cut for the fwd access hatch. The cut measures 10" x 19", for a final access area of 9" x 18".
Here is the piece that was cut from the fwd fuselage cover. I used this piece to create the access door cause it was already the right size and curvature.
This is the same piece, adding foam to radius the glass to glass edge.
This is the semi-finished access hole on the fuselage. The lip is done, but final finishing / fitting remains
The hinges for the fwd hatch. Initially I was going to use small mount plates similar to those on the canopy hinges, but reason took over and I had a better idea...(next picture)
I thought about the inserts used in honeycomb panel construction, and thought "DUH!" I had some 10-32 threaded inserts that are used in furniture construction. hese little beauties have a 10-32 threaded hole, and big, honkin wood threads on the outside. I marked the location of the hinge mount bolts on the door and the fuselage cover, drilled the holes to fit the inserts, (I left the hole in the glass just big enough to thread the insert through, but hollowed out the foam considerably) and wet-floxed them into place. The end result was just great, with very little weight and very little effort.
The little door actually works!
Another view of the same thing.
