Fidel vs. Fidel
Many College Station residents are far too familiar with the story of Fidel, the relatively new advisor to the biomed department. Great fanfare greeted him as he arrived in 1999. Many put their hopes in Fidel for a complete, Communism-themed revamp of the BMEN program. While scores of his initiatives came to fruition, a powerful revolutionist showed up on the scene none too soon. Maria ("Che") came in the Fall of 2000, just in time to stop Fidel from implementing a 165 hour degree plan. Citing Ghandi and Enya as her primary sources of peaceful inspiration, Maria participated in several forms of protest to express her dissent of Fidel's autocracy. When sit-ins, picket lines, and an acoustic version of "Where Have all the Flowers Gone?" proved too passive a protest, she rallied the oppressed students for her most effective, and final statement: she began to schedule great numbers of walk-in hours every week. The students took advantage of these hours and soon, Fidel no longer had time to meddle in scheduling and course requirements. Maria slowly returned the department to its previous state and Fidel lost the inordinate amount of power he had mysteriously gained in 1999. He also gained a bit of narcolepsy. Gracias, Maria. |
