What happens when 4 college girls, 4 backpacks, and a CPU get in a tiny nissan and drive halfway across the country to explore the deepest hole on the continent? A great trip is what. During spring break of 2002, we set off for the great hole at 6am. This particular picture is just before we hit the trail.

A view from the rim... | It was 15 degrees our second night on the rim. We camped there first, then set off for the bottom the next day |
We obtained a backcountry permit very early on Saturday morning. A group in front of us was denied, but we made it through with exactly what we wanted! It's a good idea to reserve your permit way ahead of time, as much as 4 months. They reserve a few for walk-ups and, luckily, we got one. |
We hiked down on the South Kaibab trail. It was pretty steep and about 7.1mi to Bright Angel Campground where we stayed. The elevation change was 4,642ft and it took us about 6hrs (there was a lot of playing around).
we encountered some frenchmen on the trail and they took this pic for us. the only french I knew was 'je sui un pom de terre' (I am a potato) |
