The Lost Coast is about 3 hrs north of San Francisco. We hiked the stretch of coastline just north of Shelter Cove. The area is in the King Mountain Range and also has a lot of public land managed by the Bureau of Land Management.
Cooking breakfast in the morning. We were dismayed that no bears had messed with our food store (safely away from the tent!) overnight.
We hiked about 16mi in over two days, then turned around and hiked 16mi out in one day. Check out the terrain; if it wasn't ankle-destructive mini-boulders, it was soft sand that you sink in with each step. I found this trip to be at least as strenuous as the Grand Canyon. Maybe even more so.
This is an area called the Big Flat.
Apparently, surfers somehow make it out here, it's about 8mi in.
Hiking off of the Big Flat and on to the wild!
some ocean shots...
if you look close enough, you can just barely see Japan...
as we were leaving...byebye treacherous coastline!
