NETXQRP April 2001 Meeting
We had another great meeting and feed at John Y Miguel's on April 21. We welcomed one of our newest members, Karl Kanalz, W8TIF (Texas Is Fine) of McKinney. A big WELCOME to him!!
The Belton Hamfest was also on this weekend and our attendance list showed it! Apparently some of our members felt a need for their presence in Belton rather than Terrell. Man, you guy's and gal's need to get your priorities straight! :^) We had a good time anyway 'cuz our Grand Pooh-Bah, Chuck, W5USJ, brought all of his Arkiecon booty for show and tell. Chuck won the grand prize, a Yaesu FT-817 all band/all mode QRP transceiver with an MP-1 portable antenna and all sorts of other good stuff! Not only that but he and his bride Margie celebrated their anniversary in Ft. Smith that same weekend. Now thats what I call a BIG WINNER!
All in all we had 6 members present.
- #1 Chuck, W5USJ
- #3 Don, K5DW
- #6 George, W5YR
- #2 Bill, K5JHP
- #7 Dwain, KØLOA
- #22 Karl, W8TIF
Here's the April crop of members (missing Dwain, K0LOA, of course, who was behind the camera.)
L to R: George (W5YR), Chuck (W5USJ), Bill (K5JHP), Karl (W8TIF), and Don (K5DW)
Here's Bill, K5JHP, (L) talking to our newest member Karl, W8TIF.
No doubt explaining the endless intricacies of our club's officer structure. ;^)
Dwain, K0LOA, helps Chuck, W5USJ, set up the Grand Prize station.
Dwain spreads the radials for the MP-1.
....and in the process, proves that standing waves do actually exist on radials!
The FT-817 and the base of the portable MP-1 antenna. Neat Stuff!
If you look real close you can see something at the end of the black wire coming from the back of the 817.
Care to guess what it is?
It is the Dennis Foster, KK5PY, version of a TE NE KE Micro Keyer Paddle!!
And this little jewel really works!
Chuck, W5USJ, shows off this 1:1 balun he built according to one of Jerry Sevick's designs.
Which George, W5YR, immediately checked with his trusty AEA Analyzer.
Virtually flat from audio to light!....well, would you believe from 3MHz to 52MHz?
Chuck also showed off his homebrew tilt-support for the FT-817.
As you can see, it's extremely functional and easy to build.
Don, K5DW, George, W5YR, and Karl, W8TIF test HF radiation absorption from the MP-1....
...proving that radiation does cause hair loss!
Chuck, W5USJ, and Bill, K5JHP check the map to Chuck's place.
...where the club's QRPTTF effort will be held.
Bill, K5JHP, Karl, W8TIF, and Dwain, K0LOA relax after filling up on
QRP, fellowship, salsa, and coffee!
And that wraps up another great meeting. We'd love to have you visit anytime you're in the area. The front page of our website, www.netxqrp.org
