"Sugar...Spice...and Everything Nice. These were the ingredients chosen to create the perfect little girls. But Professor Utonium accidentally added an extra ingredient - Chemical X! Thus, The Powerpuff Girls were born! Using their ultra-super powers, BLOSSOM,
BUBBLES, and BUTTERCUP have dedicated their lives to fighting crime and the forces of evil!"
You probably recognize that as the intro to every episode of The Powerpuff Girls. But that's not the whole story, and very few people really DO know the whole story behind the creation of those super-cuties we all know and love.
Two words...Craig McCracken. What can I say, the guy's a genius! Just a 30-year-old guy from California, he only wanted to draw something cute.
While studying character animation at the California Institute of the Arts, Craig made a short film about three little girls...superheroes, as a matter of fact. Back then though, they were the Whoopass Girls. A few years later, he started working on Dexter's Laboratory for the folks at Hanna-Barbera. He heard they were looking for ideas for a new series, and he submitted his short, Whoopass Stew, starring our Girls. Needless to say, the big guys loved it! They agreed to run his series, but on one condition; the name had to go. They weren't going to run a children's show called "Whoopass Stew." What did you expect? So a little bit of Whoopass became a whole lotta Powerpuff, and the rest, as they say, is history.
