Christmas 2004

Christmas was a little more special this year in Brownsville, Texas. In case you didnt hear, it snowed for the first time in over a hundred years! The last recorded snowfall in Brownsville was in the year 1895. Most of us down here in South Texas had never experienced snow before so this was a magical experience for us all. Our city newspaper has kept an online photo album of pictures submitted by residents enjoying the snow.

Christmas Eve was kinda freaky bc the rain was turning into ice and the ice was applying itself thick to anything it landed on especially cars and the expressway. Around midnight Jackie called to inform me that it had begun snowing outside so I quickly bundled myself up and went to investigate. There was some evident snow dusting but nothing prepared me for what I saw the next time I awoke.

Jackie called me at 2am letting me know that there was even more snow and that I should take pictures so once again I bundled myself up and grabbed my camera. I woke my mother and my cat to venture with me onto the balcony and sure enough, snow was falling and most of the complex was covered with a blanket of white snow.

The following pics were taken at 2:30am on Christmas morning:

After taking those pictures I decided to set my alarm at 7:15am so that I could take some more pictures before the snow melted. I woke up before my alarm went off, conversed with my father about the miracle and then bundled up to venture out into the snow. My mom went outside with me but lasted a mere 5 minutes in the cold so she left me to explore by myself. Annoying but funny thing is that I didnt have any fresh batteries for my digital camera so I kept having to switch batteries almost every picture. I was rotating between 8 batteries so needeless to say I was a bit fustrated having to fix the date on every pic. After a while I got tired and left the date as is which came out 1/01/2003 so excuse the date, haha

Christmas 2004 seemed almost like a magical dream bc the next day our temps were back to normal. The snow was a miracle landing on Christmas and is definetely one of those stories I will tell my grandkids about.
