Welcome to this month’s issue of Survivor Haven.

“A mother’s heart is a special place, where children have a home.” The artwork above has a wonderful sentiment and for many, it is true. Unfortunately for just as many, it isn’t.

With the thought of Valentine’s Day came the thought of love so it is with great pleasure we offer this as the theme this month. While the love between life partners can be a wonderful thing, it does sometimes go horribly wrong. Emotional, verbal and physical abuse that is all too often accepted as part of a “loving” relationship. It isn’t though. Those traits aren’t love they are abuse.

While Valentine’s Day is usually considered a time to celebrate the love between lovers, at Survivor Haven we didn’t want to limit ourselves to only that type of love. You will find this month that we have showcased the love of parents for their children and the love of adult children towards their parents. Be prepared though. Not all love has a happy ever after ending.

Some may find the discussion of all this "love" uncomfortable. Experience has taught some of us that love can be both emotionally and physically painful. Lessons on the instability and untrustworthiness of it have been hard learned. That type of love isn’t true love and each of us must fight our own demons to rid ourselves of these perceptions. True love is unconditional. It is steadfast, supportive and protective. It isn’t angry words, wild accusations or clenched fists. A survivor learning to love has a hard road to travel. A survivor learning to love him or herself, has an even harder one for to find true healing, we must first learn to love ourselves.
