A few days ago I decided to stop by our local bookstore and look around. I had a specific book in mind, “A Child Called It” (see link below) as well as a few others I had heard about that dealt with various forms of child abuse. This store isn’t a small, mom and pop type of bookstore but one of a national chain and as I reached the self-help/recovery section, my heart sank at the poor selection they offered.I was able to find the one book I was looking for but the selection for abused children, especially sexually abused children was virtually nonexistent. While I wouldn’t hesitate about requesting a special order of a book dealing with the recovery of child sexual abuse or rape, many survivors would. I remember the first time I purchased a copy of “The Courage to Heal.” It was during the early days of my therapy and active recovery and the shame I felt about having to go to the desk to ask a male associate if they had it in stock, then explain what type of book it was so he would know what section to search in, then to special order the book was a humiliating experience. One I wouldn’t want any other survivor of rape or abuse to have to go through.
With that experience in mind, I have set up a library for visitors of Survivor Haven with direct product links to Amazon.com. This library has a two-fold purpose. The first and foremost is to save the survivor possible embarrassment over his or her purchase dealing with what many consider shameful subjects. The second purpose is to try and generate a small amount of income for Survivor Haven so our many fine contributors could begin being paid for their work.
To date, volunteers who feel strongly about the message we are trying to send out have produced Survivor Haven and while I plan on continuing my volunteer work, I would like to be able to compensate the authors in some way. If you have found Survivor Haven, its message or the work contained to be helpful and plan on buying any of the items featured in the near future, please support us by using these links to make your purchases.
