November means many things to different people but to most Americans, it means Thanksgiving. Most churches will begin preaching about what we each should be thankful for.

Thinking back to my childhood I remember all the things I was told I should be thankful for. As an adult who has lived through child abuse, rape and emotional abuse by a very insecure, immature man that I was immature enough myself to marry, I see I have a completely different idea of what I should be thankful for.

I can’t help but laugh when one of the things I am thankful for is that very same ex-husband that if I had never married, I would have never met the people who would one day be my mother and father in laws.

Christianity teaches us to forgive, forget and be thankful for the supposed peace such actions may bring and I am sure many survivors actually feel that way. On the other hand, not all survivors are of the Christian faith, believe forgiveness is not the cure to all ills nor do they want to forget. After all, history forgotten is often history repeated.

This month’s issue focuses on the things survivors are thankful for. Some of the following pieces will make you smile; perhaps cry and others may even shock you. As you read these, try to remember that each person’s path towards healing is his or her own. Regardless of the “steps” a particular book may suggest, only the survivor can decide if they are the right ones.

May each of you reading this month’s issue find peace and thankfulness in your own way, along your own chosen path. As a dear friend and Survivor Haven contributor (Carol Huber) would say, ”Bright Blessings” to you all.
