Not the best in the series, but good nevertheless: 7

This version of Castlevania was never released here in the States. There was a knock off SNES version that did make here, which I thought was decent at best, but still didn't capture the true essense of the PC engine version. Well I was able to obtain a copy of the game and can safely say while it not may be the best in the series it ranks as one of the better titles in the totem pole.

I really don't know anything about the actual story since it was entirely in Japanese. There were plenty of cinematics involved, though, that are part of what was probably a good story. In fact the beginning scene was one with a young lady/girl who was being sacraficed or killed, for what I am guessing, to wake of the Count.

Thats about all I can really describe. The game is the same as the others meaning you jump and whip your way through the end. The stages are well designed, although there are many familiar areas that we have seen before or at least the fans of the series, and long. More bang for your buck I say. Anyway I did not notice a save feature so I am guessing it saved it automatically since it would be nearly impossible to beat this game in one sitting. The gothic atmosphere and the music do a great job of setting the mood. I also like the fact that after beating the game you can play again using Maria who attacks and moves differently than the original hero.

The only gripes I have are the fact that the stages amy be too long. I really expect most gamers to spend around 30 minuites a stage. That is way too long in my opinion. However what may make it take so long is the fact that the characters on screen move at a very slow pace. This game really could have used a dash feature.

Overall the game is a nice title to add to your collection, but I would not pay too much for it. It ok but nothing spectacular. Don't get ripped and pay too much. The newer titles are way better anyways.
