First of all Castlevania SOTN is my all time favorite from this series. However, this is the game that spawned many offspring and ranks as one of the best. Castlevania set the gaming world on fire when it first came out. And it should have. This game is packed with so much old school 2D platforming goodness that I couldn't help but give it a good score.
The controls are simple. Jump and attack. Up and attack allows you to use items picked up throughout each level. The controller is pretty responsive and the stages are a almost perfect size. Not too short and not too long. It falls in the just right department. The music is great and some of the best on any NES cartridge, as it matches the whole gothic feel of the game. I like the difficulty since it starts off easy, but slowly rises to the point of wanting to shut the thing off because of the cheapness of either the stage or enemy.
The only drawback I could think of are that the graphics suck a little and sometimes hides the enemies. Also the difficulty may deter some gamers since there is a lot of jumping to be done and the hero is not exactly qualifying for the olympics. Also the bosses look dumb and robotic at times.
Overall the game rocks. It plays great and you should have fun playing this title. It is every bit of fun now as it was years ago. I recommend that you snatch this gem up and add it to the library of NES cartridges.
