Scary as hell? Well a bit: 8

"Scary as hell" was one of the descriptions that I heard about the game and one of the driving forces behind my purchase of the game. What I expected was an intense knock your socks off, Doom 3 horrorfest. What I got was pretty close to what I had in mind.

The graphics are OK. As is one of the major problems of many FPS's, the environments do get a bit repititive. This is such a shame given the great setting this game has. Some of the bosses are just make your jaw drop because of the design. I remember seeing the final boss for the first time and thinking "Damn. I have to fight this thing? Where the hell do I begin?". As for the rest of the enemy models? Well not so inspiring. There are only a few different types of enemies during the first half of the game. As you upgrade your weapons and armor the game pulls the old pallete swap trick and makes darker, stronger versions of the enemies. A big no-no in this day in age. There is a powerful machine at your disposal folks, push it to the max and get some variety here.

The story is a bit like any other space horror. You are sent to investigate a spaceship colony on some planet. When your team gets there something is obviously wrong and your team gets massacred leaving you and two others seperated and trying to find a way off the colony. Yes it could use some spice, but there are a couple of plot twists to keep things a bit fresh.

This is a FPS so gameplay should not be too hard to imagine. Enemies leave cash behind that you can upgrade weapons and armor with. I personally only used one weapon throughout the game. It would have been nice to have the others implemented in certain situations. One genious move this game employed was the light trail. Lost, just click the joystick and a trail lights up the ground. Just follow to get to the next objective.

This game has a lot of things that could be improved on, but also does certain things brilliantly. The light trail, minimal backtracking, and a limit on silly puzzles really help this game from sinking to the mediocre category. A solid playthrough anyday.
