Developed by Camelot, the same cats who made Mario Golf, they somehow found a way to make a entertaining game out of an unentertaining sport (IMO) that even had me hooked for a bit. Mario Tennis is your basic tennis game with that classic Mario style twist.
Gameplay-This is a game that can be played by newbies and vets alike. Controls are simple and movement with the analog is smooth and responsive-a must for a tennis game. The concept is simple-a tennis game with matches. The thing that makes this game shine is the variety of characters and modes. There are lots of characters from the Nintendo universe, some new and some old. Each has their style of play that makes the game more variable. The extra modes add variety to the normal mode-Ring shot and Bowser. Ring shot is like a normal match where rings are placed throughout the court-you set a point limit-50, 100,etc.-and you get points by hitting the ball through a ring. You actually get the points after you score on your opponent. An unusally long battle can net in excess of 30 points-that is all the fun-see who will mess up first. Bowser mode is like a normal match except items can be used. Items are from mario kart and do the exact same things on this game. This mode is my favorite out of the three. Gameplay is by far the best area as the concept was original and innovative.
GFX and sound-The graphics are pretty identical to Mario Golf and that should paint a decent picture. Colors are bright with a little of a pastel flair to them. Voices are present and done well for cartridge format though I must say that Luigi sounds like Luigi from mario Kart with low batteries. Sounds are nice and loud, and music is what you'd expect from a nintendo game.
Funfactor-This game is fun for a while, you can play with buddies for a while, get tired, and play again and again. However, if you abhor tennis games in general, avoid this game as it will do little to change your opinion. I thought it was some fun at least.
Replay-Like aforementioned, this game can be played over and over again like the other mario games. Its fun and addicting once you get in a groove. However, I recommend this game to be played with others to get max fun and replay out of this. A great game for a get together.
Overall-Camelot had a good concept, made it into a game, and took it one step further than other tennis games. A great game that will satsify most.-Joel-
