The graphics are nice, except on the overworld, where a 16X16 pixelated verison of the hero moves around at a slow rate of speed with little animation. The map is pretty stale, but it doesn't detract too much. Most of the maps were designed with a anime flair, but the character art is a conglomerate of differing styles.
Character development is not too much because of the following: there are 108! allies in the game. Most of the central ones are well developed, but some others are more or less just there. Still, they managed to do a decent job there.
Battles are fought on a 3/4 view like the BOF series, and there is some meat there. You can have link techs like Chrono Trigger with up to everyone in the party. Magic links also exist, but with great rarity. Another type of battle is one on one with a general, duel style. You select a command, and the turn plays out. Not much to see, but it is original. Perhaps the best type is the large scale army battles where you choose a battalion to go attack the enemy from a side to side view. Seeing one brings memories of the Romance of the Three Kingdoms series.
Sounds and music are decent with a few nice tunes and a few generic tunes. The magic and weapon systems are pretty easy to get a hang of. Magic is acquired by buying/finding runes and equipping it on a character. Some characters can use only some runes. Weapons become stronger by forging them, but in order to max out their power, you have to find all the smiths around the world.
Overall, this game will keep you intrested for a while, it is not exactly a Square game, but there is much worse out there, trust me. (Quest 64) -Joel-
