Vandal hearts is a solid strategy game that set the stage for future strategy games like tactics ogre and FFT. This was the predecessor. The gameplay is a battle fought in turns ,you getting to advance your party or attack if your range is close enough. The enemy will counter attack if not killed . Then the enemy has its turn to advance and attack. You also counter attack if not killed. The game is over if Ash ,the main character, is killed.
There are many diffrent classes of troops but mianly follow one of the three major classes, swordsmen, hawkmen, and bowmen. The formula to winning is bowmen take more damage from swordmen but inflict more on hawkmen, hawkmen inflict more damage on swords men but are weak to archers, while swordsmen are susceptible to hawkmen while strong against archers. Also attacking from behind or the sides inflicts more damage.
Thats enough tactics. The sounds are great as you hear crunching slashes of the swords and other battle sound. The graphics are colorful with a simple design. The characters all have storylines of their own that gives each of them their own personality. The music is okay, some of it sounds too monotone for a battle, with some of it fitting the battle area perfectly.
This game is very addictive when you find yourself playing for about 3 hours straight. It is the first game I did not want to end, while the ending made me want to go back in time and change the future. There are 7 side maps, or keys, to do . I think there might be 2 endings. I hope so for the sake of a happier ending that you recieve one when you get all 7 keys. I enjoyed this more than tactics ogre, but have not yet played FFT, which I will play tomorrow.
Again this is a great game which is very cheap by now, $10 at a local blockbuster almost 2 years ago. Just pick this game up and enjoy what its world has to offer, as you will be consumed by it . I know I was.
