In Memory of Jesse Gray

In memory of Jesse Payne Gray, who died at 12:05 a.m. Feb 10th, 1918, at
Camp MacArthur, Waco, Texas, the cause of his death was pneumonia.  He was
born Sept. 27, 1888, was 29 years and 5 months old and was buried in the
Clyde Cemetery, Feb. 13, 1918.  He joined the Baptist Church in Oplin some
10 years ago.  Joined the Army and was assigned to the 37th Recruit Squadron
3rd Provisional regiment and Captain William H. Sanborn writes these words
of commendation:  "During his short stay in the Army, Private Gray performed
his duties as a soldier, in the most willing and competent manner.  He was
liked by all his fellow soldiers; and his character was excellent."  He left
a policy of $5,000.00 to his sister, Mrs. Amanda Ellis to whom he was very
much attached, having spent most of his boyhood in her home.  It was my
privilege to baptize him and serve as his pastor what time he remained in
this part of the country:   Jesus says "Greater love than this has no man,
than for a man to lay down his life for his friends."
His Pastor
R. H. Williams
