Reviews: The Kovenant (ex-covenant)
Black Metal, Goth/Industrial Metal
Animatronic - 1999
Okay first off let us shake a few things off, this band’s first release, “Nexus Polaris,” and the band members other projects have all been black metal, and this album is not black metal, although some influences can be heard such as both the male and female vocals, the Satanism, and a few of the synth parts. This album is more of a goth/industrial metal album, and for this shift in style, they have been labeled…guess what….sellouts! But they’re playing what they want and who is to say what kind of music they HAVE to play! This album is just plain good, the songs have a great beat, they’re catchy as hell and the lyrics are quite good considering their departure from the poetry of black metal (maybe because they are able to concentrate more on the content). I personally loved this album, but I would not recommend the album to a death/black metal head, but I would to a goth or rivethead who is open minded and willing to accept the guitar solos, Satanism, and extreme vocals. I can’t wait for their next album, because the problem with this album I believe is that they are not yet accustomed to their new found musical style, and the music really is quite simple (the guitar is simple power chord riffs except of course for the solos and such), they have not yet reached the heights their talents can take them!
