General Information about Garland Independent School District
and the Transportation Department

The population of Garland, Texas is approximately 220,800 (per census est. by dfwinfo.com) and is comprised of a school district made up of 63 schools! Seven are High Schools, 13 are Middle Schools and 43 are Elementary Schools. The GISD is comprised of the cities of Garland, Rowlett, and Sachse.



POTPOURRI of Fun FACTS:


GISD transportation assets carry about 15,000 students to/from school each day.

In 1978 GISD had 43 Buses; in 2002 the Bus count now exceeds 240.

The 240 units travel over 3.25 million miles each school year covering 161 regular routes, 50 special education routes, 30 midday routes, 75 (estimated) extended day routes, and on average servicing between 7,500 & 8,000 field trips per year.

GISD is the 11th largest school system in Texas.

In 1961, GISD spent $257 per student/per year. Today GISD spends $4754 per student/per year.

From 1985 to today, GISD went from 35,000 students to 52,000...an increase of 48.6% (but who's counting?)

There are over 12,000 computers in GISD's core labs, with at least one computer in each of the 2,600 district's classrooms.

The number of internet connections now exceeds 13,000 in GISD.
