Some times when they are cutting down a tree they will stop to eat it!. and some very brave beavers will try to sneak up on one of the other beavers, while they are cutting the tree down and take a little bite out of it! where the one cutting the tree can not see them. and then they run before they are seen!! ( if you took food from you're dad you would run also!). Doing the winter the beavers have a neat way of storing their food, since it is tree limbs and branches and leaves.! They have to kept them cold and still be able to eat them.? since they can not get out from under the ice in the winter they dig a hole in the bottom of the pond!. and start filling it up with the tree limbs!! this way when they are in the house they can swim out to the pile and cut some off and take it back inside to eat!. ( I thought you knew that they build houses out in the middle of the pond they make with their dams? ) They make the doors to their house under water so that the mean old bob cat or mountain lion can not get to them. That is real smart i think. they can also stay under the water for 12 to 15 minutes. which is why when you scare one and it goes in the water you will not see it again for you will get tired of waiting for it to come out. Then you will go away just like the mountain lion does. But beavers are not really mean they are layed back and calm and they will even make friends with you if you are nice to them. But that has some real bad stuff that can happen. Like if you make them a pet you can get them in the house but then they will chew up all the wood legs on the tables and make dams in the house by laying the chewed up legs between the chairs. So I think it would be best not to have them as a pet. or mom would get really mad at you and make you go to sleep without you're supper! Just because the Indians use to have them as pets does not mean you can. for the indians lived outside in tents! The Dams that they build help clean the water in the streams so it is best to leave them to live outside! Besides what if they invited there whole family over.? wow what a mess that would be there are about 10,000,000 beavers in North America. do you have enough table legs for that many.? And You've heard of being Busy as a Beaver.!! Well they are very busy. and you're mom and dads house would be torn down in less than a week with just 5 beavers. why only a week? Well a group of Scientists in Wyoming took 10 beavers.. 5 male beavers.. and 5 female beavers.. All out to an area that no beavers had been at for a couple of decades. Those 10 beavers in one year had made 5 colonies and had built 55 dams. and all in one year!! so how much wood does you're house have. ? Not that much maybe enough for one dam.

Humans have invented many tools to cut wood,

like the axe and saw, and
including wedges, and splitters, and chain saws,
and tractors with kinfe clamps.
all just to make useful items
like this watering troft and pump, or the fence.

But the oldest woodcutting tools are not man made.
they are a good set of sharp teeth of which belong to the very eager and hungry beavers,
the original lumberjacks.

An adult beaver can reach about four feet in length and weight upwards of 60 pounds, Because its upper and lower incisors grow continuously, the beaver must frequently shapen them to wear them down. A layer of hard enamel covers the front surfaces of them, making the sharp beveled edge.

Since they are curved inward and have powerful jaws to push them the beaver can bite through some of the hardest wood very easy.

People living in a cold Climate appreciate the value of a warm, waterproof overcoat. Well the beaver never has to shop for his for he already has it. His fur ranges from the colors of tan to dark brown, and has two layers.

The dense undercoat is very fine and lined with tiny barbs that lock together to protect them from the water and the cold air. ( wow natural velcro ) and the outer layer is long hairs that are thick and shield the undercoat and help the beaver dry by making the water run off easier.

All beavers have two pairs of unusual glands at the base of the tail. One set makes a special oil, and the other makes castoreum, ( sounds bad, smells better) which is used by them for atracting other beavers and the oil is used to help with the waterproofing of their fur.
