His Given Name was "Marion Morrison"
on his birthday May 26, 1907 as the son of
Clyde and Mary Brown Morrison.Clyde was one of the drug store's druggist in town.
The Duke lived in Winterset for three years before
moving to Earlham where his father " Clyde "
had purchased the drug store in that town.In 1914 The family moved to California.
His famous Duke nick name came from
is childhood pet, an Airedale.(It was rumored to have been taken
from his white horse in the movies
which was called duke
as well as a dog that
appeared in the early films.)But it was John that named
those two after his dog.The birthplace was restored in 1982
and is filled with memorabilia such as
the eye patch from "True Grit",
the hat from "Rio Lobo" and much more to see.He was the only Actor to win the
Congressional Medal of Honor,
and never served in the Military. He was also one of the most
popular actors in our history with a career
that lasted 50 years 150 films and
30 bit parts in other films. In the last film he did called
"THE SHOOTIST" in 1976,
he was inflicted with cancer so bad. That the scene in the film where
his character is laying on the floor
behind the bar and shows
pain from a gun shot to the back. The pain that you see on johns face
was ! REAL ! that scene took so long
to do that the pain killer he had taken
was wearing off. Yes Reguardless of the
rumors. He DID take Pain Killer.!!The cancer was so bad that they
(about 4 big men) had to pick him up,
off the floor and wait until
his medicine would keep the pain away,
long enough to finish filming
on the movie that day. Some people say,
" That if he did not smoke cigarettes
he would not have gotton cancer. "But there is the fact that he did most
of his films in the southwestern
part of the U.S.That has caused a feeling among
his fans that the cancer
was brought on by the
nucler bomb testing which has caused
the entire area to be come radioactive.Which is now known to cause cancer
if exposed to it for a
prolonged time.Or a large amout of it for a short time.
Many other enternainers that
were in the films
that were made in the
southwestern united states
have died from cancer. And the government still
says there is no connections
to the bombs.?If you belive that I want to sell you
some land at the north pole
that has no snow ever. And i will let you have it cheap.
I will even throw in the
drainage pump for free.!!
