PFC Alan Babin a combat medic with HHC 1/325 82nd AIR was critically wounded on March 31, 2003 while attempting to render aid to a wounded soldier. Alan's unit had been dispatched to a position across the Euphrates river as a blocking action early in the morning of March 31st. Upon reaching their assigned position the unit came under heavy small arms fire which included rocket propelled grenades. As other units moved across the bridge over the Euphrates river, a soldier was wounded by small arms fire on the bridge. A cry for medic was made and PFC Babin with out hesitation left his covered position to render aid to the wounded soldier. As PFC Babin ran to the aid of the soldier he was wounded by small arms fire. The bullet entered his right side and exited his left side. Due to the intensity of the battle, PFC Babin could not be evacuated for 3 hours.
PFC Babin was evacuated to a field hospital to which he immediately went to surgery. Field physicians removed 90% of his stomach, his spleen, part of his pancreas and large intestine and sustained injuries to his liver. He eventually was transported to the USS Comfort a hospital ship off the coast of Kuwait and again underwent numerous surgeries to save his life and remain in ship's ICU for three weeks.
On April 24th PFC Babin was evacuated to Germany and again underwent surgery, he remained in Germany for two days and was transferred to Walter Reed Army Medical Center (WRAMC) in Washington D.C. on the 26th of April. Upon arriving at WRAMC, PFC Babin underwent numerous surgeries to repair the damage sustained from the bullet wound. On May 7th PFC Babin was awarded the Purple Heart for injuries sustained in combat. He contracted meningitis and suffered a small stroke on the 10th of May which was a major set back for his recovery. PFC Babin was awarded the Bronze Star with "V" device for valor on the 16th of July for his actions associated with his injuries. He remained in ICU at WRAMC until the 16th of November when he was transferred to Brook Army Medical Center (BAMC). PFC Babin remained at BAMC until Christmas eve, at which time he was transferred to a rehab hospital in south Austin.
PFC Babin has a long recovery period ahead of him and is undergoing rehabilitation at the Texas Neuro Center in south Austin. His mother has been by his side since arriving at Walter Reed Army Medical Center. He has undergone numerous surgeries with more on the horizon. His battalion commander and his command sergeant major recently paid a visit to PFC Babin and presented the Army Commendation Medal for his participation in Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Keep up with Alan's progress at http://www.caringbridge.org/tx/alansangels/

BACA Ride for a Reason
Baytown, TX
April is Child Abuse Prevention Month in Texas and across the nation. It is a time to renew our personal involvement in the community around us. It is a time to focus on ways not only to protect children from abusive environments, but also to prevent abuse from ever occurring. We can help protect the children in our neighborhoods, our communities and our state. During the month of April, the Texas Department of Protective and Regulatory Services, the state agency responsible for Child Protective Services, is launching a statewide media campaign called "It's Up To You" that asks each individual to take personal responsibility in keeping children safe. In conjunction with our State Agencies, Bikers Against Child Abuse (B.A.C.A.) Houston Chapter, is having their 2004 Annual Ride For A Reason Benefit. It's up to all of us to prevent a child from becoming another heartbreaking statistic. The ride starts at 10:00am at Rocky's Pelican Junction (located at 1307 S Hwy 146 Baytown, Texas). The poker run has the 1st bike out at 10:00am. $10.00 donation per hand. Roadhouse Benefit for Seth
San Antonio, TX
Benefit for 11 year old Seth on Saturday, June 26th. Seth's grandmom, dad, and uncle are regular customers of ours and we are hosting a benefit to aid with medical expenses for him. Seth, from Pearsall, was injured in a farming accident and lost three of his fingers. They were able to re-attach one, but he is on a donor list for the replacement of his other two fingers. Seth has already had two surgeries and they expect that he will require two to three more to get him back on track. There will also be additional medical expenses if and when he is able to get a donor or if prosthetics are required. And, as I'm sure all of you will suspect, the insurance just ain't enough to pay for all of the bills! There will be live music all day and night, hosted by Delta Ryde (other bands TBA) and bar-b-que plates for sale, with a portion of the proceeds to be donated to Seth. We will have auctions, raffles, and a 50/30/20 cash prize drawing. (For those of you who don't know what a 50/30/20 drawing is, it's really simple! We take all of the money collected from the tickets sold, give 50% to Seth and give away two cash prizes--30% and 20% of the total cash collected--to the 2 winning ticket-holders. You need not be present to win these prizes). We are gladly accepting any donations for auction or raffle items. These items can be dropped off at the club anytime. Please just note on your donation that it is for Seth's benefit (as we are hosting other benefits all throughout the summer) and, if you wish, your name or company name so we can add you to our Sponsor List. All proceeds from auction and raffle items will be donated to Seth. We will also have a "donation at the door charge" of $5 per adult, $8 per couple, $3 per child, and $10 per family--all of which will go to his medical expenses. (Each donation at the door will receive 1 raffle ticket per dollar of the donation, i.e., an individual would receive 5 tickets for his/her $5 donation and a family would receive 10 tickets for their $10 donation--YOU MUST BE PRESENT TO WIN RAFFLE ITEMS!). Want to make a donation directly? You may send your donations to the Seth Stidham Graham Benefit Account c/o Security State Bank, P.O. Box S, Pearsall, TX 78061. Anything at all you can do is greatly appreciated by Seth and his family! Let's all do what we can to help out this great kid and get him back on his feet! ... The Roadhouse Saloon is situated on the Northeast side of San Antonio on Farm Road 78 (about 1/8 mile south-west of the intersection of Foster Road & 78) with easy access to IH-35, IH-10, Loop 410, and Loop 1604.

On the 13th of March 2004 while on patrol in the city of Ramadi, Iraq, about 60 miles west of Baghdad, the fire team Mack led came under attack after killing an emeny terrorist who had a cell phone to his ear. (cell phones are used to remotely detonate IED's). Immediately following, and IED was detonated on the passenger side of teh HumVee the Fire Team was using for patrol. Mack and his S A W gunner, Zimmerman, laid down fire so the rest of teh team could exit the vehicle. After Mack and his gunner left the vehicle and fopund cover, a Navy Corpsman, Coc Cordaway, approached Mack informing him that he had been hit bad and had what Doc thought was a sucking chest wound. After killing the enemy, Mack and the Fire Team were evacuated by helicopter to the 31st Combat Support Hospital in Baghdad.
Mack suffered the following: virtually all of his jaw was blown off, a collapsed lung, a 4"x5" piece of his upper right arm was blown off, and shrapnel in his right tibia. Mack was transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center, then to Bethesda Naval Hospital, where his wife, mom, and dad joined him. Mack was then transferred to Wilford Hall Medical Center at Lackland AFB to begin his reconstructive surgeries. Mack has been through more than one such surgery, has his next scheduled for July, and faces many more.
Without immediate treatment from Doc, the Navy Corpsman, and teh medical centers, Mack would not have returned home alive. The McPherson Family thanks all that serve our Nation and all those charged with the medical care of our Servicemen and women. They also wish to thank all who pray for Mack and his Brothers.
Help us support this Bertram Hero on July 24th at the Bertram Ballpark.

Little River Bike Jam
Temple, TX
Temple Academy Raceway - 1st Annual Little River Bike Jam - Labor Day Weekend
Labor Day weekend (Sept 4-5th), we will be having the 1st Annual Little River Bike Jam. We just received notice that the promoter of the original Texas Party Drags was cancelling the event due to financial difficulties. We don't believe this is fair to the many people who have loved coming to Temple for the Labor Day weekend. However, with only 15 days to go, we have too much invested not to have the event in some form or fashion. We've got a very short amount of time to get some of the booked in teams, sponsorships, banners, flyers, etc. but I know that if we work hard we can make it happen. If there are any clubs or groups you may be able to get me in contact with I would greatly appreciate it. It's going to be a 2-day event for Saturday and Sunday, with overnight camping permitted. The program will consist of bracket style and heads-up racing for different classes of bikes, along with a bike show, vendors and a swap meet. I just want to put something on, because I know that there are a lot of people who are expecting it, and it really puts us in a jam to cancel on such short notice. Any help, advise, or information you can pass along would be greatly appreciated..... Stay tuned for details.
Sincerely, Greg Duffield - Temple Academy Dragway

Heaven to Hell Ride
Alpine, TX
The 1st annual Heaven to Hell Ride will take motorcyclists along 350 miles of Texas Big Bend Mountain trails, from the highlands of Alpine through the Chihuahuan Desert, paralleling the Rio Grande west to Presidio, to Marfa and the spectacular Davis Mountains, then back to Alpine and end in picturesque Marathon nestled next to the Glass Mountains. The Heaven To Hell Ride will be abundant with things that bring joy to a motorcyclist’s heart. First there’s the countryside.one can ride Texas’ highest road on the scenic loop in the Davis Mountains-72 miles of twisty, winding roadway that make motorcycling an exciting challenge. Or, just a few hours away, and several thousand feet lower, is the road voted most scenic in Texas by readers of Ride Texas Magazine -River Road- 67 miles more twisty road from Study Butt to Presidio traversing the Rio Grande. And then there are the ride between Marfa and Ft. Davis, the ride through Musquiz Canyon between Ft. Davis and Alpine and the ride from Alpine to Marathon between the Glass and Del Norte Mountains. The list goes on and on... The one-day ride is sponsored by the Alpine Chamber of Commerce. The Heaven to Hell Ride offers an introduction to the Big Bend for those who do not know its many-splendored routes, or a return to best-loved byways for motorcyclists who have passed this way before. The $40 registration fee includes breakfast, lunch and dinner (day of the ride only), a cap with logo, patch and pin and a wristband for local discounts. The ride will include stops for meals and visits in many places of the area (Terlingua, Marfa, Fort Davis, Marathon etc...). This event will be limited to the first 150 registrants.
