Riddle #1
.
A basilisk's fang has
just wounded a friend.
You have only moments
before his life's end.
Though one of the bottles
below holds the cure,
The others hold poisons
both fatal and sure.
But which of five beakers
contains life, not death?
You must decide quickly
before his last breath.
Inside the five are these
infusions four :
Evening Nightshade will
take him to death's door.
Poppy will put him to
sleep, but forever;
And soul from body Digitalis
will sever.
Only the Phoenix Tears
can save his life.
The choice of this one
substance will end his strife.
At end and at center,
Poppy brings death twice;
The Nightshade between
them costs no less a price.
Pure Digitalis lies
on the far side.
Its friend to the left
has the Phoenix Tears inside.
So which of the five
bottles to give to your friend?
Make the right choice,
or his funeral attend. |

I heal, too.
Yellow I appear, and
yet I burn blue.
A powder for guns, a

Inside a tree
I once ran free.
But time and pressure
Soon changed me.
A drop of "gold"
Or so I'm told,
The past in me
You see and hold.
I'm life entrapped,
A moment sapped.
Time holds still,
Inside me wrapped. |

I'm the river that sustains
you.
I'm the cell that still
contains you.
I'm the line that binds
your kin.
I'm the source that
lies within.
When I'm hot, the anger
rises.
When I'm cold, it paralyzes.
When I race, the throbbing
shakes you.
When I halt, the reaper
takes you. |
I can cure, and I can
kill.
I spread disease; I
stop the chill.
I pound. I run. I spill.
I gush.
I circulate. I freeze.
I rush.
I can make the pressure
soar.
I can thrill the carnivore.
I will go straight to
your head,
And never stop until
you're dead. |

All of which the

to buy me
And put me in
their homes.
The poor will
sit and admire me
When they feel
lost and alone.
