Black Beauy Ranch
The Fund for Animals operates the world famous Black Beauty Ranch in Murchison, Texas. The 1,620-acre refuge is home to many hundreds of animals -- from chimpanzees to burros to elephants. Here, animals do not get harassed or harmed, but a helping hand and a loving home.
Black Beauty Ranch is open to visitors most Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with the last tour leaving at approximately 2:45 p.m. The Ranch is closed for tours during the month of August due to the extreme Texas heat. During the month of December, please call and make a reservation to visit the animals so that we may have a tour guide available.Summer Saturday Hours
July 3: 9 a.m to 4 p.m.
July 10, July 17 and July 24: 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.
The Tour
The tour consists of three parts: an introduction, a walking tour and a bus tour. There is a golf cart available for those who have difficulty walking. The introduction begins in the Cleveland Amory Memorial Pavilion. As you walk around the front of the ranch, you will meet several burros, including Friendly and Granny, two of the original burros rescued from the Grand Canyon National Park in 1979, and several rescued Shetland ponies. The walking tour will take you down Black Beauty Lane where you will meet rescued iguanas and tortoises, chimpanzees, lemurs, macaques, baboons, gibbons, mountain lions, pot bellied pigs, a wallaroo, and Babe, the elephant. You will also visit with elands, camels, and other exotic antelope. Our little green bus takes visitors out to the vast pastureland where the buffalo, and horses, burros, and cattle, roam. On the way, you will see the deer pen and meet rescued deer, goats, rhea, emu, ostrich, capybara, a tapir, llamas, alpacas, and others.
Cost
Tours are free. Donations are gratefully accepted to assist in the care of the animals. There is a small gift shop with Cleveland Amory's books and Black Beauty Ranch merchandise such as T-shirts, travel mugs, and stuffed animals.
