This was meant for Texas residents, but some of it, especially the part about posting our Service member's names and addys should be read by everyone trying to support our troops. Also, some of the links are "national" and one can always contact their own local Red Cross for information on how/where to send things.
DEPARTMENT OF THE ARMY DIRECTOR OF INFORMATION MANAGMENT TEXAS ARMY NATIONAL GUARD P.O. BOX 5218, AUSTIN, TEXAS 78763 AGTX-PAO 3 April 2003 SUBJECT: Contacting and assisting Deployed Soldiers 1. Many people have asked how they can write to a deployed soldier. The only way they can do this is via e-mail. Send a greeting via e-mail through http://anyservicemember.org/ or http://www.OperationDearAbby.net . Unfortunately, there is no way for people to send cards or letters to a servicemenber if they do not have that person's name or address. 2. Some people want to collect items to send to our deployed soldiers. In many cases, they have already collected the items and want our assistance in shipping them to the Persian Gulf. Please let these people know that there is no system in place that will let them send items directly to our troops. They can contact the American Red Cross (Austin phone number: 512-928-4271) to find out what the Red Cross needs. They can then ship the items to the Red Cross, but will have to pay $2 per pound to ship the items overseas. 3. There are websites for organizations that claim to be able to send items to our deployed troops. However, these sites all request the name and address of the deployed soldier. If the person already has this information there is no reason to use an organization, they can ship it themselves. There are obvious security issues raised when we provide an organization with the names and addresses of our deployed forces. In fact, the Defense Department specifically requests that people NOT use these sites. "There are many well meaning Web sites, TV stations, and charity groups that are promoting donations to overseas Servicemembers. While well intentioned, you should not use them and you should discourage others from using them. These unsolicited letters of support or care packages to Servicemembers raise a force protection issue, since anonymous donors are different from legitimate family members and friends. DoD has cancelled mail programs which encouraged the American public in general to mail to Any Servicemember (versus a specific deployed person). These new programs attempt to do the same thing by gathering names of Servicemembers to send mail. While legitimate mail from family members and loved ones is always encouraged, these donor programs, which collect and pass out Servicemembers' names and addresses, is discouraged." 4. You are not permitted to release the names and addresses of soldiers. Some people have requested the names of soldiers so that they can pray for them. Others have requested the names so that they can write to them. In no case are you allowed to release the name and/or address of a soldier. 5. What can people do to help? The Army has provided several suggestions at the following site http://www.army.mil/operations/Iraq/FAQ.html. 6. If people are interested in helping the families of deployed Servicemembers, they can contact the Texas National Guard Family Support Program number at 1-800-252-8032. 7. Please contact this office if you have any additional questions. Bob Dashman Sergeant Major, Texas Army National Guard Director, Public Affairs AGTX-PAO P.O.
