Notes:
Beulah Idrew Corley Berry is my great-grandmother. Much of our
information came word of mouth from her, her siblings, and their
descendents and the Corley family bible. Most of my information
has been verified by census records and by cemetery records. The
1910 census lists [Larkin] Frank Corley as a wagon driver and
shows that the family did take on boarders; according to the
Sabine Parish Genweb site where I obtained the 1910 census
record, the Corley family was living on Maple Avenue, in Many, LA
in 1910. It also shows that Elizabeth Corley had 7 children, and
that 4 were dead. Most of the family is buried at Antioch Baptist
Church Cemetery. You may check the Sabine Parish Genweb site for
cemetery information. They are buried with many of their children
at Antioch Baptist Church Cemetery in Sabine Parish, LA. To get
to the cemetery-- leaving Florien on Hwy 474 west drive about 5
miles to Dess Road. Take a left onto Dess Road (to the south),
travel less than one mile and you will see the Church. Larkin
Frank, Elizabeth, Virginia (Jennie also Ferjenier), Alva, Effie,
Jessie Morris, and Sebren are all buried on the Eastern side of
the highway.
Jackie Gilbert Teems wrote, "Some will say it's Corley legend or folklore; I [Jackie Gilbert] have heard this story off and on all through my childhood and I was always intrigued with it. I heard Grandma [Beulah I. C.] Berry tell it many times and it was always the same. Little did I know then that what I had come to call the Corley Sparrow would greatly affect my life down the road.
"The story as told by Grandma Berry: An epidemic was spreading across the South. Alva Monerie Corley had already passed away from it [14 Jun 1906]. Soon after, the other three were hoeing in the field on the family homestead one afternoon when a pesky sparrow started circling their heads. Jenny, the oldest, had a foreboding vision that foretold her own destiny, she stated, 'I will be the next to die.' Within forty-eight hours, Jenny was gone also.
"I told this story to my children and had thought about
it through the years, but never did I dream it would ever come
back and touch me on a personal level. Two years this past
February, [2000] I lost my mother, Mildred Berry Gilbert,
daughter of Beulah Corley Berry who was one of the sisters who
stood in the field that fateful day all those years ago.
"On the last day of her life, off and on all afternoon as I
stood at the foot of my mother's bed, she kept raising her right
arm, pointing her finger and mumbling. I thought she was trying
to talk to me, but when I asked her, "Mom, what are you
pointing at?" She answered, "I'm following the
bird." There is no doubt in my mind that this is the same
bird. To my knowledge, I have never heard of the Corley Sparrow
coming to lead anyone home except for my mother and my Great
Aunt Jenny, perhaps no one ever made the connection before or recognized it as such. However, my Grandma Berry's last words were, "Let's go; let's go." Was she talking to the Corley Sparrow? No one can say; we'll leave it for you to decide. And so for now the Corley Sparrow has flown away"
I, Kendrick Harmon, tried to research to see what epidemic might have killed Jenny & Alva to no avail. I checked records for a few of the cemeteries including Antioch Baptist Cemetery where the two sisters are buried and found whole families who died in the summer of 1906. Tammy Larche, tammy@cp- tel.net, wrote, "I did remember a gentlemen who was born in 1925 talking about his dad, who was one of 6 children, he ended up losing several siblings in his family in 1906 of either Swamp Fever (malaria, typhoid, or yellow fever) or Black Fever (an acute infection with high temperature, which caused dark red skin lesions that had a high mortality rate). They lived between where Siloam and Beulah churches are currently."
Both are on the 1860 Sabine Parish, Louisiana Census with parents.
Both are on the 1870 Sabine Parish, Louisiana Census with parents.

24 Nov 1939 - Last rites for L. F. (Uncle Frank) Corley, age 81
years, were held at Antioch at 10 o'clock last Saturday, Rev. W.
G. Bailey officiating. Funeral directed by the Dennis-Green
funeral home of Many. Mr. Corley passed away at the family
residence Friday, suddenly. Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Bettie
Stroud Corley, age 80 years; four children, Mrs. Effie Bow, J.
Morris Corley, Seborn Corley and Mrs. J. D. Berry; 14
grandchildren and eight great grandchildren. Mr. and Mrs. Corley
would have celebrated their sixtieth year of married life in
January.
From a newspaper clipping, uncertain which paper, which date: Uncle Frank, as everyone called him, went to meet his Savior Nov. 17, 1939. He suddenly passed away in his home, which he and his wife planned and built when first they began, together, a life which proved to be long, happy, and useful. He was a good citizen, a loving husband, father, and grandfather. He was loved by all who knew him. If he should have lived until Jan. 1, 1940, he and his faithful companion would have celebrated their sixtieth wedding anniversary. He accepted Christ as his Savior when a young man. He remained faithful to the end. He was always in his place in God's house at church services. Work or worldly pleasures did not block the way. May his faith and trust in God be a guide and reminder to those who have not accepted Christ as Savior. What a blessing is in store for them if they will only open the door to their heart and let the Savior in. Grandmother, may you and all the family and friends find comfort and peace in knowing that our loss is Grandfather's gain. The angels were waiting to greet him and Jesus must have said, "Ye were faithful." Grandfather was nearing his 82nd year. He leaves a wife, four children, 14 grandchildren, and eight great grandchildren. May we all be prepared to say, "I am ready" when God calls. a grand-daughter

Notes: In October 1859, Jesse Powell Leach, Anthony Collin Leach, Moses Elisha Leach (brothers) requested letters of dismissal from Antioch Baptist Church in Bibb Co, AL, in order to head west. Also dismissed at this time were Zacchaeus Corley, II, Wiley Corley, and Pleasant Larkin Corley (sons of Zacchaeus Corley, Rev. war soldier from SC who settled and died in Bibb Co., AL.) Their initial destination was Texas.
The Corleys travelled with several other families including Wiley Wooley and several Leach families. (Wiley had married Mary Leach, Zacchaeus II married Nancy C. Leach-- not sisters.) They arrived at the Sabine River, and finding it impossible to cross, pitched camp to wait for the waters to go down. Some families planted quick growing crops and even corn to help replenish supplies. When the waters receeded, they did not go on, choosing instead to settle in Sabine Parish, LA.
Zaccheus Corley appears on the Bibb Co, AL census in 1850 as a farmer; on the 1860 Sabine Parish, LA census as a farmer, and on the 1870 Sabine Parish, LA census as a minister.
"Zacchaeus was a Baptist minister, and spent much of his time ministering to those about him. He likely never patented any land in Sabine Parish, for land was not at a premium in those days, but he and Nancy lived in two communities during their life there. Their last home being in the Mt. Carmel Community. This land on which they last settled is now [1960s] in the hands of one of their descendants, Luther Corley, who some years ago, converted the original log house into a barn on his property. . . Her [Nancy's] hardships were those common to the mother of eleven children and a pioneer wife of a preacher. . . After her death, 'Brother Zack,' as he was affectionately called, continued to preach. It is not uncommon to find his signature on marriage license of numerous relatives of that day. He also continued his abode in the Mt. Carmel Community, his children and grandchildren contributing to his needs." (Corleys, Corleys, Corleys by )
Zacheus and Nancy are buried at the Mt. Carmel Cemetery which is located across the street from the Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. The Mt. Carmel community is located about 6 miles east of Florien on Hwy 118.

"Ebenezer Baptist church was organized in September, 1882.
Rev. Edward Duggan served as the first moderator, assisted by
Rev. Zachariah Corley and Rev. Sorrell. Rev. Duggan said,
"We will put the responsibility of naming the church on
Brother Zachariah Corley." Brother Corley spoke up and said,
"Brethren, we will name her Ebenezer". The committee
consisted of Rev. Edward Duggan, Rev. Sorrell, Bro. T. J. Bush
(recording officer), and Rev. Zachariah Corley.
There were 26 charter members, however only 20 are listed." I have been unable to find any record of a Rev Zachariah Corley in or around Sabine Parish at this time; however, Zacheus was called "Brother Zach." I believe that the secretary who took notes at the meeting made the mistaken assumption that Zach was short for Zachariah, and that this is our Zacheus Corley.

Notes
I have found Zacchaeus spelled at least a dozen different ways; I
have no idea at how he really spelled it.
"The number of children that Zacchaeus had is quite controversial. At the beginning of this compiler's searching, a relative set the number at twelve, listing eight, two of whom he knew only as the wives of James and Allen Smelly.
"Court records show a listing of only five sons. No authentic proof can be reached, as yet , to show that the two daughters mentioned above, nor a son, whose name was Green B., were the children of Zacchaeus." The 1850 Census shows that Green B. Corley was born in 1800 and Rebecca (Corley?) Smelly, wife of James Smelly was born in 1793 ( Corley Liliane. Corleys
Corleys Corleys published 1963, found in Sabine Parish Library, Many, LA). Liliane Corley was apparently unaware that Zacchaeus Corley had been married two times before Elizabeth Burnett and expressed confusion over the ages of the Green B and Rebecca; however, it is possible that these are children by Sarah Samford. Green Corley married Mary Smelly on 12 Feb 1826 in Bibb Co, AL.
Several sources record that Zacchaeus Corley was a Revolutionary soldier who lived in South Carolina.
The following was copied from an internet page, documentation
following:

Information on the family of Robert Corley is sketchy at best. Most of the information I have comes from agreeing sources on the internet I have seen no primary source information (ie wills, deeds, tax records, marriage records etc). I am including this information knowing that it may contain errors in dates or that children ascribed to Robert and Sarah may be from other families. When moving to the Pre-Revolutionary War records, accuracy becomes a little more difficult. Federal Census records began in 1790; many county and state records were destroyed by the Union Army in the war between the states. Other researchers, on whom you must rely, may use less than professional research techniques and often make leaps of intuition that may or may not be correct

Taken from Holliday, Claudette. "One family's long
journey to our state. " Lexington County Chronicle.
September 14 2000.
"Several decades ago, Lee Gandee wrote about the Corley
family from interviews with Sue Corley Cope. According to Gandee
Mrs. Cope reported the Corleys emigrated from Bern, Switzerland,
to England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and eventually to South
Carolina. Sue Cope told of the existence of an ancient record
written in German script which recorded a 300-year history of the
Corley (Carle) family in Switzerland and an account of their
escape to America.
This document, Mrs. Cope claims, was burned in the civil war. There was also a Hans Michael Carle who served as a witness to the will of John Conrad Gallman on August 6 1771, of Saxe Gotha along the Congaree River, according to Gandee. Faust and Brumbaugh entries show that in 1790 a Hans Carle emigrated with his wife Cathrina Elizabeth Bussinger and five children Anna Barbara, Verena, Johannes, Hans Jacob, and Catherina from Rothenfluh, Canton Bern, to America. A Hans Michael Carle received a grant of 200 acres near St. Jacobs Church in Dutch Fork, probably Ninety Six District at the time. Ninety Six records indicate a John George Carle had land holdings in the Cloud's Creek area. It is my [Claudette Holliday's] belief John george Carle is the father of Lawrence Charles (later Corley). He had a brother Frederick, and possibly another brother Jacob.
To add further confusion to the mystery of the Carle/Charles/Corley family origins, I received a letter from Don Dunbar of Texas, who came to Lexington seeking information about his Corley ancestors. He also listed John George Carle as possibly the father of Lawrence Corley. His reocords show Lawrence and Christina Blakeny Corley lived in London, England, on Threadneedle Lane at some time Lawrence Charles served in the American Revolution under Gabriel Friday of Granby. He attended Zion Lutheran Church in Switzer's Neck. After the Revolution he changed his name from Charles to Corley. He had 16 children and two wives. All are accounted for up to the present, despite the fact that much of our written history has gone up in smoke several times in the past 200 years." ******
Taken from "The Will of Lawrence Corley (b. 1742 - d. 12/18/1825)" The Corley Chronicle Most of Lexington's Probate records were destroyed by fire in 1865 on Sherman's March to the Sea. The following is an abstract from the original will of Laurence Corley which is now in the hands of James L. Holman of Columbus, Georgia:

December 17, 1815

It is said that Laurence's first wife, Christina Blanken, is
the mother of the first family of Lexington and that her unmarked
grave (1806) was the first in Lexington. Laurence's grave is near
the site of their homestead and is maintained by the Daughters of
the American Revolution.
The Rev. and Mrs. Francklow are also buried in the Corley
cemetery along with a daughter Leah, and Laurence's son whom she
married. Rev. Francklow was living in St. Matthew's before coming
to Lexington and held the first Lutheran services in Lexington.
From these first meetings at the home of Laurence Corley, St.
Stephen's Lutheran Church had its beginning.
The log home in which Laurence and Christina lived has been relocated to the grounds of the Lexington County Museum and is part of its permanent exhibit.

One of Lexington County's treasures is the Lexington County
Museum; a re-creation of life in the County around the turn of
the 18th century. It presents the lifestyle of Lexington County
middle class farmers in the colonial and antebellum period and
contains many everyday items people used in the 18th and 19th
centuries. . . Granny Corley [this refers to Anne Barbara Derrick
Drafts Corley] and her family are regarded as the founders of
Lexington County. Her house, a national style "I" house
built in the late 18th century with exterior chimneys, is a good
example of vernacular architecture, which means the kind of house
that ordinary people built for themselves without asking an
architect or designer for advice. An 'I' house is usually one
room deep and two rooms wide, with a center hall, and chimneys at
each end."

lived and who is was can be glimpsed in the things he left
behind. One of these is the Corley log cabin on the grounds of

unknown, but there is a local saying, 'you can't throw a rock in
Lexington without hitting three Corleys.' Laurence Corley, his
neighbors, and their Captain, Gabriel Friday, fought the British
and their Tory allies in Lexington during the American
Revolution.
Zion Church was founded between 1740 and 1750 in the Switzers'
Neck near the Saluda River at Twelve Mile Creek. Godfrey Dreher,
one of Zion's first ministers, and John Dreher provided the land
for the church which was officially incorporated in 1788. Prior
to that time "Dutch" churches were not incorporated for
fear of having land and funds confiscated by the British Crown.
Prior to 1788 Zion was part of the Saluda Pastorate with St.
Peter's and Bethel High Hill.
It was at Zion that German Lutheran and Reformed churches
gathered to form the Corpus Evangelicum in 1787, the year of the
US Constitution. Zion's parishioners spoke both English and
German, and held the belief that English was the language of the
devil and German the language of God, therefore, preferred to
hear their sermons in German. Laurence Corley was a member of
Zion Church, and in 1922 his descendants provided land for a new
church when it was moved to its current location further up
Corley Mill Road.
The Corley Log Cabin is probably the oldest standing structure in
Lexington County. It has been carbon dated to 1771. The log cabin
has been moved twice. The first time from its location on the
Twelve Mile Creek to a site near Heritage Hills, and a second
time in 1975 to its current location at the museum."

Taken from "CORLEY or KARLE
THE ALLAN DAVID CHARLES FAMILY
The origin of the Charles family has not been throughly
researched, but the family in Up Country South Carolina appears
to have descended from a German ancestor named Karls, Car!, or
Carlee.
This ancestor apparently emigrated from Baden-Wurttemberg,
Germany, around the 1730's or 40's and settled either in the
Saxe-Gotha or Dutch Fork areas of South Carolina - modern
Lexington and lower Newberry counties. The family name was
anglicized to Charles and to Corley, with the first Charles who
left much of a mark on the historical record being Michael
Charles, Sr., of Newberry County. Michael was a revolutionary war
veteran, having served as a footsoldier in Company B (Houseal's
Company) of Waters Regiment of South Carolina militia for a
period of at least 127 days in 1780-82. It is assumed that
Michael Charles, Jr., was Michael Senior's son, as the junior was
granted land by the senior in 1834. When Michael Junior died in
1837, he and his wife Christiana Koon were in possession of an
apparently prosperous farm in the Dutch Fork. Michael Charles,
Jr., had three sons, Anderson W. (12-13-1828 - 11-15-1903), David
N. (2-3-1833 - 12-22-1908), and Franklin E. Charles, and two
daughters, Harriet and Elizabeth.

AMERICAN SOCIETY OF GENEALOGISTS
August 29, 1995 [research in 1980- Lawrence Corley of Lexington
Co SC] The heirs of Lawrence Corley is clearly documented through
valid court records cited in the paper. Some of his heirs are in
Coweta County GA 1850 census. Lawrence Corley's direct heirs are
listed on the paper enclosed. I devoted a lot of time to his
research because of information given me that mixed him together
with the Edgefield Co. Corleys. Documentation often eliminates
and/or sorts families into the proper structure. The Lawrence
Corley family is an alias surname well defined with documentation
and they are of German descent; I believe the Corley line I
descend through is of English origin although ever old timer
Corley descendant says Scot Irish because they were so
integrated.

I am writing this Document to clarify what has been written
unproven about LAWRENCE CORLEY of Lexington Co SC against what
has legally been documented end in on deposit at the South
Carolina Department of Archives and History in Columbia, SC. I
understand how very hard it seems to a researcher, especially in
other States to obtain documentation from counties who have had
many records destroyed. Therefore, please accept the following
information as unadulterated facts from four Equity Cases. If you
doubt my abstracts copies. May be obtained from the SC Archives
with the References I will give. Only the content of the four
Equity Cases has been used to write the following family data:
Barbara Corley petitioned for guardianship of minor children in
Lexington Co SC Court of Equity #24 Filed 1820. The document dose
not state who the father of these children is. The defendants
were to appear at a Court of Equity to be held at Richland County
Court House SC on June 15th next.
From the Richland County Court House SC Court of Equity #14 it
does state that Barber Corley is the late widow of Lawrence
Corley and list eight of his children under the age of 21 years,
giving the ages of six of these children. The document state
further "Report No 1/1820 18 July 1820 Determine whether
land should be divided, 1 parcel consist of 1 3/4th acre and the
other 107 acres, valued at 25 cents per acre. Must be divided
between 16 persons." Submitted by Thomas L. Williamson.
Another document in the same Equity package states "Ent.d June 1823 #7 sold land to Jesse Arthur, but he did not comply with the terms, therefore to be resold at next second Monday in Lexington SC"
Although Barbara Corley petitioned for guardianship of the minor children of Lawrence Corley, the guardianship was appointed to William Taylor husband of Rebecca Corley, daughter of Lawrence Corley, at the Richland County SC Court of Equity.
Lawrence Corley married Anna, the widow of John Drafts of Lexington Co SC. She called herself Barbara after her marriage to Lawrence Corley. Lawrence Corley died after 12 May l818 and before 29 May 1820 in Lexington Co SC. He had the following children John Corley; Barbara Corley who married a Thomas Rall; Elizabeth Corley who married a Samuel Wingard; Catherine Corley who married first a Michael Drafts who died in 1815 and she married second, Andrew Tarrar by 1818; Jacob Corley; Daniel Corley Emanuel Corley; Ephrium Corley; Nancy Corley; Rebecca Corley who married a William Taylor; Sally Corley born 1802; Elijah Corley born 1804; William Corley born 1806, Thomas Corley born 1808; Jermina Corley born 1810 and Mary Ann Corley born 1812.

The MEMOIRS OF GEORGIA were published in 1895 in two Volumes. William Taylor and two of his sons have their memoirs in "them. However, taking into account the many years gone by tradition and fact should be given their allowance. The death of Rebecca Corley Taylor in 1863 in Coweta Co. GA seems creditable along with the marriage year of 1819 to William Taylor. References: Memoirs of Georgia: Vol I, page 556, Dr. J P Taylor & William Taylor Vol II, page 522, Dr. J. W. Taylor

Notes
Siblings married siblings: William Gassaway, Jesse F., and
Emmaline Leach married Hannah, Elizabeth, and Archie Skinner.
During the War Between the States, William, Jesse, and Archie
made a pact: if any of the tree survived, he would care for the
families of the ones who did not. Archie Skinner died of measles
in Mississippi; Jesse Francis Leach died either at Shiloh,
Chicamauga, or Vicksburg. William Gassaway had two extra families
to support. Times in Alabama were bad. William's sister Nancy had
moved to Sabine Parish, Louisiana, and her husband Zachaeus
Corley wrote for them to "Come on." William Gassaway
Leach successfully bossed seven wagons from Alabama to Louisiana.
According to family legend , partly told by William's half-niece
Martha Cordelia Skinner Duggan, the trip was a terrible one,
headed by a man who would not let her take her doll. She recalls
they had to walk the whole way, and he would not let them ride.
They stopped every Sunday except the last one; they were getting
so close they just kept going. They had traveled so long they
were just "wore out." This was about 1872 when
conditions were very bad after the War Between the States. Some
said the William made his sister, Susan Emaline Leach, marry the
teamster Billie Jett, as it was "indecent" for a single
woman to travel in the company of a man. Descendants could not
say whether or not Emmaline was in love, but every one was
certain that there was no love lost between the children and
their step-father. The source concluded that it either William G.
was either stern and taking care of his charges in the most
strict sense or possibly "unfeelingly churlish, honoring an
obligation in the worst possible way."
Elizabeth Skinner Leach is buried at Prospect United Methodist Church Cemetery, Florien, Sabine Parish, LA.
Archie Marshall Skinner's tombstone says, "Archey M. Skinner, Co K 28 Ala Inf." He is buried at the Confederate Cemetery, Okokana, Chickasaw Co, MS.
William Worthy "Billy" Jett is buried at Prewits Chapel Cemetery, Hornbeck, Vernon Parish, LA.
On 13 Jul 1858, Massey Leach married William Radford, a widower. Massey was born in South Carolina in 1813. In the 1860 census, William was listed with Massey who was 33 years his junior. The census has him listed as a farmer with a real estate value of 6,200. His personal holdings were more than 2,000. Massey's daughter, Lucinda Leach, was listed as an 18 year old house keeper. Living next door was his son George and his wife Martha. George was listed as an overseer, evidently running the large farm that his father owned. It appears that the family of Massey was not happy about this marriage to William. W. G. Leach from Bibb Co brought a case against William and had him declared a lunatic. Duke Nall, who later as an officer in the 8th Alabama died in the Civil War, was appointed William's guardian. When he resigned, John C. Oakes, his son-in-law, became guardian and managed his affairs until after Williams' death on 23 Oct 1862. William left a will that divided his estate among many children and grandchildren.
